Smoothie, I got your back on this one... There are plenty of snobbs at UNC and there are plenty of grass smoking cow tippers at VT. I have been to UVA a ton of times and there is just no way that you can compare are buildings to theres. I love what we have here and the direction that we are going in as well..

Quick Hijack in progress. After reading the title of this thread, I thought for sure Brokeback would have posted at least 4 times by now. Sorry, now back to your attempt at trying to compare LU to UVA.

Re: LU's library...

First of all, libraries are expensive. Unbelievably so. Other schools have had the luxury of time to build their libraries. This benefits them both in the collection of materials as well as having more funds over time. Our library has had neither of those things to benefit from, thus far.

Secondly, other schools were started in an era where the paper book was king of academics. LU was started just before the information revolution, which has moved us into the digital world. There's a reason LU subscribes to so many electronic academic journal, notebook and book searches. They aren't cheap. Digital information is the future. There's a reason Google is spending huge piles of cash to digitize nearly every library book that can. Information will move more and more toward the digital domain, there's little point in trying to fight that by building a paper library.

Finally, there's also a reason we have a wonderful inter-library loan program. Few know about it and even fewer make good use of it. Just because our library is small doesn't mean we don't have access to the same materials.

nice stuff nick! that made me laugh. anyway i have no problems with the transfers, especially if a player left a school's program like a kent hicks or a chris johnson sat out then transferred. i did not like the pinigis situation b/c of how it has effected UVA, and how it seemed like since he lost his job, and transferred....a sour grapes situation. and if groh and rocco are cool its not big deal which it seems to be.

Perhaps when the Hoos get a coach who the players like being around then the mass transfers will slow down. 8)

Couldn't that same line also be a true reference to Hanky & RD?

ATrain wrote:And the big rumor regarding the reason for that: the upper floors can't hold that much dead weight. Thats also why the bookstore couldn't go upstairs either (and thats coming from the manager when I worked there). Of course, others on this board claim it can, but that is the prevailing rumor around campus.
That rumor is not true...it got started a long time ago. While working with building services this past summer I found out that none of the rumors about demoss are true...the truth is there was money set aside for the thrid and forth floor of demoss, then campus north happend and that money was redesinated towards making campus north usable...there are some tentative plans in the future for the use of the thrid and forth floor...but who knows how long that will go on...I think they do have a 10 year plan in place, at least that was the talk this summer...

Thanks, posty. Those rumors started almost immediately after the structure went up and they're wildly untrue. It turns out the the pointman at Banker Steel that provided most of the girding is a friend of mine and when I mentioned the rumor to him, he looked at me like I was smoking crack. He said he couldn't vouch for the concrete (which was provided by SR Lloyd's dad's company, BTW) but that the steel was more than sufficient for what we needed. If it weren't, it wouldn't have passed inspection and Banker would have been civilly liable and, potentially, criminally liable. Incidentally, right now, Banker is the primary steel provider for the substructure of the Freedom Tower in NYC.

Back to football!!

I would like to see them go back and retrofit the interior of it with a more aesthetic, more upscale look (a la wood trim, wood accents, or just lack of hospital-esque motif) once they reach the 25K goal and the endowment goal.

hospital-esque motif
That's one way of looking at it; others say the inside of DeMoss looks more like a battleship or a submarine.

I've always compared it to an oversized high school
