There are just so many unkowns at this point it is hard to determine. Once the P5 make their decisions the dominos will begin to fall and that question will be much easier to answer.

I would say since it’s highly doubtful every bowl game will be played this year, and the ones most likely canceled would be the ones we’d have a shot at going to, our road to a bowl game is harder.

Also - we had possibly the weakest schedule in FBS football going into this season. If our schedule changes, it’s likely to get harder. That makes the road to a bowl game harder.

iF - UNM cancels season AND ACC goes to conference only ( and or plus 1 ) BUT SEC goes for normal schedule - MISS ST - first game is scheduled with UNM. I would love to see LU slide in for that slot. Freeze vs the Pirate who will go through 3 QB’s in the first half and all the Mississippi press and national press with story lines galore....get on it Ian !!!

Question for the football gurus: with everything in turmoil, will our road to a bowl game be easier, more difficult or stay the same.
A lot depends on how many bowl games are actually played. Hard to imagine that some will not be cancelled. Theoretically, just the fact that we could count 2 FCS wins would make it easier to qualify.

Jonathan Carone wrote: July 24th, 2020, 12:01 pm Latest rumor is the ACC is going conference + 1. Likely the +1 is to preserve the SEC rivalry games (Clemson/SC, GT/UGA, Florida/Florida State, Louisville/Kentucky) and other high profile games (UNC/Auburn, NCSU/Miss State).
After looking at the Syracuse & NC State schedules. I would think we have a good chance of keeping them on the schedule if those slots are not needed for ND. Edit: Their rivalry games are against other ACC teams.

I think NC A&T wants to play an indy schedule. Pick up some games Hampton dropped. I think they're looking for a Lynchburg game.

Yes. They are planning to rebuild an independent schedule this season. Pick up some games other FCS teams canceled. They're waiting see if we can put our season together. Looks like BYU is putting together some good stuff. May open against Alabama. Trying replace most of their lost p5's with new p5's.

Non-conference games have to be in Virginia, so still a chance VT could play Liberty, but would have to be later in the season, can't be opening weekend now.

Unless UVA and VT both want JMU as their non-conference game, I see VT keeping us and UVA keeping ODU on their schedules.

Does this mean Old Dominion game vs. Wake Forest is canceled on week one? I wonder if we could play Old Dominion week 1 and move Va. Tech to later in the year if possible

Hypothetically, we could play ODU week 1 at home as they were going to travel to Wake Forest and then play at Tech in week 2 as they were scheduled to have Penn State travel to Blacksburg. It is basically flipping the location of our games from away and then home to start the season to home and then away.

Also, I could see us playing both Tech and Syracuse this season because both of them lost a Big 10 opponent and we are a better team for both of them to play compared to the other two on their schedules.

Does the visiting non con team haVe to be from in state or just the game? If the former - Syracuse game is out.

My understanding is they can only travel in state. Opponent can come from anywhere.

I could definitely see Virginia Tech keeping the LU game as their OOC game. Makes sense from a geographic standpoint and a football standpoint. Having to play a gruesome full conference schedule means that they don't get any "easy" weeks. I could see them selfishly wishing to keep us on their schedule (although I don't expect us to be an "easy" opponent) :D

Unless WVU travels to UVA later in the year. Doubtful but possible.
WVU UVA was the back up game if they were going to do the Conference +1 but without the In State restriction.

Wouldn’t hate playing okie state Thursday night 9/3 on prime time just for exposure. I have a sneaky feeling we may take a road trip to TCU based on both of our canceled games on same week. Big 12 needs their non cons and we can pick up a couple if we want.
