I am thinking that this decision will pay off in the future games because of the injury to Garner. But I was starting to get concerned that we burned a Red Shirt for 9 catches and 0 TDs so far.
IMHO there is a very good chance Gabe will be redshirted next year, in which case nothing has been "burned"

Ervin told me on FaceBook about an hour ago "Torn MCL and ACL. Surgery in a few weeks." Surgery will be here in town. (I asked)

FYI!!

What will be the difference?

Play him this year when WR isn't as deep (Eden being out, Pratt not developing how they'd like him to, and BJ getting hurt now and then, and now Ervin being out).

Redshirt him next year (hopefully WR is deeper, look to bring in a recruit or transfer or just better prepare at the position, Gabe still wouldn't be playing QB, so let him sit and learn from Mike and hold the clipboard and get ready for the next season.)

As opposed to just doing it opposite.

Plus, it gives him a year to play scout team QB and get used to how it feels. If he redshirted this year, he'd have a year between his redshirt year and his year playing QB.

I hope we are deeper at WR next year, and Jimmy possibly returning will help. So Gabe can redshirt.

And by Gabe being quarter back in 2 years, you mean as a back up to Tyler , or no?

Depends. Impossible to say how good he'll be. Tyler would play if Gabe isn't good enough, but I think the plan is that Tyler will be to Gabe what he is to Mike if Gabe is as good as we think Gabe is.

He confirmed this on his Twitter feed as well.

Maybe ASA!?!?! :cheerleader

I would imagine Kyle DeArmon and Gabe Henderson will share extra reps.

Don't forget Tracy Curry. Hopefully he will be eligible. We only have 1 sr on the roster (DeArmon) so we don't really lose anyone on the depth chart.

Summers
Hayes
Kelly
Garner
Eden
Pratt
Curry

We should have plenty of depth at WR if Garner and Eden are able to come back. Even without them we should be deeper than this year.

Tyler will be a 5th year QB with 2 years of playing 10-15%+ of 1st team reps. He’ll have tons of experience. Gabe, on the other hand, will have 0 game experience at QB. I’m sure it will be Tyler as QB with Gabe playing a lot like Mike did last year.

2012 QB will resemble 2009 QB just substitute Beecher with Brennan and Brown with Gabe.

Why? Gabe and Mike can line up at WR with Brennan at QB. That could produce some scary looking trick plays with 3 QBs on the field. No need to put Gabe at QB in that situation.

Thinking element of surprise.

I hope you are right. Tyler deserves at least one year as "the guy". Gabe will be good I'm sure, but IMO Tyler has Stud potential.

I'll say it before SJ does, since he called me on this a while back, and he was right. We have not had a history of using "trick" plays. Even with Mike at WR last year, I don't know if he threw a single pass when he wasn't at QB, either under center of in the shotgun. I'm not saying whether that's good or bad (although as a fan I think it would be fun to see now and then). It is what it is, and I don't see it changing much.

We’ve ran a couple this year. We had at least one against VMI the other day. It was the play that ended up with Brennan getting a long reception for like 30 yards.

And Mike did throw on at least one end around last year. I forget who it was against now.
