"build a culture of accountability".....nice cliche but get in the real world folks. thats what the program is built around but lets be honest. you have over 100 guys between 18-22 who mostly come from little home life or none. they don't show up fixed!!! the hospital is not for the sick... these aren't our typical liberty bubble kids and by most accounts i'd say we are pretty fortunate to have a program as clean as we do. and no i cant use caps don't know why?

Living in Lynchburg, I'd have to say Lynchburg has made that step up - not LU. Drugs in the Lynchburg area are terrible, these guys are pushing them in every college and highschool around, especially highshools. We read about or hear about kids/athletes and drugs constantly now.
But, I don't understand this, I thought all athletes at LU are constantly tested? I don't understand what he was thinking...
I think we need to support Asa, we don't know the facts (maybe he was playing in pain, maybe he is addicted) you just don't know.
And, then you support him more, because he will need it.
Asa - one mistake, is not a lifetime, unless you let it be.

If one or two players knew, they could have approached Asa. But I would not expect them to go to the coaching staff. They do not want to be known as the dude that potentially wrecked the season for getting Asa Suspended. (it would have been his entire senior season)

And what would be the motivation of a few players to rat out a guy and get him suspended for his senior year? If he were a junior and still had time to come back and make it right, It might be a little easier.

Dont put this on other players on the team. That is throwing too many people under the bus for one dude's bad choices. And I agree with SJ. Asa did what Asa wanted.

I put first at Asa's feet. BUT there were people on the team that knew what was going on, believe it. This is not something they have to take to the coaches but handle themselves, but they didn't that is on the team. The deeper question is why didn't they? Are there more players doing the same thing? Does the program not build a culture of accountability ? I don't know the answers to those questions and can only speculate. I just hope Asa can finally learn and be a better person for the experience.

Haize I really think your missing it on this one. It would not have mattered what players said to Asa, had they known.

Not to rub salt in the wound, but I talked to my sister yesterday and she told me she sits next to Asa and one of her psych classes. I asked her which class and it's "SUBSTANCE ABUSE"... I can't even make this stuff up.

I ask again, why did the team not step in and force him to quit the drugs? Their indifference just cost them one of their best players. Why did no one, or 20 guys, confront him, tie the big man down, and simply force him, even if by physical altercation, to stop? Is not the alternative that we see now much worse?

If I am doing something stupid, rather my brothers knock some sense into me (literally if need be) than me wind up with felony charges. Pain from a fist fight is temporary, a felony is not.

Of course this type of old school living is foreign to many on here, but what does proverbs say about sparing your son the rod? There is a reason why there is little crime in Singapore.

What tangible evidence is there that anyone on the team even knew about this going on? It is not probable that no one on the team knew, but it is possible. I don't see or hear of a pattern of a majority of LU football players being busted for drugs, school rules violations, trouble w/ academic eligibility, etc...so to suggest that a "culture of accountability," doesn't exist in LU football because of ONE case is extreme.

At LU, all you need is a little common sense and you can have whatever life you want. In the end, Asa is the sole person responsible for himself and the choices he makes, and I hope the consequences he is facing will enable him to make some changes for the better.

I did a Google search and from the old articles I found (going back to 2005 and UVA) coach Rocco has spent a lot of years trying to help Asa reach his potential, to be a success story, to make it to the NFL when others gave up on him. I feel for the coach, you know he's hurting .... I hope the other players reward him with a super effort Saturday! GO FLAMES!

I love how a ton of you dream up some conspiracy that somehow the team knew what Asa's actions were. Believe it or not, some people have personal vices that they can hide from others.

Its just irresponsible to throw those things around. Even more irresponsible to defame our program, but also the individual players on our team.

I'm not saying there aren't bad apples. But if there's one bad apple in Spain, it doesn't mean that every apple from Spain is bad.

Speaking of which, Liberty coach Danny Rocco offered this statement on Chapman today and declined to take any questions on Chapman's status. He remains under indefinite suspension. His court date is next Monday, and I didn't expect anything to have changed with the situation anyway.

"Last week I suspended nose tackle Asa Chapman for conduct detrimental to the team and conduct unbecoming of an LU student-athlete. We immediately put a support system in place which has offerend legal counsel, mentorship, education, community service, academic support as well as personal counseling. Asa is a first-time offender, and we will re-evaluate his circumstance as information continues to become available."

All I can say is wow. Like I said in my post the day after this all happened....his comments in the presser made me think the door was being left open...guess now it's a little more so.

Even though our defense would be borderline legendary with him, I just don't see how it could happen if his name is not completely cleared. He would show that he's above the rules which is bad for both him and the rest of the potential trouble makers on the team. I think it would just be a disaster on all ends. Except for maybe the end on the field, but who knows it could adversely affect that as well.
