Both. Often times, we get suckered into talented players...even though we should be spending time, money and scholarships somewhere else. It's like when the wife sends you to the store for milk and bread, but instead you bring home a broom that was half off...nice broom...but we needed milk and bread.
When judging coaching, I don't really care about playcalling or time management. A lot of that stuff is pretty arbitrary and no one in Vegas pays attention to it when setting a line. However, I do pay attention to gameplans. Our gameplan seems to vary little from game to game. Wear out the defensive line, try to draw the LB's in and then hit them with a big play. That's a fine strategy but it only works if you have a great line, and capable running backs. Against JSU, we were completely outmatched at the LOS. We weren't ever going to wear them out and even when we drew their coverage in, their CB's were good enough to go man and still stop us.
I don't claim to be an expert or anything, but I don't understand how one looks at Jacksonville State and concludes that our best option is to run up the middle 20 times. We had the ball for 30 minutes and couldn't generate 200 yards of offense? It just doesn't feel like it's a sophisticated offense.
