Special Teams: (C) why did TODAY have to be the return of the streaky placekicking game ?
missed PAT and blocked FG could've REALLY hurt us. Returns were nothing spectacular today, either.
It was a 49-yarder. It had to come out low to get the distance, and they just got a hand on it.
Defense: (B) good, but what was with those penalties? a bit sloppy
It's something about Coastal. There was a lot of pushing and shoving both ways. Our guys made some stupid penalties, I won't lie about that, but there's just something about it when these two teams play. Look at last year and this year. Our penalties (especially unsportsmanlike) go up exponentially in the Coastal game. We haven't had these types of penalties all year until tonight. Say what you want about Coastal fans not caring about Liberty, but the two teams hate each other.
QUESTION: Why did Will have the intentional grounding called on him early on? He was outside the pocket, threw it past the LOS, and it was at a receivers feet. I didn't get it.
Happened right in front of me. It was questionable at best. However, it was not something, that early, for CDB to blow a gasket on. He went frickin crazy.
great crowd for sure...made the game a lot of fun....and like others have said, it was the most together I have ever seen the student section at a football game....and they were actually quiet when needed and loud when needed....great stuff!
Most of the time. We had to yell at some groups a few times to shutup, but they got the point.
ps....thank you to Anthony Steele for being an idiot and making it fun til the end....and classless as well....did anybody else notice how he flipped off the student section going into the locker room at halftime??? classless...and absolutely hilarious
I have him on camera flipping us off at least twice.
Student section: Someone joked to me that the student section finally got things unified, and now I can graduate in peace, and I agree with them. I honestly didn't do some of the cheers, just so I could sit back and hear the rest of the students do it. The way the "First down! Oooh move those chains, move those chains, move those chains, huh" was unified was simply amazing (got it on tape). We started "You can't do that" chant last year for penalties and had been doing it some this year. I had to step back one time because I heard that chant coming from the opposite end of the stands before we could even start it up. Amazing Grace at the end was awesome too.
We did something on offense that I've wanted to see for a while but hadn't, and it made me happy: we let Brock run the ball some. The kid isn't lightning quick, but he can move, and he'll knock over some people if they're not ready for it.
I got to see a friend of mine before the game that I hadn't seen since the Big South Tournament in 06. She's the cheerleading coach and does the type of stuff Kevin Keys does. She was amazed that we could do thunder sticks because they always told her she couldn't do them because it was against Big South rules. I also found out that our reputation has gotten pretty good in terms of being a tough place to play because of our students.
Libertine texted me during the game and said he couldn't hear the band because the students were so loud.
Oh yea, we started singing the National Anthem with the band. It sounds dumb, but it was hilarious.
Something I posted on Coastal's board before I even came on here that needs to go on here:
You should be proud of Jerome Simpson.
Any of you guys that know me know that I will rag on a player in fun, tell them great game afterwards and hope they know it's all in fun. Others around me, not so much. Through the first quarter and a half, we gave Jerome hell pretty much (we were right behind the offensive bench). In the past, Jerome would've mouthed off, shot us a bird or something like that. Today, he didn't even acknowledge us and just went about his business. He was very professional and very, very mature. He didn't talk trash on the sidelines or anything after that.
Halfway through the 2nd quarter I started yelling some stuff at him saying he probably wishes he was back at Reidsville (they finished undefeated this year) and just naming stuff of from his high school and he cracked a smile or two from it. In the fourth quarter, after his touchdown catch (which was amazing) I yelled at him that it was a great play and he gave me the "Thanks" head nod. I told him he'd be playing on Sundays next year and to represent North Carolina well and he just sat there nodding his head and I could tell he appreciated it. After the game I was on the field and told him great game again.
I fully expected him to get angry, blow off some steam, and things like that. He was by-far one of the most mature people on your team tonight and proved why he's a captain. You guys should be proud he was representing you.
Their offensive coordinator cusses like a sailor.
Fortson needs to start for them. Will Richardson is terrible, and Fortson is suited better for their spread offense. With a running threat at QB, plus Tolbert's bowling ball running, and O'Neal's flat out lightning quick speed, they could cause some problems.
Jerome Simpson is just good. We held him in check yardage wise tonight, but part of that is their ineptness at quarterback. He proved why he's going to be playing on Sunday's. The second catch just had students turning to each other with their jaws dropped, etc.
They could very well beat G-W next week and quite frankly, I hope they do. Coastal showed flashes of talent tonight, and if they can get some guys in their on their OL and DL, and get a QB (which they may have in redshirt freshman Jamie Childers) then they'll be a good team. They're not going to be down long.
I hope this turns into a rivalry. I really do. It's obvious that the two teams on the field don't like each other, and our students don't like Coastal, we just have to get the Coastal fans to actually care about Little Ole Liberty, and then we could have us something fun on our hands.
