They're not all die hard fans but the excuse for leaving early in the past was that "oh it's a blow out, you can't expect them to sit through a blow out" and I bought that. Now we're making excuses about the rot closing and Tilley being open? Let's just call a spade a spade. Our students sucked today and this showed they definitely weren't there for the football game. They want a big time team and big time facilities but they're not willing to be big time fans.

KBM, You are a great example of a great Fan of the school you go to. I immediately began going to a ton LU sports when I came to school and cheering for all the teams like crazy. I was still a huge UNC fan, but LU came first and still does. I have no clue why so many people are in the stands each week with gear for other schools. Be true to your school. You can cheer for a thousand teams for all I care, but your school should always be #1.

Even in the beginning of the game they weren't very loud. I bragged last week to everyone how loud and great they were (while they were still there) and this week proved to be a joke...

By the way I didn't take any pictures but my wife took a bunch. She's loading them up as we speak :)

Oh, so you can call a spade a spade and talk crap about 1000 girls who don't know what a first down is for leaving the game, but I can't call a spade a spade and say what I feel about the team and the coaching without being called a bad fan who throws the team under the bus?

Got it, Jon. Geeze, I once was lost, but now I'm found.

I'd bet most of the fans who left don't care about having a big time team or facilities. They might "think it's cool" if it happened, but they don't really have a passion for it. So they don't care to stay.

YOU'RE the one who wants us to be big time. So you slam the fans when they don't act how you want.

Take, for example, Eastern Washington.

They have 8,000+ undergrads. They set a record this season for student section attendance with about 3,000. (don't remember the exact number). They couldn't get half their undergrads out for a game on a RED FIELD against the dynasty of Western FCS football (Montana). They get in free, too, with their student ID.

We have 11k undergrads or whatever, and we regularly get more than half to the game. Even if a good number leave, I'd say we're doing just fine.

Or the sky is falling, either way.

Edit:
3,105 was the record student attendance (The opening of the red field). They have 8,500 undergrads.

I think it takes awhile to become big time.

I've been going faithfully to LU football games since 1996. I've probably missed a total of 10-12 games in 14 years.

I remember when we'd have 6,000 fans show up...and by the end of the game about 3,000.

It is getting better.

Look, last week JMU played an early game against Delaware and had less fans than we had for Savanah state that night.

But I was sad that the students left early. I was also sad that our cheerleaders did a T-shirt toss when LU had the ball on offense and forced us to call a timeout b/c our own crowd was making to much noise.

They should ALWAYS do t-shirt tosses when we're on Defense, not offense.

P.S. Nothing against the cheerleaders or anything like that. I appreciate their effort at the games.

Just throw the shirts out when we're on Defense. Maybe particulary when we need the crowd to get loud :)

Yeah even at the first game I'm pretty sure the loudest the student section ever got was when they tossed out T-shirts  looking forward to when that is not the case.

yeah but they are a different situation. Their main competition is Wazzu, unlike the stupid amount of fcs teams we have in virginia and FBS teams within 5 hours.

okay. today seemed off. from the beginning today seemed like there just wasn't as much hype or excitement as usual in the stadium. while my dorm had lots of fun yelling at the kickers Andy and john (18 and 30 for csu) from the rail, it just seemed like no one was as into the game at the very beginning as we are in most other games. we had fun being on tv a ton, and yelling at people,
but something felt like it was missing today for sure.

i stayed almost the whole game. i left within the last minute of the 4th quarter.
and im from delaware. almost no one cares about college sports. and UD never appealed to me. i had no college team till i came here. i love our team. the flames are my one and only college team. i wish everyone else felt the same way.

and i really want to catch a free t-shirt. like really. it. is. a. FREE! t-shirt.
free stuff. we are in college. we like free things.
but yeah, today was not the best game for us (the students) in awhile.

Thanks for the pics, ladyflame. BTW great camera.

First off, the stadium was every bit as good as advertised. But I think we have beaten that topic to death the past week. Suffice it to say that Mrs. Sly and my kids were every bit as blown away as I was.

As for the student section, it was a major disappointment. I passed by some of them at halftime when I had to go get a camera battery from my car. And a bunch were bragging about how they stood out by wearing white. I mean they were actually bragging about it. But I digress. Perhaps this game was played up enough after the thrill of the stadium debut. But by my estimates, it was the poor student showing that caused the dip in attendance from last week. The lower section of the baptist side and the north end of the upper deck were packed. We sat on the south end of the upper deck near SJ & CJ and while there was available seating, it was fairly well represented. The students simply did not pull their weight. Whether that is over the 'Rot issue or whether they were simply not informed of the magnitude of what was transpiring on the field is yet to be determined. I would certainly expect more out of them moving forward. And for the record, the shade on the Baptist side was extremely nice on a warm day.

As for the game itself, I love FlamerBob's ideas in regard to Matt Bevins. His confidence is clearly shaken. He seems like a completely different kicker not only field goal attempts but kickoffs as well. He seemed tentative on his boot that bonked off the right upright. Hopefully he turns the corner soon because we will need him at some point the rest of the way.

Offensively, SirChauncey showed me some spark today that I hadn't seen from him since last season. Perhaps it was because CSU was playing back to defend the deep threat by Chauncey had a great vision finding seams today.

Mike clearly was not very sharp today. All three of his INTs were simply bad passes. I realize that he is still relatively inexperienced as a QB but he needs to make better decisions at times. But I will say Mike looked terrific running the ball at times today. He seemed like the old Mike.

I laugh hearing every complain about the multiple fades to Chris. Is that not exactly what nearly everyone on here has been calling for the past few weeks. Give credit to CSU for making it difficult. And yes, Chris was pushing off quite a bit. But if the refs are willing to let you play, he would be silly not to do it.

Defensively I was pleased to see us keep the Bucs in check most of the day. Toscano was giving us fits with his feet before his injury. But I give credit to Coach Clark for adjusting his schemes when the backup QB came into the game. The kid never really found his rhythm and we really stopped the run fairly well.

It was great to be back in Williams Stadium. I wish I could have chatted with more of you before, during & after the game. But thanks to those who shared their burgers & dogs with my family. And it should be noted that between SumItUp's crew and the Sly Fox clan, there are kids who are growing up dreaming of coming to LU.

I was told a mess of them went and sat in the upper deck on the other side to get out of the sun.
I was in the 2nd deck the whole time. No one was added (at least in or around section 203). Poor attendance for a homecoming game. Poor form by the alumni.

My comments about MB still stand from the pre-season. We won, he is our best QB, but he is not a spectacular passer. O-line is middling, Special Teams is terrible, and the defense is leaky as always and on the point of breaking.

I am sorry we alumni are being labeled as showing "poor form" based on our criticisms in this thread. We have endured constant criticism (generally well-founded) on the Baptist side for years. So when the students drop the ball it would seem to be appropriate subject matter. But I can see how the gripes & frustrations of today could be perceived as such by students. Frankly we have reached a point in the program where the bar has been raised. By all indications last Saturday it was cleared easily ... today it was nowhere near as high. Hopefully the prodding encourages the student body to step up its game. But that's enough lame sports analogies for one post.

BTW here is the recap from the SIDs ...

SirChauncey Holloway recorded his first career receiving touchdown against Charleston Southern, helping the Flames to a 44-20 Homecoming victory on Saturday.

Reigning Big South Offensive Player of the Year Mike Brown made a push to retain the title Saturday afternoon, as the junior was responsible for five of Liberty's six touchdowns. The play of the quarterback helped No. 24 Liberty open up conference play with a 44-20 victory over Charleston Southern in front of a Homecoming crowd of 18,587 fans.

it was a poor turnout by students and the alumni number had to be lower than last year. maybe HMO will have some figures to share. each group of fans has some blame to bear so can we quit the the name calling and the other crap? the atmosphere was dead inside williams today. tailgating was excellent though. in regards to the game, i thought the D played well except for 3rd down situations, the kicking game is just awful...bevins is clearly struggling so maybe you use shipps for a game and maybe bevins will wake up?? who knows. i am baffled at streeter's play calling. i know summers is a beast but maybe more throws to pat kelly or ervin garner? it is simply tough to put a finger on this team because i left the stadium not feeling good about a 24 point win.lets go beat VMI next week!! GO FLAMES!
