I saw this play earlier in the season (can't remember the game), and the ref explained it better in that game...if the player calls for a fair catch, he's given the right not to be interfered with, even if he muffs the ball, until it hits the ground. So the CSU player has to be allowed a chance to regain possession of the ball before it hits the ground before an LU guy can go after it (or hit him)...so since the ball never hit the ground before the LU guy grabbed it, it's a penalty. Kind of a fluky rule, but I've seen it called before.
