Because the auto bid goes to the conference champion, and in every other sports league, be it professional, fauxmateur or youth sports there is a way to break ties. It's not difficult, and it's not controversial. The Big South even uses one but decides that everyone deserves a pussified medal even though the system to crown a champion is already in place. The only reason college sports brings this crap to the forefront is because schools don't give a dang about integrity when it can make an extra buck or two off of donors.
Find me the Liberty team photo with the 2009 championship trophy taken on the field at LaValle. Why doesn't that exist? Because Liberty didn't win anything that day. And yet here is our beloved Athletic Department whom we all support placing their flag on another championship Liberty didn't win. Kyle Vaglander's yearly trophy expenses might just be larger than the entire athletic budget of Charleston Southern.
Shame on the Big South for putting together this scam of a competition that has crowned 11 champions over the past 5 years
Shame on Liberty for advertising this as their 6th Big South Conference championship in the last however many years
Shame on the coaching staff for allowing men to think they won something more than second place today. It devalues what the players actually did accomplish this year
Shame on our fans who accept this season as one to be celebrated with a championship trophy.
Why do Liberty players deserve a trophy, or better yet, "their victorious moment?" Did anyone show up at the Gardner Webb with a block of wood so their seniors could feel like they won something? Why does "the moment" need to be accompanied with a hollow trophy? The guys who are finished should be proud of themselves for finishing a football career of hard work in which they made lifelong friends, became men and hopefully walk out of here with a degree. These guys should be proud of themselves because when everything was stripped away, they had the character to continue to work hard and stay determined. But the team should not be celebrated as the Big South Champions, because they are not deserving of that honor, whether we want to admit it or not.
Leave it to the Baptist PR guy to call a come from behind Coastal Carolina road victory a "screwy night."
