Something along thos lines. I know it doesn't match up with our overall marketing strategy, but it would be cool with me. Otherwise, I like a plain metallic-colored helmet.

It would line up nicely if they put the new proto logo on the sleeves like the Philly Eagles have their logo--the one they put on merchandise. Could work, and would give LU a distinctive look to the helmets...Almost an American Chopper meets LU football art design air brush.

Actually, I always thought LU should commission them to do a bike and get some bootleg media attention. If you look on their site, American Choppers site, they do have a bike they did called the Liberty Bike which I believe they did for 4th of July or something like that, but they actually have the verse that LU uses, "Where the Spirit...." on the tale of the bike; it's almost could be an LU bike. Given the admin. affinity for choppers, always was surprised they didn't try that.

That is a great idea but the Motorcycle Posse is no longer with the school. Lovett is in TN, Borek is....who cares, so that just leaves Mark Hines!!! Would love to see him tool around campus in that thing!

Get Milwaukee Iron to do it. They don't really do theme bikes I don't think but they're a couple miles away and already have their own TV show. I don't know if they still have it actually but close enough.

The whole problem is I don't think proto has enough control. I'm sure they have control over a lot of important marketing aspects of our school but somethings, like all of our merchindise, the bookstore is in charge of. And they don't seem to have a problem ordering everything under the sun with 100 different logos in every color imaginable. I think we need someone or some organization in charge of everything in relation to this so that there's 1 clear direction we're taking.

Isn't the nickname "Flames" supposed to be a pack of Eagles?

I think you hit it right on. Everytime I inquire at the bookstore, I'm told they must please everyone and so order anything and everything. I bought a nice looking cap from Universal T's and a bookstore employee said she liked it. I told her that the bookstore needed to carry items like this cap and then she turned cold and said that they couldn't carry everything with the athletic logo. Maybe not, but my $ go into buying items with it, so Universal T's see more of my $. Maybe they should put both Proto and Universal T's in charge and see a coherent marketing strategy and an increase in merchandise sales.

I'm not opposed to placing a cool looking flame design on the helmets and then the Proto logo on the sleeves.

Two things:

1. It appears that there are too many cooks in the kitchen so to speak with being all things to all people for merchandise...they should choose their line and work the main logo, a secondary logo, and have their throwback classic logo (just like the NFL model has adopted, and seems to work well revenue wise and branding wise for them.)

2. The helmets would look great with Flames flying back over the helmet, sometimes a group has to establish a tradition...When you see the Michigan Helmets even though their logo isn't on them, you know exactly what team it is. With the proto logo on the arm of the jerseys you would get the profile TV shot of the quarterback shouting the calls, and would see the helmets with the bold flames, maybe Liberty Red with silver outlining the flames on a metallic Liberty blue helmet. Could be a look.

That Flicker pick gets me going too Sly. That thing is the funniest looking mascot ever. I can't stop laughing. Thanks for bringing it back to this board LUConn! Secondly, there appears to be a lot of mascots with the name Sparky in it! It seems I got torched by Proto and others when I suggested that for our mascot on the old boards    . Ok, I accept you guys' apology.

This is a common statement from students. Everything from a pack of eagles (I don't think such a thing exists) to "oh, it's a type of eagle". But it just isn't true. Flames is literally fire and comes from our motto "knowledge aflame". Both Flames and the eagle were chosen by students long ago. I believe the eagle was chosen as the mascot because it represents liberty. The word liberty.

On a side note, my wife went to Emmanuel Christian School up in Manassas, VA. The very same that Peter Aluma was teaching at. I call it Liberty Jr. because it seems like they've modeled themselves after LU in every way possible. Right down to the nickname "flames". She said that their mascot is so incredably lame and it's not an eagle. She describes it as "a giant orange hershey kiss". So I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it'd be difficult to make a flame mascot that didn't look stupid.

Some of the old hags on here might remember when we had a student vote on whether to ditch the Flames in favor of Eagles. The admininstration wanting the Eagles since it would be much easier to market and they figured the student body would go along. It was a landslide to keep the Flames.

I really think we can create a cool mystique associated with fire but it will require some effort.

Just shooting spit balls here, but I, in the deep evil recesses of my mind, have always thought that a Fireman would have been a good mascot. Sure it begs the question, if we are on fire why do we want a fireman to put us out. But it seems to me that whenever you see a person in a fireman's jacket, hat with a hose and ax, you think FIRE and where there is FIRE there are FLAMES.

Ok just a thought

I was just thinking a few hours ago that Firefighters might make a cool name for SJ's student group.

I like the firefighter mascot idea. I think it would fit nicely with the whole idea of flames. Maybe bring in a few firefighting trucks to make a lot of noise when a touchdown is scored, or to just be on hand, if some of the other ideas regarding shooting flames and such go astray. As I think by now, we recognize that a flame mascot is hard to not look dumb.

Could have a bunch of firetrucks and firemen who come out after a touchdown and pretending to put out a blazing inferno that they just can't get under control.

Could use smoky the bear.

This is exactly what our school needs to improve it's image. A big strong sweaty muscular man in his fire suspenders cheering on the flames. How could the kids from Radfurd make fun of that? It's bullet proof.

If you like, I'll send you a shot of me in my turn-out gear hard at work on a house fire.

No doubt you'll be suitably impressed, enough to create the mascot in my image.

Yeah, that's what we need to see on CBS evening news.

"Evangalist Rev. Jerry Falwell does about face on homosexuality and changes Liberty University's mascot to 'Big Sweaty Muscular Men' -- and joins up with equal-rights group SoulForce to promote equality.."

I haven't posted anything about it. There wasn't too awful much that came from it today. He had a meeting about the spring game before me that went a little late and had a meeting right after mine.

Bob Goode and another student (I can't remember his name cause I'm dumb) were also at the meeting. We're going to have a "focus group" type thing in two weeks with some eople around campus. After the main meeting I went over some ideas I had with Bob Goode and they seemed to go over well. The atmosphere should be great at games.
