I'm still skeptical of the coaching staff, but they did make the proper adjustments to win the game. That's progress.

It's important to keep in mind, this is the guy that's name was all over the Auburn job a few years back, he'd be stupid not to jump from here to a job like that if he gets offered one.Bigsouthking wrote:My school doesn't have football, but we do have Ruth Chris on campus...You may have the trump card on the Ruth's Chris
It wouldn't surprise me won bit if LU wins the conference and then Gill-Ville takes off for greener pastures.... Now that would be comical.
I hope if Gill does leave for greener pastures he leaves the program in better shape then he found it.

I'm glad he's here, I support him while he's here, but I won't be naive in thinking he will be here 5-10 years from now. Hopefully he will get us some wins over the next few years, gets us in the playoffs, and sees us into our FBS transition. He stays during this transition period for us, I'll be a happy camper. I think we just need to enjoy the ride while it lasts and hope he can point us in the right direction while he's here.

In a "rebuilding season" they have kept us in every game but one. IM sure there will be some tweaks from year to year. But overall I think we have the right coaches for LU ..... I really liked Gill's closing line in his GW post game radio interview.
bluedevilflame wrote:While I wish the best for LU IMHO to have a HC that is with the team for only a couple/few years is a bad hire from an employer perspective; but I also know often times it is unavoidable. I get a little "frosted" when coaches do this. All is does, in reality, is harm the football program and the athletes/players. When a new HC comes in they, for some reason, have to make a statement of getting "their" recruits in to be successful. All of the 63+ scholarship players at LU are either All-Conference/All-State and many also have National rankings. If a Coach "can't" coach athletes with those type credentials regardless of what type offense/defensive schemes they use is ridiculous.SumItUp wrote:You know what, I would like nothing more than for Gill to stay if he builds a successful program. Here's my thought process behind that post, I took the LU blinders off when I looked at the overall prestige of our coaching job currently. While we have aspirations of FBS and seem to be printing money lately, we aren't there yet. Our commitment is there, the money is there, and the facilities are getting there, but for right now, we are still FCS, still in a low level conference, and still have no playoff appearance/national titles. We also have a small media market with little to no national TV audience for our sports other than ESPN 3 nationally, MASN regionally. Sure you can say Gill came here because we aspire to move to FBS, but that's not guaranteed and if/when it does happen, who knows when. I will get flamed (no pun intended) for this but Gill took a big step down when he came to us, he probably could have gotten a few coordinator offers here or there in FBS, which depending on the job, could be better than an FCS head coach position but I think he wanted to remain at the head of a program, FCS or FBS. After understanding all of these current factors, to me, it is only logical to think that Gill is here to rebuild his reputation and to gain back the confidence teams had in him a few years ago so he can launch himself back in the FBS head coach hunt.
Look at his last few years at KU. KU is a hard job for anybody, but look at the records, they went from Mangino winning a BCS bowl one year, going 13-12 the next two years, down to 5-19 Gill's two seasons. His reputation that was built at Buffalo was destroyed in 2 short seasons. I'm sure at the time he was fired he had little options at the FBS level and had to look elsewhere. In steps LU, in need of a "name" head coach to move the team in the future and get our name out there for conference realignment purposes. Here's a school wanting to be big time, here's a coach that wants to get back to being big time. Win win all around for both parties.
All I'm trying to say is, Gill is the right coach at the right time for Liberty. He starts winning here, he'll get back into the coaching carousel and off he will go. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am. All I hope for the Gill era here at Liberty is like I said in the other post, get us to the playoffs, win some conference titles, maybe a national title, and see us through our transition to FBS. I wish him well when he does leave and look forward to seeing what mark he leaves on our program.
Purple Haize wrote:Your business to football analogy is woefully inaccurate. Does the success or failure of a Fortune 500 company depend on a bunch of people aged 18-22? You will not see any career ending carpal tunnel syndrome injuries effect a Fortune 500 Company. You won't have a bunch of Fortune 500 employees leave in one year only to be replaced by just newly graduated hires.Agreed in concept; however I don't believe the successful measurement of a HC, or for that matter the Assistants should be given a "hall pass" because they lack or don't have any of their "hand picked" recruits installed. In other words there are posts and beliefs from folks who feels that a HC should get this hall pass until their recruits are in place over a period of several years before being measured as a successful coaching hire.
You will have a bunch of accountants and sales people and administrators used to doing things one way only to have difficulty or finding it impossible to work in an environment created by a new CEO. So that's at leat close
LYNCHBURG, Va. (BP) -- Turner Gill has endured plenty of challenges in his life. But this current test is a real humdinger.
The 50-year-old Gill, who is still a legend on the Nebraskan plains for his exploits as a Cornhusker, is now trying to rewrite history some 1,200 miles east of Lincoln in Lynchburg, Va. As Liberty University's first-year head football coach, he has assumed the vanguard of the school's five-decade quest for national football relevancy.
"We're here to teach people about glorifying Christ and be conference champions and national champions," said Gill, whose team is off to a rocky 1-4 start as it travels to face Presbyterian (S.C.) College on Oct. 13. "The vision is clear. That's why it fit me. I'm excited about that."
