About that last UNC touchdown--I was warned that the UNC coach would run up the score if he could.

My question is, would most college coaches have taken a knee a couple of times and run out the clock, rather than going with a no huddle offense and trying to go up by more than 20 points with fewer than 2 minutes left?

That is to say, was the UNC coach being a jerk, or was that just good coaching?

it's a coach trying to get his 2nd and 3rd stringers some reps

that way he knows what he has for conf games

and you can't fault kids for making the most of the opportunities they get...

I don't blame them/him at all- it's our guys' jobs to stop them

This was not a good game for us. There were plenty of positives, especially on defense and special teams. A few gaffes, but nothing that cannot be quickly fixed. However, the offense has stopped developing. We're going to be heavily relying on the defense and special teams again, unless something drastic happens quickly.

1. KEEP POSSESSION OF THE BALL. Interceptions and fumbling shows a lack of concentration by the players and a lack of proper emphasis by the coaches. 1 is a grave mistake; 6 is a catastrophe. If we minimize turnovers, we have a chance to be very good this season. If we don't, we'll win some games, but none against good or better competition.

2. Playcalling is fair in stretches, but, in critical moments, it is bad and flat out predictable. We couldn't consistently sustain drives against good competition, let alone UNC's starters. The screens/RB flares need to be re-drawn or abandoned. As soon as they start to develop, the defense knows what's coming and is on them in a heartbeat.

3. Starting QB has not developed. Still staring receivers down, poor ball location, and turning the ball over like he did in years past. Some of the blame can be on the receivers for dropping the ball, but a lot of it is on Woodrum. He's talented and a competitor, but we need to see dramatic improvement this upcoming week.

The talent is there on offense, but we need to put it on paper and quit talking like we are better than we are.

Overall grades:

Offense: D
Defense: B
Special Teams: B

Yes. We should do the same thing that he did.

He played his 2nd/3rd string guys in their system. That's good coaching.

IMO, its not a matter of running up the score, for whatever team is in the lead FBS vs FCS, 1AA vs D2. You know what you are possibly in for the minute you agree to take that check. That would be like if you don't want us to possibly run up the score you can give back 10 or 20K for each possession we call off the dogs.

There are some contracts floating out there that place restrictions on score differential, with a monetary penalty incurred if violated. As in, "every point in differential greater than 30 costs the host team $1,000 added to the original guarantee amount."

I'm not at liberty to comment on specifically-involved schools or sports, but they are out there and growing in popularity. Smaller schools are insisting on them to agree to play these kinds of games. And bigger schools agree, I believe, because what other recourse with winning as a high probability do they have when they need to fill the schedule?

In fairness to UNC on the last TD, there was too much time on the clock for them to run out the clock by taking a knee multiple times. They ran vanilla plays, and with fresh troops in the game at both RB and in the OL they got the ball in the end zone.

For the record, I did get to see the second half of the game, so I am not just commenting based on a box score.

Exactly. They have to be able to defend their #23 ranking. They were 31 1/2 point favorites. Winning by 20 wouldn't have looked to good.

We play that well against FCS teams and we control the line of scrimmage which leads to wins. Correct the TO problems and we should be pretty good, possibly really good.

It has taken me a couple of days to figure out what to post after watching the game from the stands. Obviously the result was really disappointing but there are some positives that I know will be beneficial for this team. There were two things that really stuck out to me. First was after Peterson fumbled, the offense went to sit down on the bench and Gill came over, yelled at them to stand up and basically talked to them during UNC's entire possession. I do not believe I've seen Gill get that riled up over a poor performance. It continued into the post game conference too. Gill was visibly agitated about Liberty giving the game away. I am not sure I've seen a football coach do that the last 7 years I've been at Liberty. I think the entire coaching staff has a mindset that this year needs to be different and that they are going to do whatever is necessary to ensure that happens. I know most thought "typical Liberty" but I really do think that it will be different this year.

I gotta be honest, I don't think it has. I know Chad Wilt used to call his guys out and coach them. Rocco had maybe one or two but for the most part, the head coaches haven't really been a part of that.

Question: On the radio, Alan York commented that the UNC students were chanting some pleasantries directed toward the LU players.

Can anyone fill me in on what they were chanting?

You can use @#$% for the good parts.
