Teams do get love because of what they done in the past. Look at Notre Dame. They "won one for the Gipper" years ago, and pollsters are still rewarding them for it, not to mention the love the NCAA gives ND.

Seriously? Last year when we got beat by CSU - who was ranked in the top 20 at the time - we plummeted down in both major polls by 6 spots. The very next week, when CSU got beat by UNRANKED (not even in the "others receiving votes" section) GDubb - they only dropped 4 spots. Pollsters, especially ones like Craig Haley (who IMO is the biggest FCS "journalist" troll since Dave Coulson), love to drop us in their rankings when a player of ours so much as breathes improperly.

We are admittedly riding a wave of success from last season, but not too much, since we're still ranked behind Montana in both major polls right now. But saying we "get a lot of love" from national pollsters just isn't true.

Lang pretty much hit the nail on the head, though - we might be a top 10 team, we might not be. It's a little early to tell for sure, as we've had one fairly good game against a mediocre opponent and one really bad game against a severely underrated opponent. This Saturday should be a little more of a measuring stick for where we're at - if we can't take SCSU behind the woodshed after Clemson held them to 44 yards of total offense last weekend, we may have to start wondering if we're really as good as we thought we'd be. :D

EIU didn't play two FBS teams. They got blown out at Minnesota and then at home against Southern Illinois last week. They definitely aren't being ranked on this season's merits.

Don't worry, Coastal will be ahead of Montana after they get blasted in Fargo.

Yeah you are correct. I was thinking they played NIU last week which is in the MAC.

C4CFlame17, how would you rate the OVC this season? Based on everything that I have read and seen, I think that overall they are going to take a big step backward from last season. Things are looking pretty good for the EKU Colonels this season.

It's still to early I think.

Jacksonville State is the early season favorite and had a big win Saturday vs Chattanooga.

EKU, IMO, has had an easy schedule. Our first true test will be next week at UT-Martin. If they win that game I see EKU being 5-0 vs EIU in Richmond, KY.

EIU has underperformed this season and it will be interesting to see how they perform this week at Illinois State. I'd say it is a must win for the Panthers if they want any shot at an at-large bid.

TSU is overrated if you ask me. In their only true game so far they lost to Alabama State on the road. I think they will struggle once OVC season starts. Their advantage is they get to play 1 less OVC game because of a ludicrous deal made with the OVC so they can play more SWAC teams.

Those are the 4 teams ranked in the OVC right now. Honestly I think only two teams will make the playoffs from the OVC. We will see how it pans out.

I agree. You most certain know more about that conference than I do and that meshes well with what I have been seeing from the outside looking in.

I wonder if that coaches poll only has updated records but not the new rankings. There is no way that Sam is still ranked 15th after getting run out of their own crib by a D2 school this Saturday.

Yeah, you're right. It looks like they just added the week, but updated nothing else.

To be fair to SHSU, CSU-Pueblo was the #2 D-II team in the country. They would have done the exact same thing to us.

I doubt it. I had friends at the game. They claim the team looks completely lost under KC Keeler. He is continuing his FBS transfers by the boatload philosophy that got him run out of Delaware.

They are definitely correct on both points about SHSU and KC Keeler.

But the top 5-10 D-II teams are no joke; they aren't Brevard. If we were unfortunate enough to play one of them, a loss would be more likely than not, especially against one like this team.

ACU was one of them just a couple seasons ago and now look at what they are doing in the FCS. North Alabama and several others in the Big South footprint would compete right away if they moved up.

SHSU lost to a D2 by 26 points and they are still in the top 25. Unreal. Maybe the issue is the pollsters didn't even realize they lost? lol.

Frankly losing to a D2 (like Sam Houston) or a weak D1 (like Furman), you should be dropped from any and every poll
