I completely understand Coastal's beef. Even with Presbyterian's inclusion, the Big South won't be eligible for an auto-bid until 2015. This does not help the football situation one bit. If Coastal's going to leave, Coastal's going to leave. Nothing the Big South can do about it.

SMOOTHIE made a good point. I'm really not trying to insult those guys, but 2 decent years for a young FB program does not make you world beaters. I'd really like to see the reaction if LU comes out strong and beats them, or if CCU finishes at with only 7 or 8 wins. Maybe a little hasty here.

I will admit, with all our talk of going D1- we aren't much better! But I think Presby will be competetive and surpise some people.

Smooth's point is taken, no doubt. But Presbyterian to the Big South does absolutely nothing to absolve the football conundrum. Which is why PC's inclusion in the league has been met with yawns in Lynchburg and Conway. I don't think Liberty or Coastal expects to still be in this conference in 2015.

That may well be the case. I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to this season getting underway. We need to rock this conf this year! that will put a lot of this bravado to rest. Nothing like underachieving for a season to quiet the masses.

Re: Presbyterian makes the move to Division I / Big South
Big South Press Release

They don't play a Big South schedule until 08-09 and aren't eligible for Big South or NCAA championships until 2011. Hopefully we're gone before they even get in.

You didn't hit the nail - maybe your thumb :/ No one is really ticked off or livid. Jacket wants to go to the SoCon - it is no secret. It is also a common feeling among many SoCon fans that CCU will get a SoCon invite soon.

Many Coastal fans are only expecting 7-8 wins this year. Look at their schedule.

PC to the Big South doesn't make me livid, I'm just hoping we're in the Southern Conference by then.

Now, if it were Longwood or SSU being admitted, then I might be livid.

Coastal fans are far from arrogant about the football program. Seems like Liberty fans are a little ticked because of Coastal's success.

Longwood is a distinct possibility, I'm afraid. But seeings as we dropped 2 to them today in softball, and lost in MBB, we don't have much to sneer about right now!

I understand your point, JACKET- though I think that the SoCon isn't really a long term goal for anyone, just a stopping point. Thanks for dropping by, you and the guys are always welcome.

I wouldn't use that terminology at ALL in this case. 2 winning seasons in a row- esp with the flashes of domination CCU showed at times last year- made everyone sit up and notice. That was impressive, and good for the conference, so no- no one is "ticked"

My point is- thats hard to do, year after year. I think the level of competetion in the BSOUTH has been raised already (see CSU, last game of the season last year) and it will be difficult to maintain that domination with a target on your teams' back (ask Winthrop MBB).

We all respect Coach Bennett's work over there.

ahem - 3 winning seasons in a row

anyway - Charleston Southern didn't exactly sneak up on anyone, many folks in Conway realized that they were a good team. We screwed up in the final seconds. Not playing to win hurt us all year, but really hurt us that game. I expected the Big South, especially Liberty, to be much better last year than it was. Maybe this year ...

I think today's events go a long way at showing that Longwood is far from a distinct possibility. Longwood has been saying over and over again that they want to be in the league, yet they aren't...yet PC is invited into the league the minute they step into Div. I....If Longwood was going to be in the league, I would think that it would have been done by now...

though it may still happen later, who knows...

I think Kallander would be run out of dodge if we added a non-football school before adding a football school.

Come on, CCU guys. You guys are all welcome to come over here and register and post often. We love your perspective.

I think if we connect with any other Big South school it would have to be Coastal. We would love to maintain a positive relationship with CCU into future no matter which leagues we may be in down the road.

Do we want to see CCU leave the Big South? Of course not. Is it going to happen? If not this next year it likely will in the next couple of years unless there are fundamental changes in the Big South.

I agree with the earlier assertions that Longwood will never be in the Big South as long as LU & CCU have influence.

I think there needs to be a complete overhaul, D1-D3. All of these D2 schools are becoming D1 and diluting the pool in a lot of cases. A lot of D1 schools should be D2.

It'll all start with an overhaul of I-A and I-AA and then trickle down.

Let them play where they want to play. When Liberty goes I-A you don't think you'll hear the same thing - I-A is getting diluted, we need to separate ourselves from schools like Liberty ... etc

I'm not so sure that I want to see Coastal leave the Big South either. But we have to do something to help make our teams more legitimate to the public. Moving to the SoCon is a tough call because the competition will be greater - but it is well established and highly respected.

I haven't heard much talk about looking to I-A in Conway, but I would like to see us m,aintain a relationship no matter what as well. I do think that a SoCon move may shed some light on how quickly we think we can move up. Also being affiliated with App State and georgia Southern can't hurt since these teams will likely make the move in the next 10 years. I could see Coastal possibly sneaking in to a new I-A conference comprised of former I-AA schools.

i understand about the league not getting any better at the present time. only adding an existing I-AA member would give the league a real chance at gaining a bid to the playoffs. i respect coach bennett and what he as done, all im saying is the program is still in it's infancy stages and other than last year, the schedule was weak. why not stay a year or two in the big south and see if we can lure hampton or sc state?

Should I be moving this thread to The Chapel? :D

Seriously this has been one of the worst kept secrets in Big South circles for well over a year. I'm glad its over and done with.

I wish the Big South would get Hampton and SC State to come over...that would give us 8 football once Presbyterian is eligible and 12 basketball...plus those 8 give us a pretty decent 1-aa football conference, I think that'd get us an auto bid, especially if the MEAC and SWAC forfeit theirs...

Football

Coastal
LU
SC State
Hampton
VMI
Gardner-Webb
Charleston Southern
Presbyterian

The question is...if we did pull off the MEAC switch and add SC State...what does COASTAL think of its options?

I think that in that scenario, they'd be better off staying...

The MEAC thing ain't gonna happen ... I'd give myself a better chance of scoring a date with Elisha Cuthbert than of Hampton and S.C. State leaving that league.

As for Longwood ... I think it's pretty telling that Kallander let talk slip about Presbyterian well before the school even moved to Division I, and he refuses to comment any time Longwood's name is brought up. I think there's a better shot of Gardner-Webb moving to the Big South full-time. Longwood could end up in the Atlantic Sun.

You admit yourself that the HBCUs will stick together so that isn't a good point of trying to wait and see. The proposal by the MEAC coaches shows that they don't want to give up the playoffs and that is the only way that any of the schools leave. The MEAC administration would shoot themselves if they did something without the backing of the coaches and admins from the top schools in the league.

Answer me this - if you had a legit shot of leaving the Big South and joining the CAA, would you take it?

With that said - I don't know if Coastal will get a SoCon invite or not. It makes sense, but you know how things like that go. But if they do get an invite I think it will be pretty hard to turn down.

i never said you should not go, and if you do , rock on my friend. i just hope your move does not end up like Elon's. yes i would go to the CAA in a heartbeat. i know the options are slim, and the current BSC schools should stick together, but it is a business. thanks for coming by with your thoughts...why not go ahead and register?
