Did I mention my idea to call it The Barbershop on here? I don't know, I like that. It's cheesy, corny, and just sounds cool to me. Throw a barber's pole on there next to the text. I like it. I know it won't stick, I just like it.

I still say we should light the eagle on fire and just be the Flaming Eagles...and I prefer Frenzies over Fanatics

As far as the new logo being overused, that is exactly what is supposed to happen for identity. Too many logos and there is no unity. Just look how many ways we have the interlocking letters LU. Pick a design and stick with it. I thought the design of the tribal flames in the shape of an eagles head was unique among college logos. I do find the logo is hard to see on the football helmets though. You almost have to have a white background for the logo to show up good and stay with the red eagle and blue script.

For those of you that dislike the eagle, what type of mascot do you think would best represent the word Flames? A person dressed up as a torch? I see why we use an eagle then, as well as the historical and meaning aspect as well. There are several pro sports teams that have names that are just difficult to represent in the form of a mascot. Arena football's Georgia Force comes to mind. How do you represent the word force in a mascot.
Here's their answer, named Blu. Image

I like the Barbershop name, but obviously is limited in use. I think we need something that will last beyond coaches or AD.

I'm all for a secondary logo, but we just need to be consistent in branding the LU Flames identity.

Flaming Eagles means gay eagles. I'm not brokeback. If we do that, I'm leaving. No offense Brokeback, I still love ya, just don't touch me.

I agree about something that would last longer than a coach or AD. Barbershop just sounded funny.

The only two I can think of are The LUnatics and The Flock.

The Flaming Idiots
The Combustible Compadres
The Williams Whackos

... I'm grasping at straws.

It's good to be loved!!! I am suprised I did not think of that name!! Perhaps Flaming Flames? At any rate, I am not sure what you should call it. BarberShop is nice, but what would you do in 2 or 3 years when he is gone? BaldShop?

The LUnatics is pretty clever, I like that. Also, just noticed someone who registered with the name Libertines, that could be used.

The beginnings of a short list?

The LUnatics
The Frenzies
The Libertines
The Freedom Riders
The Afterburners
The Firestarters

Any more ideas?

Also how about more discussion on the 1) helmet thing and the 2) What would the Div. 1A Top 25 Liberty Football team Williams Stadium look like if you could design it?

My perspective on this dilemma:

I like the eagle concept just fine, ... but I like the Flames ideas better.

If you want to keep the bird thing around, drop the eagle and bring in the Phoenix! I think that the idea of a phoenix mascot rules.

Just a thought.

Is there any way to incorporate the old football game marshmallow fights into any of these new traditions? Man, those were fun! The new kids have no idea...

So, no one wants to pony up on the helmet thing or a proposed idea for what a DIA Williams Stadium should look like--grass or turf, dome or no dome, Jeffersonian Columns on the exterior, Scoreboards, Cauldrons, Fire breathing dragons, etc.

You might start a new thread on each of the specific topics. We've discussed all of them eithe ron the old board or this one. But since we have so many new faces around here it might be cool to rekindle those discussions.

Nice, SJ. But we need to get you some more recent pics. We haven't used those helmets in a couple of years now.

hmm, I missed this thread apparently. A few observations:

I absolutely hate named student sections. It takes the focus away from the teams and places it on the fans. I guess in our circumstance it may help just bring any attention to sports which is needed. So it could be a neccisary evil. yuk.

Fire vs Eagle

We are the liberty flames. That is not going to change. Our mascot is an eagle. Why is that? Because fire mascots are stupid. There are 3 teams that I know of that are flames and these are their mascots:

Calgary Flames: Harvey the Hound
Image

Liberty University: LU (EWU mascot pictured, but it's the same costume)
Image

University of Chicago-Illinois: Sparky D. Dragon (the one on the left)
Image

common attribute: none of them are fire.

Other Mascots:

Chicago Fire: Sparky
Image

and of course we all remember flicker, the mascot for who knows what:
Image

So in conclusion, deal with the eagle.

Our helmet, here's an idea. A bad one in my opinion. NFL Europe's Rhein Fire

That flicker pic still slays me everytime I see it.

Frankly, I don't hate the Rhein Fire helmets. I like the concept of some fire on the helmets. Perhaps with some more color like the fuel tank on a Harley and I'm cool with it. But then again, I am approaching the midlife crisis portion of my life.
