Is this a copyright issue? I'm not sure I understand. Wouldn't LU want this site... to have fans motivated and engaged in sports dialogue. It seems to me this site provides quite a service to the LU sport's program as it is a way for fans to opine. Will this simply be cosmetic or will this reduce our ability to use the site?

This has been going on since FlameFans started back in 2006. Any time we would criticize anything, the former owners of the site would get letters from Liberty threatening lawsuits. At the time, Liberty had no legal standing because there were no ads (aka no profiting) and the name of Liberty Flames wasn't used.

The only things that have changed since then are the addition of LibertyFlamesNation.com and the addition of ads to help cover costs. Because of this, Liberty can claim that Jon and Duke are profiting from the Liberty name.

Liberty has always wanted one thing: to know who is criticizing them. Since 06, their go to move has been to threaten a lawsuit. They'd drop the threat if posters on FlameFans were required to use their real names instead of screen names. The administration wants to know who is criticizing them so they can either fire them or blacklist them.

Sadly this shouldn't surprise anyone. So many things wrong with the way Liberty approaches things from a business perspective. I hope for change but I'm not holding my breath. Instead right now I just spend my time and money supporting other organizations.

Consider this a defining moment when the site has become something. As silly as a name change may sound, it puts you guys on the trajectory of many other once-independent blogs that have been rolled into SB Nation.

Nope. It's all about control. The Administration is all about controlling the narrative. Those in the Circle must have it from those outside or they are cast off. The #1 most difficult thing to do is have a rational conversation about Liberty in Lynchburg. It runs deep. There was a nice window a few years ago when things looked to be changing, but they have only reverted back and gotten worse.
Put simply, if you want anything to do with Liberty, you can not criticize anything they do at Liberty.

Its crazy to think about how long the core of this site has been around. Started on the Big South Espn message board in early 2000s, then the Firehouse in late 2004, and here with Flamefans. How much $ a month are we talking if we drop the ads and keep the domain name?

Bob Good will still get an earful when he calls and asks why I haven't renewed my FC membership and bought a bunch of club level football tix. It's sad but our school is not going in a positive direction right now and the Flamesnation stupidity is just confirmation that I'm making a good decision. No one really cares anyway... The money bags are overflowing (right now).
