actually, that's SCAR and me.

Hopefully this year we will handle our business and win games that we are supposed to win. There is lots of energy around the program, but until the team steps on the field who knows what will happen.

SPC Folks - Does this have any impact on your football program? I'm guessing since this guy was at the helm when you brougth back the sport, he would be considered a friend of football.

Saint Paul's College president resigns
LAWRENCEVILLE -- The president of Saint Paul's College is leaving to take a job at Paul Quinn College in Texas, school officials announced this week.

John K. Waddell, 44, has been at Saint Paul's for five years and was starting a new five-year contract. He was appointed by President Bush in 2002 to the President's Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

"We're really going to miss him," said Kethan Wilson, provost and vice president for academic affairs at the Episcopal Church-affiliated school. "He's been an outstanding leader for Saint Paul's College."

During Waddell's tenure at Saint Paul's, enrollment increased to about 700, the college gained provisional state accreditation for its teacher education program and brought back Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association football after a 15-year hiatus.

Paul Quinn College, with about 900 students, is a member of the United Negro College Fund and is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Nahhhhh. Not gonna go there.

My bonehead remark confusing Sly and Medic. Of course, the HOUSTON teams haven't won a title since Jordan first retired (and the COMETS don't count, Sly).

The more we hear about the president leaving at St. Paul's, the more troubling it appears for the school. Here's a story from this weekend in the Richmond fishwrap:
Saint Paul's College president seeks new challenge
Waddell proud of the progress made during tenure

BY JAMIE C. RUFF
TIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITER Jul 9, 2006

John K. Waddell said he is leaving Saint Paul's College better off than he found it, with the pieces in place for its sustained growth.

Waddell, 44, is leaving Saint Paul's, where he has been president for a little more than five years, to become president of Paul Quinn College in Texas, officials announced last week. Waddell hopes to begin his new job Aug. 1.

"I felt like if I was going to go, this was the right time to do it," he said when reached by cell phone as he traveled late last week.

Both Saint Paul's, in Lawrenceville, and Paul Quinn, in Dallas, are historically black colleges. Waddell said he first heard about the opening at Paul Quinn as a member of the President's Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, an appointment he received from President Bush in 2002. Waddell said he kept hearing "about this great college in an urban area that needed skills I had."

Paul Quinn has about 900 students and is a four-year, undergraduate, coeducational, Christ-centered, liberal-arts institution, affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, according to its Web site.

"Christian development of students [is] foundational to the combining of intellect with faith," the college declares.

Waddell said he is comfortable with the affiliation with the AME church, noting that Allen University in Columbia, S.C., where he was president before Saint Paul's, was also founded by the church.

Moreover, Waddell said, Saint Paul's seems to have a good foundation in place, including a strong provost in Kethan Wilson, and energy brought by new members to the school's board of trustees.

"They are very focused," Waddell said. "They really seem to be engaged and ready to grapple with things."

Among Waddell's accomplishments is renovation and other improvements to student housing and stabilization of the school finances, accomplished in part by booting out students who were not paying their tuition.

Enrollment at the school has also increased to about 700, and the college gained provisional state accreditation for its teacher-education program, a school official noted last week.

But Waddell said his biggest accomplishment at Saint Paul's has been the revamping of its core curriculum to help students be more analytical and able to solve problems.

"It's not the most exciting thing in the world, but when you talk about higher education, it's very important," he said.

James B. Spurlock Jr., who chaired the search committee that brought Waddell to Saint Paul's before leaving the school's board of trustees' two years ago, praised his leadership.

"Dr. Waddell was a great man and a good leader for Saint Paul's College," he said.

In February, Waddell said FBI agents asked school officials to turn over computer files. Waddell dismissed the request as a result of "sour grapes" by those disgruntled with his changes.

Last week, Waddell said he has not heard anything more about the investigation and it played no part in his decision to leave the school.

Waddell said he would have liked to have seen development of his plans for construction of new dormitories and a capital campaign, "but all these things are on the table."

"Whether I'm there or not, it's simply executing the agenda."

Waddell said Saint Paul's is in a good place and could benefit from new energy.

"I've done my best to take what I've had and made it better," Waddell said. It's not perfect "but we moved the ball."

Any of our SPC friends have any idea what is going on here? Hopefully this changing of the guard won't affect the football team.

If $$$ is an issue, instead of dropping football they'll probably just drop to DIII and add water polo

I am amazed that a school that had problems paying bills to a local builder for campus building and renovations even has the $$ for low-level D-II football.

i would let some of our SPC friends chime in on this before we speculate. obviously the former president was a good fundraiser. A lot of HBCU's especially in the CIAA that did not have football, have brought it back, mainly due to alumni money and pressure, and the fact they say it galvanizes the schools, and provides great opportunities to mingle and renew relationships

Looks like I may need to bring a beach ball to this game. The second half could be a little boring.

We have a ton of young players and an entire team adjusting to new schemes. Even if this turns into the blowout most of us expect (albeit cautiously) then there will be plenty to watch the entire four quarters. I expect plenty of substitutions so the staff can really see what they have to work with from a game perspective.

And I'm getting more juiced by the moment watching that clock on the top of the board tick down.
