I do not believe this is on JB. He has done everything he can to provide Liberty athletics with the most success possible. Taking a step back and speaking objectively, JB isn't the issue.

Money doesn't equal success but it does equal expectations of success.
Now that is true

I agree with you, and I'm a big fan of Jeff. However, when you take a step back and look at the entire university objectively, you see concern.

Which is what I've been saying. I realize just because you spend the money it doesn't mean you're going to win. If that was the case the Yankees would win championships every year. But when you spend so much more than your competition you expect to have consistent success at a high level. That's isn't happening. We can't even show up for the biggest game of the year.

Jeff needs to clean house and that includes a few other sports. Since he fired Toman he better fire Gill. All the money that the school has and building all these nice facilities they shouldn't be average and that's not just for football.

fun fact Liberty could've had Scott Satterfield who actually interviewed for the job but nope went with with an average coach who happens to be a big name. oops

According to tax documents, the base salary of Big South football coaches other than Turner Gill can be no more than $730k combined.

Gill's base contract is $638k.

Our coordinators make more than every head coach in our league.

Would you guys be happy with where we're at if he took a pay cut?

Not at all. However, it wouldn't be nearly the failure it's been had we not invested so much money in it. Still would've been a failure, just not as extreme.

No way he's taking a pay cut. So seems kind of pointless to entertain.

It seems there is agreement that his time needs to be over. The question is, who has the "Liberty Character" that Gill brought but has the winning formula? Do we get a recruiter that can make us win in the trenches with the big boys? Would we rather win by sheer force of a defense?

My eye is on Mike London at Maryland. Assistant Head Coach (Not HC in Waiting) making 300k per year. Halfway through a two year contract. He fits the mold of LU and brings a lot to the table. He also already has a strong relationship with VA high schools.

Calling Jeff Barber an idiot is crossing the line. JB has done some magnificent things for the university and has made some great hires. Yes, he's missed some....but so has literally every person that's ever taken a risk in their life. I'll never fault him for taking a risk...that's the only way you have success in sports.

With that said, the one area that I think needs improving is how we handle contracts. Layer should have never been offered an extension after the basketball tournament. We also shouldn't have paid an unproven coach $638k. This is one area where JB absolutely needs to improve.

Lastly, understand that with Gill's salary come certain expectations. I know no one likes to see a person get fired but collegiate coaching has high turnover for a reason. If you're going to make this kind of money, you had better prove that you're worth it. Almost every coach is 4-6 bad weeks away from getting canned...Gill shouldn't be an exception.

On this we agree. His history of disorganization and horrible clock management are well documented

You realize he did the same thing at Richmond that Gill did here, right? Riding the coattails of the previous coach.

I was making a point to mentally take money out of the equation. Admittedly in a thread about money. But I for one am unhappy with our standing in FCS even if our staff were made up of volunteers

It would be interesting to know how much, if any, autonomy JB has when it comes to hiring and contracts. Junior has been known to meddle.
