The defensive calls have been alarming. For the second straight week we allowed an opponent to streak through our defense without being touched for a long touchdown run.

Woodrum played well but today our defense let us down.

I like Woodrum. For a Frosh with a shaky OL he's doing fine. Remember the old saying 'The most popular player on the team is the back up QB.'

From what I saw, Woodrum has earned the starting QB spot (20/27, 236 isn't bad), but he does have a learning curve. Frankly, if I were given the choice between a Jr and a Fr that were about even, I'd choose the Fr every time--he'll only get better. Even if he makes Fr mistakes and gets game jitters at first, he'll have three more years to improve, and that's far better than turning the QB over every two years.

Our biggest weakness seems to be a lack of a full back and OL. Scat backs are okay only if you've got a big moose to ram it in short yardage and be a threat to occasionally rumble, or you've got a really huge OL that can blow holes for them to run through. It doesn't look like we have either.

We are making stupid mistakes at bad times. That's the epitome of our season right now. We've out gained every team we have played except for Norfolk State and they only out gained us by maybe 15 yards. We keep giving teams short fields or free points.

Josh has played a couple of games. The freshman reasoning is an excuse from here on out. If he's the starter, he's gotta play like it. I think he has a ton of talent and can be a great quarterback. He's just got to grow up fast.

The play calling inside the ten is suspect. We've passed twice when we could've and should've run it and it's cost us the game both times. Coach Stamn is just learning how to call plays so I'll give him some grace and some time to get his feet under him, but he's now had three games. Just like Josh, he's got to step up and make better decisions from here on out.

We've got a lot of new faces in a lot of new places, both on the sidelines and on the field. We've got injuries at important positions. However, we have now had two games to adjust to that and now have an off week to adjust even more. If we lose more than one game the rest of this season then it is a failing season.

I'm all for giving coaches and players a chance to gel and learn each other in the non-conference season. Conference season is different. Now is what counts. We better beat CSU, PC, VMI, and G-W and we absolutely need to beat Coastal or Stony Brook. I'm not expecting us to run through the conference season, but a losing season is not acceptable for us.

All I will say is that I was talking to another FFer this morning and I said that Josh's skill set would do extremely well in a spread style of offense, and watching AA and SCH last night, it made me wonder why this wasnt there the last couple games.

There is no “true” leader on this team, and there is no “I’m gonna step neck for 4 quarters mentality”, but more importantly there is a lack of maturity.

I would disagree with this.

Nick Sigmon obviously plays with that passion as does Pat Kelly.

I just didn't see that. I saw a kid staring down receivers, being lucky he only had 2 INTs, and getting credited with a TD on a play where he fumbled a full yard before the end zone. Woodrum has 3 picks against Montana (lost again yesterday) and Lehigh while Hudson threw 1 pick against Wake Forest and none against Norfolk State. Woodrum's got a lot of talent but he's not ready right now and he's not as good as Hudson right now.

I honestly don't think I've ever been as frustrated as I am after last night (and that comes from a Duke football fan as well). This team should be 3-1 period, end of discussion. Yes, I thought the officiating was tight last night and they missed a pass interference on our 2 pt. conversion but what are you going to do? We had Lehigh against the ropes and all we had to do was play smart and get some points on the board when we were up 20-14, whether a field goal or (preferably a TD) a two possession lead may have been all we needed in that match up. Then we allowed their QB to run in a long TD. Seriously? Seriously? It should have never come down to that 2 pt. conversion plain and simple.

I have a hard time equating the third down Lehigh play in their own territory, early in the game with the pass interference on the conversion? But with that said, I still think the refs called a fair game. You have to try and avoid having games come down to one play (last play), anything can happen from an officiating stand point. If you had to point to "one play" that effected the outcome most, it was when we put 11 men on the line of scrummage on third down and their quarterback called his own number.

I'm looking at the season stats and what strikes me is the fact we have been sacked 13 times and have 8 TOs. The opposition has been sacked 5 times and has 3 turnovers . . not to mention the disparity in penalties. Either the opposing teams are playing a flawless/near perfect game against us or we aren't putting enough pressure on the QB to create TOs. Unfortunately, our TOs are huge since they seem to lead to direct scores versus just a change of possession. If the game was just a matter of breaks and law of averages, then we're in for a great second half of the season for the "breaks" to balance out. This team has the talent to run the table including beating SB here. Just a few thoughts

We are spoiled. We've gotten used to winning in the OOC part of the season, with a couple cupcakes and then JMU or someone like that to make us remember how to play a decent team, plus an FBS school that we might be able to hang with. This season, we've got a tougher OOC schedule, and we're panicking.

We were spoiled at Wake. We didn't know what to expect, and most expected the worst, and we had a team that could have won the game, on the road, against a team that will probably be playing in a bowl game this winter. Our expectations shot up then, and now they've had to come back down to earth again. This might not be the season we expected (I know I was thinking we'd be 2-2 right now ...), but there is some promise for the future with this team and staff. We just have to be patient.

To 're load' you have to have a tradition of winning, especially big games (we don't) and stability in coaching staff (we don't). When we start doing THOSE things or at least 1 of those things we can re load. Right now we rebuild.

1. running game was very nice. AA seemed to have his burst back and Sir Chauncey was finding the holes.
2. special teams did very well today. Lunsford and Bowden impressed me and the guys were much better on punt and kickoff returns.
3. the no quit factor is still there. these guys play hard
4. woodrum was stand-up in his post game interview. he took the blame and that showed me his leadership skills.

negatives
1. our OL was getting manhandled in pass blocking
2. our OL was very undisciplined
3. our play calling in the red zone was suspect
4. too many defensive let downs. the colvin run for a TD as well as his scrambling ability left many wide open Lehigh players.

i tell you i get more frustrated with this team by the week. dont get me wrong, i will support them through thick and thin, but the penalties and turnovers are killing us. It is lack of discipline and i equate that to coaching. I am of the thought that offensively we need to let the QB's whoever is playing throw more deeper routes. all of the underneath and slant routes will be figured out by other teams. I do think we lack in play making ability at the receiver position. Pat is a solid possession receiver but im not sure he can make the big play and the other guys have not shown the ability to make a clutch catch. I think the guys will fight till the end, but at the end of the day, if we do not cut out the penalties and turnovers we will continue to have a tough season. Realistically we should win the rest of our games other than coastal which right now i call a tossup, and Stonybrook has only had one suspect effort and that was last night, but did what they had to do to win. It could very well come down to a tiebreaker again so i hope that could work out to our favor. I have said this from day one that i was cautiously optimistic about the Gill hire and his assistants and i still hold to that. I just think better coaching in regards to our penalty and turnover issues and the suspect play calling at times have killed us. had this been cleaned up i think 2-2 would have been where we stand now. i do not want to hear about we are the best 0-4 team in the country either. 0-4 is 0-4. lastly, just hope the fan base hangs in there. great crowd last night and the students have really stepped up their game. im sure the kool-aid chuggers will crucify me because im being critical, but as a true fan im allowed to voice concerns or criticisms. GO FLAMES!

Of these three coaches, none have a winning record as a head coach. I am not questioning the character of this coaching staff or their success off the field. But their records on the field doesn't look good.

Here is my view from the game:

Good:

1. Run Game. Like Smoothie, I was impressed with AA and SCH. both really gashed the defense.
2. Josh Woodrum. He has shown his scrambling ability which can serve him well. To make a big play out of it though he is going to need help from the receivers (see below)
3. Special teams. Lunsford probably got a nice boost from hitting the two field goals last night and that can only help him going forward. Ryan Ayers is a very good punt returner, and Kevin Fogg...well, he is Kevin Fogg. He keeps being one move away from busting out a huge return...he is probably gonna be taking kicks back on Sunday next year.

Bad:
1. Offensive Line #64 put us in 1st and minus yardage on I think three consecutive series yesterday. The guys need to maintain their composure because if we get in too many of those situations, the defense eventually does pin their ears back and we see what that can lead to.

2. Wide Receivers. Pat Kelly is doing well, but as Smoothie astutely noted, we need guys to step up and make big plays. I think I said to myself at least twice yesterday that we need to send somebody on a seam route much like we did against Wake Forest or some sort of deep middle routes to soften up the second and third levels.

3. Defensive backs. I wanted to pull my hair out with the number of times we had them in minus yardage situations and Colvin just pulled a chuck and pray and they got about 25-30 yards.
