From our good buddy Andy Bitter at the N&A... I was told before I left town yesterday and had it confirmed from my old boss at UVA that this is a done deal and that he is now a Flame.

Marshal Ausberry, who started 11 games at right guard for Virginia in 2005, has been granted his release and will transfer to either Liberty or James Madison, his father confirmed Thursday.

Ausberry, a fourth-year junior who will finish his sociology degree at UVa this spring, met with Liberty head coach Danny Rocco on Thursday and is expected to make a decision about his playing future by the end of the weekend.

Since Ausberry, who redshirted in 2003, will finish his degree in four years, he can transfer to a Division I-AA school for a fifth year of eligibility as a graduate student.

A move to the Flames would reunite the 6-foot-5, 323-pound Ausberry with right tackle Eddie Pinigis, who transferred to Liberty on the eve of last season. The two started side-by-side for Virginia against Maryland, Boston College and Florida State in 2005.

If Ausberry transfers to Liberty, it would fill a need on the Flames' offensive line. Jarrett Winfrey, an all-Big South selection who started all 11 games at right guard last season, has used all of his eligibility. Backups Zach Davis and Bryan Mosier return on the offensive line, but neither started a game last season.

Though Ausberry is also considering James Madison, where his father lettered in 1976 and '77, Liberty is the frontrunner, Ausberry Sr. said.

Attempts to reach Ausberry Jr. were unsuccessful.

Ausberry started all but one game in 2005, replacing two-time Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner Elton Brown, but relinquished the starting right guard spot to Ian-Yates Cunningham last fall. He and Cunningham rotated early in the year but Ausberry saw his playing time dwindle as the season progressed.

He spoke to Groh earlier this week and was granted a release from his scholarship.

Ausberry, who played high school ball at West Springfield in Fairfax County, is the third fourth-year player with eligibility remaining who will not return to UVa next season. Quarterback Kevin McCabe expects to transfer to a Division II school. Keenan Carter, who was squeezed out of the nose tackle rotation last year, will try to catch on with an NFL team.

Unlike those who have left the Virginia football program under more contentious circumstances in the last few years, this split appears to be amicable.

"My wife and I are very appreciative of the University of Virginia and Coach Groh for recruiting (our son) and giving him a scholarship," Ausberry Sr. said.

"We have nothing bad to say about UVa. I think any young man that gets a scholarship up there is blessed to be able to do that."

I don't know about a kid from VT but I do know that former UVA Strong Safety Ryan Best is an option.

Well after searching for some of Friday's articles Jay Jenkins from the daily progress in c-ville sheds some more light!!!!
Pair of Cavaliers decide to transfer
Ausberry enrolled at Liberty; Best looking at Liberty, Temple, Rutgers

By Jay Jenkins / jjenkins@dailyprogress.com
January 19, 2007

Weeks before the 2006 season started, Virginia offensive lineman Marshal Ausberry spoke openly of his goals for the months that awaited.

Sure, Ausberry wanted to play as much as he could for the Cavaliers, but his priority was to secure his diploma.

While the playing time never materialized like it had when he started 11 games in ’05 under former offensive line coach Ron Prince, Ausberry completed the requirements for his degree in sociology in December.

Having reached his No. 1 goal, Ausberry elected to look elsewhere to finish his final season of eligibility. Ausberry, who played in 27 games for UVa, has already enrolled as a graduate student at Liberty University.

“He is already down there,” his mother, Robyn, confirmed on Thursday.

Ausberry played in 10 games this season, most of which came on special teams, after rising senior Ian-Yates Cunningham took over the starting duties at right guard, the position Ausberry manned in ’05.

Ausberry may have some company playing for Liberty coach Danny Rocco, a former assistant at Virginia.

Ryan Best, a safety that played sparingly last season, confirmed that he will not practice this spring with the Cavaliers. He said he is looking at Rutgers or Temple, which are closer to his home in Williamstown, N.J., in addition to Liberty.

A move to Liberty would not only allow him to join Ausberry, but also two other former Cavaliers - defensive end Vince Redd and offensive lineman Eddie Pinigis.

Best, however, will need to take two classes this semester at UVa to secure his degree in sociology. That remains his priority.

“I won’t be practicing football,” Best said, “but I will be working out around Charlottesville throughout the spring with [former UVa players] Fontel Mines and Deyon Williams.”

The situation, Best said, is not easy.

“It’s definitely a tough decision. The decision is still up in the air and I have a lot of friends that I’m going to have to leave if I do make that decision,” he added. “But I think it would probably be better for myself and my future.”

Best joined the football team as a walk-on tailback in 2004 after starting eight games at goalie on Virginia’s soccer team in 2003. After failing to appear in a football game his first season, Best was shifted to safety and emerged as a contributor in 2005 - he made 14 tackles, including five in an upset win over No. 4 Florida State.

Best, who is 5-foot-11 and 205 pounds, was forced into action that season to help Virginia’s depleted secondary. He saw most of his playing time on third downs in the Cavaliers’ nickel package late in the year after the team’s two starting safeties - Tony Franklin and Nate Lyles - were unable to play.

Franklin, who had been suspended by coach Al Groh, and Lyles, who suffered a season-ending injury against Georgia Tech, returned this season, however, knocking Best off the team’s two-deep.

Most in ACC circles know of Best for his miraculous story off the field. In February 2005, Best was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. Successful surgery removed malignant cervical lymph nodes, and chemotherapy started soon after.

Despite his medical condition, Best often joined his teammates in practices and workouts. He was declared cancer-free just prior to the start of training camp in 2005.

For his bravery, Best was named the recipient of the 2005 Brian Piccolo Award by the ACC.

the kid does NOT want to play at Temple- who would.

And if he didn't get PT at UVa, I seriously doubt he would at Rutgers.

sounds like he'd be a help for us, though.

how's his speed and leaping ability?

Well, they can't hurt except for limiting the amount of scholarships we can give out to incoming freshman. How much eligibility does Ausberry have left?

Ausberry is a much needed pickup if we are to continue to improve our O-Line performance which has been our problem for quite some time now. With Pinigus and Ausberry we have 2 "big time" linemen who could take over and be a mentor to the younger freshmen coming in. Our performance in that area last year was lacking as it has been but with Ausberry and possibly more O Linemen transferes coming in and looking at what we have from last year things are looking really good. The safety will help but not a definate starter but could possibly play along side Geiser.

I guess that means 3 transferes are coming next year including Vince Rede with the possiblilty of more (including Vic Hall and some O Linemen). I am all for transferes coming in at this time to bring the program to the next level then when we get there we need to focus on the freshmen. We need to get to a point where we blow the Big South out of the water and can complete with the App States and the UMass's of the 1AA world. It looks like things are headed in the right direction.

If Vic Hall ain't coming then are we okay at QB for next year. That position was a problem throughout much of the season.

Did you watch the last 3-4 games? Brock Smith played extremely good. Brock's our QB for the next two years. It's his job to lose.

Yes I did listen to the games. Brock seemed to do very well but the competition was a bit weak at the end of the season. That is my only concern. Did Brock really improve or did the competion make him look better than he really was.

Brock definitely needs to improve after his true sophomore season. But he's shown us enough to believe he can be the man. I don't feel uneasy having him be the QB this fall with ZT also available to us. Now I'm feeling better by the minute about our O-line as well. We don't enter the spring with any glaring needs other than someone to emerge as the kicker IMHO.

VMI is bad (Look at what Richmond, Citadel, and William and Mary did to them)! It is hard to place judgement on Chuck South due to a terribly weak schedule but I don't think they are too legitimate right now.

Even though VMI was 1-10 last year, they looked much better than I've seen them in quite some time. They were much more disciplined and actually played better team ball as the year wore on. Reid is doing some really good things up there with those guys. The way that they nearly beat Coastal and fought back against us speaks volumes for that.

VMI is going to be a good team. I saw them with my own two eyes. They were better than Western Carolina.
