You love the Wake thing, and that was important to them. It worked for them.

You love the cross idea at W&M because it was your idea and it works for W&M.

We're not Wake. We're not W&M. Those things don't work here.

True, I do love the Wake thing. It seemed to be very good timing being right before the big quarter. You could feel the energy throughout the stadium. I was caught off guard by it at the ACCCG since I really did not know that this practice had this much of a following.

Rarely do you witness large masses of people across denominations and faiths acknowledging a higher purpose. Typically, we're all segmented up into our splinter groups and pray with people of similar beliefs. It is a very powerful moment.

With regards to the cross at W&M, I believe that the cross has shown itself in Virginia to be as important as ever after the VA Tech shootings. People know to turn to God in a time of crisis. It is important that the people of faith do not let the secularists plant the seeds of doubt to take this hope away from those who need it. Falwell's life was about planting the seed of hope that God exists for people who want to accept him.

If we're gonna do anything before the 4th quarter, it'll be a Jerry chant since he always preached to finish strong. It's not going to be holding anything up or anything like that.

so, what happens to the fire after they walk the torch out onto the field? Do we get some kind of torch tripod for the sideline and then blow it out at the end?

Id have somebody take it and run it behind the building on the end opposite the FOC and they can put it out behind there. Then they can prep it for the next home game

This is a really great idea. It would not only be a unique Liberty tradition, it would be a great way to honor Dr. Falwell. Looking many years down the road, it would be a way to let later generations connect to Dr. Falwell and encourage them to learn about the man.

I will take the action to outline the ideas in this thread and send them to Coach Rocco (I need his email address SJ or someone), Jeff Barber and Bob Goode. We will see what happens from there. Those that are resident in the Burg and have access to these guys could help by letting them know you think it is a good idea. Please continue to send ideas, since I will probably not send it until after the funeral next week.

flameshaw:

Great idea with the Flame/torch. How about after the captain leads the team on the field with the torch - he throws it at our opponent when we go out for the coin toss? I would hate to burn the new field turf but that would be an extremely intimidating gesture and I bet it would really get the fans "fired" up.

I'm full of great ideas - just ask.

I wish we had a week. As much of a leader as Super Jon is he could have a thousand names on a petition with no problem.

I really like this idea. Too often a "religious" school can have "theological drift" and this will at least also serve as a constant reminder of Falwell (not sure THAT is realy ever needed) and his goals and beliefs.

At the risk of sounding stupid as people look to put a plan together to give to Barber and Rocco:
CHARACTERISTICS OF A FLAME:

Passion "burns" hot. That's Jerry

"Burning" the candle at both ends. That's Jerry

A 'light" in the world. That's Jerry

Gives "warmth". That's Jerry.....a warm and caring, encouraging guy.

Decribes "movement" or "action". That's Jerry. ...."Church Aflame". "Youth Aflame" "Knowledge Aflame"

Long time lurker, first time poster.....
.
Flameshaw, I LOVE your idea. I bet that Jerry would prefer something like Champions Cauldron....something that points people to LU or Christ rather than himself. I dont know, what do you all think?
.
The Flame would be sure to inspire the crowd and the team though. It would really be something to see.
.
If its not a perpetual flame, you could turn it on 24 hours prior to game time, just to remind everyone that its almost game time (assuming it can be seen from the road).

i think that's an excellent idea tater. similar to putting up a huge sign (SJ's idea) to announce the game, but instead, or in addition, light up this flame a day in advance. that'd be a GREAT way to remind everyone.

"The Champions Cauldron" has a nice ring to it. Gives homage to JF's famous tag line...plus that has an aura of big time collegiate football to it...ND has their Touchdown Jesus and LU can have its Champions Cauldron.

I sincerely hope this thread gets a run in front of the eyes who can give this idea a shot. I get pumped just thinking about it. It seems like a fairly unique way for LU to both build tradition and honor our founder in a very public way. The Champions Cauldron sounds great... at the bottom where passers by can read we can have a large bronze plaque honoring Dr. Falwell and explaining why the Cauldron was established.

If used as described this certainly could become in tradition similar to the orange glow on the tower in TX. I sincerely hope this idea gets a run. I think if they even had Alumni/Students raise the funds you'd get it pretty quick. Something like that is inspiring and if part of the point was that the students/alumni paid for it, it'd be a final fund raiser for the Doc. I'd certainly invest in that.

yeah, when flameshaw said this, i was thinking to myself, "what's the chances that at least two out of three of those men have already read this?!"

With the things that are going on on campus, it's doubtful they have already. They will at some point though.

When I first read the suggested name "Champion's Cauldron" I liked the ring of it, but something wasn't right. I checked the definition.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/cauldron

Clearly what we are talking about would not be a cauldron, which is a pot. The other thing is that the term is associated with witchcraft. I think we can come up with something better.

My wife said someone was going to say that....LOL...
.
From the thesaurus for cauldron, here are the C's ... caisson, can, canister, canteen, capsule, carafe, carton, cask, casket, cauldron, chamber, chest, churn, cistern, cradle, crate, crock

How about the Champions Crock...

If you look at Wiki (I know but it still makes the point), the flame is actually contained in a Cauldron. As for it being witchcraft... I doubt we'll have any confustion when it's sitting 100 feet in the air. It's just a title put on it... we're not going to have someone stirring it with a big wooden stick. It's simply the name for the vessel holding the flame.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Flame#Cauldron

The following is from the wiki link above speaking about the make up of the Olympic flame.

Cauldron

The cauldron and the pedestal it sits on are always the subject of unique and often dramatic design. These also tie in with how the cauldron is lit during the Opening Ceremony.

* In Barcelona in 1992, an archer shot a flaming arrow immediately over the cauldron to light it.

* In Atlanta in 1996, the cauldron was an artistic scroll decorated in red and gold, which some compared to a french fry box from major Olympic sponsor McDonald's and used as an example of the heavy commercialization of those Games. It was lit using a string that travled the flame from the stadium to its final resting place. At the 1996 Summer Paralympics, the scroll was lit by a paraplegic climber hoisting himself up a rope to the cauldron.

* For the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Cathy Freeman walked across water and ignited the cauldron through the water, surrounding herself within a ring of fire.

* In the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, the final torchbearer placed the flame on an arched lighting apparatus, which initiated a series of fireworks before lighting the top of the 57-meter high Olympic Cauldron, the highest in the history of the Olympic Winter Games.

Everything can be used for bad purposes but we don't quit using them or rename them and give evil a foothold. We're communicating to one another on computers and the internet... both used in evil ways by others.... I still call it a computer.
