This is the issue. We roll up to games thinking we're going to win because we're Liberty. Then we get smacked in the mouth and before we know it, we're down three scores and having to battle back. This would've been SIU all over again had Gardner-Webb been half decent.

While this is both on the coaches and the players, it's ultimately a culture issue and culture is created by the coaches.

We have these types of games every year. Last year it was Chuck South. If we win out and beat Coastal we are in. I can see us winning out. We just have to stay healthy. I ain't ready to give up yet.

jinxy wrote:I'be been hard on josh but I think he's down the blame list on this one. I put the most blame on coaching staff then Lunsford. Our special teams play is absolute trash and has been. We need a DRASTIC overhaul on special teams. Wimbo was horrible in the first half and Stamn was horrible in the second half. Then you have Peter dropping a wide open td after hearing him run his mouth about how he can't be stopped....right just leave him wide open. Lunsford should not get another attempt inside the 40 in his career. He's an absolute train wreck and I put more blame on the staff for calling plays like he's automatic. We keep playing for field goals and it has burbed us multiple time's. I don't think we beat csu and this looking like a lost season.
They did score a Special Teams TD.
I place direct blame on a kicker who has apparently been reading his own press clippings (and based on history who knows what else he's been doing) and the Humpty Dumpty return guy

We do. And that's why we haven't turned the corner. And that's why we're typical liberty. And that's why we will always be a bottom of the top 25 team.

Flames Nation needs to show Charleston Southern a little love in the power rankings this week. Coastal looked pretty bad today and they were at home on their ugly teal field.

I'll keep my comments here limited for the next few days but you do raise an interesting point Jon...that said, I think we are oftentimes a victim of our own success. Remember in 2009 the run we had where we basically destroyed everyone in our path? We came into the SBU game needing a win to clinch the conference and a playoff berth. We lose a much closer than expected game, miss out on the playoffs and our drought goes on another year. We came off a big win over Montana and got whomped by SIU. We came off an FBS win last week and get down 27-7 even though we didn't really turn the ball over much, but could not stop the G-W offense, which up to this game had only scored more than 20 points one time and was anemic at best.

We certainly can't go into stadiums and just blast everybody by 4 TDs...at least not now. We have to go in with a sense of urgency every week. Its like I said in another discussion, we need to treat every week like a 1 game season.

What I find absolutely mind boggling is that people are defending this putrid excuse for a performance. Jerry senior used to always say "if it's Christian it ought to be better." Well we screwed the pooch on that one this season. How does this keep happening? Can we please just win the games we are supposed to and not show up and expect our opponent to just roll over? Is that too much to ask? Even if we win out(which I highly doubt) there is no excuse for this type of performance. I'm going to bed maybe I'll change my tune with some sleep. Not likely though...

Our playoff path is clear now. There will be no at-large. GW needs to loose to CCU and Chuck South. We win out.

Josh said postgame they underestimated GWU.

Josh said after SIU they were "nonchalant" during practice during the week.

This isn't me just making up stuff. They don't take every game seriously.

Were the game plans flawed? I would agree that the D looked a little lost with a dual threat QB in the 1st half. But in the 2nd made the necessary adjustments.
How are 3 missed field goals on the coaches?
How are dropped passes on the coaches?
A kick returner who prefers to fall down as opposed to run could be on the coaching staff. But they did get a PR TD. So....
'Getting your team fired up'? A coach can only do so much.
Specifically WHAT is on the coaching staff?

It's sickening. Where's the heart? Where's the killer instinct? You get 11 chances in the fall to dominate. Go out there full throttle every freaking week and be the best you can freaking be. Think about what we could be, top 5 ranking, fcs power, national champion.

Who is 'they'? I mean golly gee Josh, you are the Senior Captain, what are YOU doing to up the intensity?
Coaches can only yell and scream so much.

I heard the interview too and Josh will probably get in trouble for it but I think he's been much better the last 2 weeks. The overlooking opponents has been around since rocco. Honestly it has to be an athletic department and entitlement issue because of all the nice gear and facilities. We think we just have to show up and these scrubs like gardner Webb and presby will roll over. The mind boggling part is how many times do we have to get bit before we change.

Not adjusting to a field goal kicker who was 7/12 coming into the game.
Purple Haize wrote:How are dropped passes on the coaches?
It's been a problem for three years. At some point, the guys getting paid a bunch of money are responsible when their players continue to make the same mistakes.
Purple Haize wrote:A kick returner who prefers to fall down as opposed to run could be on the coaching staff.
Again, it's been going on for three years. Parker has has one great return and 2.5 years of bad decisions.

At what point do trends that happen every single week begin to get blamed on the people leading the program?

The necessary adjustments were not made. We lost.
Purple Haize wrote:How are 3 missed field goals on the coaches?
How about actually coaching Lunsford and not letting him slide? This has been a chronic problem that has never been addressed.
Purple Haize wrote:How are dropped passes on the coaches?
How about actually coaching Peterson and not letting him slide? This has been known for years, just like Lunsford.
Purple Haize wrote:A kick returner who prefers to fall down as opposed to run could be on the coaching staff. But they did get a PR TD. So....
I agree. Parker was at fault in that situation.
Purple Haize wrote:'Getting your team fired up'? A coach can only do so much.
Right. And ours aren't doing even the tiny bit that can be done. Senior leadership is nonexistent. Coaching leadership is nonexistent.

I can take losses. I can't take blowout losses.

Quit making excuses for the coaches, including the head coach who makes more that GWU's entire staff.

IMVVVHO:
Making the defensive adjustments too late.
Taking too long to figure out we were not going to be able to run the ball.
Should have gone for it 4th and 12 on the next to last possession. The FG does you no good, even if you make it. If you don't, there is no difference in field position.
I would have played Masha a bit more and a bit earlier.

But bottom line, we were just out played in every facet of the game. GW deserved to win this one for sure. The players who are supposed to make the big plays, just didn't make them. Bad performance by the entire team, staff, etc. TFL.

It's both. At this point you're just questioning things to be a detractor and try to be smarter than everyone. I know you coached a thousand years ago so you want to stand up for coaches, but at the end of the day, the coaches are responsible for everything whether the players executed or not.

Has a mind set been created now, that they are better than being in the Big South and deserve to be FBS, so they look at the Big South as being beneath them?

I honestly couldn't tell you jinxy...Im one of the biggest kool-aid drinkers on here but seeing results like this makes me shake my head every time it happens because I (and everybody else on here no doubt) KNOW that we can be better. I KNOW we can be a top 5 team. I KNOW we can be a major player at the FCS level (and beyond if we ever get to that bridge)...but we play down to the lesser opponents, and don't take them seriously, which bites us in the butt (whether we win or lose) and then when our backs are against the wall in a game we aren't favored in, we rise to the occasion and exceed expectations and come up with a win.

Anyway, this can't continue if we are going to make that next step. Now, that said, I'm not going to declare this season over (unlike some) by any stretch of the imagination. We have 5 games left. We are going to need to be huge fans of whoever plays GWU the rest of the season (and CSU and CCU for that matter), but we cannot pull up stakes right now. We take a trip up to NJ next week where we need to win and win convincingly, and then we have some serious film study to do to prepare for KSU on homecoming night.
