going to go over to the VMI board and read how "competetive" they were, and how they hung in there, and how great they're gonna be next year

guess those "youth pastors" and "Fartwell" kids can play football, huh?

:D unbelievable

MO, you're good people- but you guys are MASTERS of the "glass half full"

yet another game where you guys saw something the rest of the country did not, evidently!

A few things to note here--some of which might surprise you.

Coming into the game, we were ranked first in the Big South in red zone defense.

Our punt coverage team had given up a just a little over 4 yards per return.

We're the top rushing team in the conference.

We're second in total offense.

First in third down conversions.

Second in Kickoff returns.

Kyle Hughes leads the conference in passing efficiency.

We're first in time of possession.

We moved the ball on Liberty for 291 yards today with one OL starter remaining from the beginning of the year. We have several players who have to change jerseys during the game to make the OL go.

Our interior DL was hell today. Liberty got nothing up the gut; they had to beat us to the corners with speed. When's the last time we could say that?

Consider these Jim Reid comments after today's game:

...we just can’t get discouraged. We laid the plan out early and we are going to keep these guys red-shirted. I just got finished telling a reporter that in the first spring we had 26 scholarships in our program. This spring, if everyone stays and no one has left yet, we should have 45 in spring practice. Now we are at least beginning to look like a Division I-AA program numbers wise, and we just have to keep working, stay focused, and we can’t forget what happened to us today and we need it to motivate us to be better.”

So we've accomplished the above and been in position to win three of our four conference games with about 30 scholarships, the majority of which are in the lower two classes.

We should be impressed. We should be hopeful.
Liberty's speed and our turnovers were the difference today. Could have made it a game dealing with either, but not both.

uh- yeah. Ok.

all that smack before hand, and now .... denial.

I found this very interesting from the article:
The Flames (7-3, 3-0) scored the game's first 24 points, as a switch from their usual 3-4 defense to a 4-3 scheme designed specifically for this game worked wonders. VMI managed just two first downs on its first five possessions as it fell into a hole it had no chance of escaping.

Perhaps a 4-3 scheme would work wonders against other competition as well...

I never saw a 4-3

I saw Vince on the line with Ackley/Richard and Dugan, and then Ian, SRL, Hursky, and Duke at linebacker.

If anything, thats a 2-5 with Vince out there.

I was talking to one of the VMI fans during the third quarter over by the fieldhouse. He was an older gentleman, but not overly so (well maybe to a 25 year old college senior he would be), and I told him how I think VMI has something special potentially with this team, and how Coach Rocco really did a great job turning Liberty around. He mentioned how he is really impressed with how Liberty looks as well. He knew that his team was being dominated, and he knew I had every chance to pretty much let him know, but I figure that he is still older than I am so I wanted to be respectful about it.

You apparently weren't watching the same game as us.

It was a 4-3. We had the interior defensive linemen in 3-point stances, with the DE's (Duke and Redd) in 2-point stances on the outside. The outside backers (SRL, Childress) were stacked over the DE's with Hursky in the middle.

That's called a 4-3.

VMI fans are whining about our students being behind their bench and how we were loud and obnoxious the entire game.

Grow the eff up and learn how college football is. We're tame compared to big-time programs.

I just read that thread on their board. I don't agree with them, but I understand where they're coming from. They have a perception of what they expect "Christian" students to act like and they also come from a school where the administration can enforce behavior with a very heavy hand. Obviously perception is not reality and we can't affect behavior in the same way a military school can. I still haven't managed to get into their board, so I can't post over there, but if I could, I'd probably encourage them not to take things so seriously. I understand that they find fan taunting offensive, but I don't understand why they take it so seriously. It's all in good fun.

Where I absolutely 100% disagree with them is that we should move our students or the visiting team's bench. Our students have always occupied the other "half" of the stadium. Always. Just because they're loud (and present) now doesn't mean we should give the opponents the advantage of sitting in front of our quiet older folks. We've got 7000 loud kids over there and they have to sit on one side or the other. Why would we want to sit them behind the home team?

In regards to the 4-3...doesn't Vince count TWICE all by himself??

Definitely a great day for the Flames. To answer the one poster's question about this being the best offense ever at LU? Without a question it is. The record book says so. We set a school record for most points in a season in our 9th game  . We've scored 60+ points in 2 games, and have scored at least 30 in every game except for one.

Defense played very well except for 2 drives in the 2nd quarter. Jon, I don't remember seeing Redd get down in a 2 point stance, looked like to me he was standing the whole time. It was definitely not a 3-4, but either a 4-3 or 2-5. Doesn't matter now though. I wish GW would have beat Coastal, but we still have to win, and I'm sure they will be very fired up.

Noone likes an obnoxious fan when they are being obnoxious toward your team.

We had some complaints in the MBB forum about a leatherlunged San Diego State fan who was pretty much ruining the radio broadcast of the game for us LU supporters. he wasn't very creative, but he wasn't profane, and a lot of the stuff he was saying was not much different than what out fans say.

Smoothy, I don't know how you question that number. The Baptist side was just as full as it has been all year if not more full. The student side ended up being pretty packed except for the old visitor section. There were several people on the hill as well.

I thought it looked "fuller" (is that a word?) than homecoming, so if anything we should question those figures.

FYI jcmanson. A 2 point stance IS standing!

3 point stance = 1 hand down
4 point stance = 2 hands down

Gotta agree w/ my homie SMOOTH on this one- at least my impression of the numbers. I'm sure if you were there in person, you'd have a different perspective- but my initial impression upon watching on TV was 11-12k tops.

the Baptist side DID look pretty full, though. Overall, great crowd- and the TV crew must have mentioned it, as well as our national ranking for crowd size, about 20 times!

I don't know much about 4-3, 3-4, or 2-5 defenses, but this is what Rocco had to say in Lang's article about our new look defense against VMI:
"We made a decision in February that we were going to change our defensive play against VMI," LU coach Danny Rocco said. "We brought a gentleman down here from West Point who I've known for a long time, and he had coached against the Naval Academy and VMI. We implemented their defense, their schemes, their terminology, everything they did up there. We kind of went wholesale with it."
Sounds like Rocco would have made a good Boy Scout, because he certainly had his team PREPARED to play against VMI.

Ummm, no. I saw Vince down in a 3 and Duke up in a 2. Vince played end. That's what I saw. I tend to watch Vince on defense, but I could be wrong...

We played a modified 4-3. It was basically a 4-3 stack. Believe me, they've been working on it for a while.

#127010
I had no idea they've been working on it...then again I have no reason of knowing...I wasn't sure if it was actually the 4-3 or some kind of modified 3-4, but as the game went on i realized it was actually 4-3

I am not an expert when it comes to football by any means, so it takes me a while to catch on to these things

1 more thing: Was anyone else totally taken back by the sheer amount of starting big talent was in the Senior line-up before the game. That's scary! I know we've got talent in the wings, but that's a big group of contributors gone.

It is, but I'm not too worried just yet. If anything, defense will be my main concern.

Edit: I take that back. I hadn't really thought about all of our QB's favorite targets being in the class as well. Guess it will be interesting to see who steps up to fill the Jackson/Turner/Luck void next season.

Ohhh 6-7?? Man, wrap it up then 😭
