seems as though LANG (?) gave us a bit of love on the AGS board (in a thread started by one of our own)

nice to see.

IaaScribe wrote:I went through and made picks in every Big South game this fall, and this is how I see the final standings shaking out:

Coastal Carolina -- 9-2 overall, 4-0 Big South
Wins -- Elon, at Wofford, at Winston-Salem State, Furman, at VMI, Liberty, Savannah State, at Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern
Losses -- at Georgia Southern, South Carolina State

Liberty -- 7-4 overall, 3-1 Big South
Wins -- St. Paul's, Glenville State, at Savannah State, Gardner-Webb, Western Carolina, Charleston Southern, at VMI
Losses -- at Towson, at Wake Forest, William & Mary, at Coastal Carolina
**Note, I think the Western Carolina game could be a swing game between 6-5 and 7-4; I just kind of think the timing of it (Nov. 4) might favor LU

Gardner-Webb -- 6-5 overall, 2-2 Big South
Wins -- at Jacksonville, Tennessee Tech, Glenville State, VMI, at Charleston Southern, Wofford
Losses -- at Tenn.-Martin, Applachian State, at Southeast Louisiana, at Liberty, Coastal Carolina

Charleston Southern -- 6-5 overall, 1-3 Big South
Wins -- Wingate, North Greenville, at Savannah State, Edward Waters, VMI, Georgetown
Losses -- at Presbyterian, at The Citadel, Gardner-Webb, at Liberty, at Coastal Carolina
**I'm sorry, this team is a complete and utter fluke. They had no business beating either Liberty or Coastal last year. Both teams folded in the fourth quarter. The defense is still bad. There is no run game to speak of. Drafts is good, but that's not going to be enough. And you're playing Edward Freaking Waters? Come on.

VMI -- 1-10 overall, 0-4 Big South
Win -- Davidson
Losses -- at Norfolk State, at Richmond, at William & Mary, James Madison, at Army, Coastal Carolina, at Charleston Southern, at Gardner-Webb, at The Citadel, Liberty
**I'm a big Jim Reid fan, but there just isn't much talent here to work with. Jonathan Wilson is going to have a long senior year.

I was wondering how long it would take for that to get back here.

7-4 would be a heck of an accomplishment in Rocco's first year. LU hasn't had seven wins since 1997. I'd love to be proven wrong on Towson, W&M and Coastal, but in my estimation, LU has little chance at getting any of those three.

I know you want to see a HUGE leap, but as much excitement as Rocco has brought to LU, the man still hasn't coached his first college game as the head man. Even 6-5 would be considered a very, very good turnaround.

I gotta say that the boys on AGS are certainly an interesting lot (and they are all diehard for their team)

Its good to have another Flame on there, BJ. For the past couple of years it has been Libertine & myself for the most part. Now we have SJ & Medic over there as well.

Don't take much of what they say over there too seriously this time of year.

Take what Sly said and then add, "especially App fans."

Thanks Sly. I think that their expectations are fairly low for LU even with Coach Rocco. Here's what one of the guys said when I made my prognostication about LU to kick the thread off:
Thats pretty dang optimistic, but not sure if thats realistic.

As for my Apps, I say we go 9-2 with losses to NC State and Western Carolina to begin and end the season

I believe a 7-4 would be a great start for the Rocco era.

I would be satisfied with a 7-4, but I think that there is a great chance for a 8-4 year. However, I wouldn't be dissapointed with 6-5.

I would be very happy with 8-3 or better. 7-4 seems to be the consensus but I would be mildly disappointed or somewhat neutral. 6-5 would be a disappointment to me. I am taking into consideration our weak schedule. If the schedule were tougher I would make exceptions but that is not the case here. I just can't expect too much out of a first year coach because you never know what he brings to the table and since he has to clean up the mess Karcher left him. But the fact is that it has been 8 years since LU has had a good year in football and until we actually have a good year I will be a little bit of a doubter. But I think that things are headed in the right direction but not really sure until I see the product on the field.

I agree with stevev. I want to see the product on the field to change my viewpoint of the football team. But nevertheless I am still excited to see what we have this season.

6-5 would be a dissapointment? What are you smoking because I want some of it. 6-5 would include losses to Wake Forest (I-A), William and Mary (one of the top teams in one of the top I-AA conferences), Western Carolina (picked to finish 4th in the SoCon which could mean a playoff spot), Coastal Carolina (picked to win the SoCon, a team with 30-some ticked off seniors), and either a conference team (who 2 of 3 are picked higher than us) or Towson (who beat LU pretty soundly last year). 6-5 would be a good season.

Has there ever been a team go from winning no I-AA games to winning 6 in the same year?

I would think that we could win at least 1 of those so called "tough games" if our house was in order. Towson is not that good even though they were competitive in a great conference last year and returning a fair amount of starters. They did beat us handily but we sucked last year. Coastal Carolina has not really proven itself yet consistently agains't good competition even though last year's JMU games was their "shining moment". Between Western Carolina and William and Mary, I would think that beating any one of them is probable due to the games being at Williams Stadium. I guess we have to be realistic here but lets not sell the program short or lower our expectations because of our horrible past.

One homefield advantage we generally have is our turf but Western Carolina has the exact same stuff as us so they'll be used to it. I hope we win 7 or 8 games but I'm trying to be realistic. I don't think we'll get blown out in those games, but like I've said before, we have to learn to win before we start to win. I fully believe this year will be a 6-5 year, possibly 7-4, and then the 2007 season will be a 7-8 win season and conference championship.

UMass went from 1-10 to winning the national championship the next when Mark Wipple took over.

JMU went from 1-10 to 8-3 the next year and made the playoffs. I believe Curtis Keaton played on that team with coach Mickey Matthews.

LU did it with Morgan Hout. Went from 3-7 to 8-3 in our transition years from Div 2 to 1AA

Those are 3 examples that come to mind.

I'm looking at this year as almost 2 different seasons, Pre-Bye and Post-Bye. I will be happy iif we can get through the first half of the year with 2 solid wins v the D2s, any kind of win v Sav St., a minimum of injuries, no soul-sucking losses and a decent showing against Towson.
In my mind, if that happens, I'll feel very good about our chances in the 2nd half.

BTW, I don't know how you can say Towson isn't that good despite being competitive in the nation's best I-AA conference and returning numerous starters. That just doesn't compute.
Except for the CSU game, Coastal won the 4th quarter every week against some decent competition, Appy included. They singlehandedly ruined SC State's season.
W&M is always tough and will bring a fair amount of support into our house.

On the other side, if we get G-W and Coastal, I would not want to be Western, CSU or VMI. Our guys would be fired up enough to chew glass.

Since I'm in a Will Ferrell mode, we'll go with Old School: I have nothing to say. That was perfect.
