Does he have some sort of oxygen chamber like T.O. b/c that is one heck of a recovery...isnt he just 5 months or so removed from the ACL injury?

nope, no oxygen chamber-just a lot of hard work and a good doctor and physical therapist. surgery was beginning of october-they have done the cybex strength tests, the follow up x-rays, etc. and his doctor and physical therapist together made the decision! his doctor is the uva football team's "knee doctor" and he has apparently worked on some professional athletes as well (judging by the pictures with autographs and thank you notes hanging on his office walls).

It will be interesting to see if he plays in his first year. DL is a position we definitely need help, but we all know Rocco likes to red-shirt freshman. I think alot depends on how well his knee has healed.

I think that if there is a dire need and Ryan comes in and works hard, and is Ready for D-I Football, Rocco will give him a chance.

I love this quote from Ryan:
"The coaching staff cares for you more as a person than they do as a player. I liked that."

other than PK- I don't know that we have a "dire need" at any position.

Coach may disagree with me, though 8)

likely to see ALL these kids RS, both to acclimate to NCAA level athletics AND academics

I hate to bring up the injuries aspect, but I never feel good about depth at any position until the season gets underway. And even then ...

Yesterday Shipps was perfect inside 55, after working out. I know that means little come game time, but Im not sure how PK is going to struggle. I would think Punting may be an issue, but David Dr..... I hope Bevins can punt, too.

Bevins averaged 40 yards per punt in HS.

Not the best, but not horrible.

I saw that before, that could be a huge weekness although hopefully we will never see a punter

Punting stats are tough to gauge without context. How many of his punts were coffin corner? What about net average?

I dunno, is that really such a bad average?

The worst NFL punter this past season (Ryan Plackemier) averaged 40 yard per punt.

And the Super Bowl Champion's Punter only averaged 40.4.

I know there is a bit of apples to oranges when it comes to comparing us to the NFL, but I think as long as he isn't shanking half of his punts off the side of his foot, then he should be fine.

Here's the thing about punters... if he's averaging 40 ypp. thats fine if he's kicking it a mile in the air. punting isn't that much about distance of punts as it has to do with placement and how the ball gets to the returner. If the ball is kicked a mile in the air and only 40 yards that gives your coverage team to get down the field and allow for very few return yards if any. where as if you had a punter who kicked 60 yard line drives everytime you'd get eaten alive with a halfway decent opposing return team. I would take more hangtime less distance any day.

Got anything to back that up? Coach said yesterday that it's tough to say who will and won't redshirt until they get here. His first year, we had 24 guys and redshirted 12 of em. Last year we have 13 guys and redshirted 12 of em. (Those numbers may be one or two off.)

He averaged 45 yards per punt, with a net of 40. That's a lot different (and better) than just 40 yards per punt. That shows, like FFG said, that he puts good hangtime on the ball and sets up his coverage well.

And according to this, he gets good hangtime on his kickoffs, too. If this translates over to his collegiate career, he will do just fine, even if he is tossed into the fire right away.

I questioned him coming back so soon but after Rob told me about his success here recently I'm thinking he's not testing that knee to much!

Ryan's high school wrestling career came to an end this weekend when he made the state finals. He lost to Andrew Miller of Bassett, also a nationally ranked wrestler. He and Ryan have faced each other before and in most national rankings Ryan is right in front of Andrew. Although Ryan was disappointed (what true competitor wouldn't be after losing?) I would say he has nothing to be ashamed of. Not even five months after major knee surgery to make it back on the mat is an accomplishment and I would say lack of mat time was the difference in the match! And, just so everyone knows, the knee is fine! He saw Bill Gilespie yesterday at the wrestling tournament at LU and Bill asked him if he was going to start lifting for football now that wrestling was over and Ryan assured him he was. Here is the article on states from the news and advance...
