JDUB wrote:That rule is ridiculous. Mack Thomas is the fire marshall that wouldn't let us shoot of the fireworks later. We had no choice but to do it during the game. I'm pretty sure they've made exceptions before, at least at city stadium but not 100% sure. I don't see how shooting them off at 10:30 on a saturday could be any worse than 10 oclock. The city just does whatever they can to cause drama with us, its ridiculous.

With that said, I thought the fireworks were possibly the best I've ever seen. They went on for ever and ever and were pretty good. We scored 2 TDs during them ha!

We've never gotten an exception after the 10pm rule was put in place that I'm aware of....we plan ahead though and start games with fireworks at 6pm :P

There was one game that went into extra innings this year and we had to set some off in between innings. I was surprised that they didnt do them at half time knowing that the first half was as long as it was, and the fact its practically impossible to play a televised game in 2:45. The average length of a televised football game is 3.5 or so.....so I wouldnt have thought the 10pm deadline would have surprised anyone. I would be interested to hear the coach's thought or even KK's thoughts on them, if it was a close game I imagine there would have been some flack. I missed a lot of it though watching the game...from what I saw it was good.

PS. Councilman Helgeson was at the game, he was the sole reason behind the ordinance...I am quite certain if he was asked to speak to the fire marshal then an exception probably would have been granted. Simply because everyone on city payroll knows it's his ordinance and the FM has received personal calls/emails anytime it's cut close, only from him....so if he doesnt care then nobody will.

thanks for explaining HMO. It is good to see someone who has dealt with the city on this issue to given a better report. well on to the game. i thought we played well offensively, mike brown and chris summers were excellent as susal. the running game picked up a bit albeit against a poor team, and the defense was ok....still not impressed with our pass defense whatsoever, and our special teams was just awful. i do not know if anyone saw it but rocco really got on bevins when he missed the FG that was not blocked. but the stats tell a lot. overall we beat savannah state like we should have. A great crowd. when i drove onto campus and saw students tailgating on campus east and then over by the bookstore, it really felt like a big school atmosphere. now its time for homecoming! GO FLAMES!!!...and of course always good to see the medic as he made a special guest appearance.

I was really dissapointed in how we played. We started the first quarter great then we kind of got stagnant. Like most of you said, we need to bring it next week or we will lose. CSU is a dangerous team and can beat us if we let them hang around.

SSU is horrendous and they moved the ball in 7 yard chunks at will. We stopped them bc we have superior athletes. That's it. Special teams suck. Matt Bevins...what happened to him? We might need field goals at some point this season. IMO, last season's team was much better from what I've seen so far.

Stadium was awesome. Student side really brought it. Chris Summers is a man playing with children.
I don't think I'd classify last night's defense as awful. The defense only allowed one TD. I'm wondering how much motivation a defense can have playing such a terrible team? The score was 21-7 in the first quarter and by halftime it was over. Bend, but don't break? maybe? Was the first team defense in all night?

I TOTALLY agree with you that the stadium is awesome! I'm not sure who said it was quiet, but I felt like it was the loudest I've ever heard it in there. Especially during the pregame chant w/ the guy in the red coat. Although the numbers indicate a sold out crowd, there were a number of empty blue seats on the first level. Tailgating atmosphere was great also. I've never seen so many people tailgating before a game before :)

While I'm not going to say our defense played great today, its ridiculous to be firing a d-coordinator the week after his D kept us in a game against a much better opponent. His D gave up 7 pts last night and you want to fire him??? Like I said I saw room to improve but you don't can a guy given those facts. When has a mid-season firing worked out anyways?

Yeah our special teams where hit or miss. Our kick off return game obviously scared them after that first one but they need to do some work on every other aspect of special teams. For me the jury is still out as we haven't even started BS play.

Completely agree, about the defense and special teams. Somethign cleary needs to be done with special teams. There are ridiculous lapses in judgmetn and execution on almost every down. We get a holding call that negates a TD on the first play, blocked FG's and punts with that stupid formation with the 3 guards that are just too close to the punter. As far as the defense goes, nothing has changed the secondary bites on any kind of a fake end around flee flicker etc. They take a step up and the receiver gets behind them. It's good for 2 to 3 big plays against us every game. I would agree that something needs to be done with the defense because the talent level of the players we have on D is better than the results so either schematically something is wrong or there is poor coaching to ensure that fundamentals are executed. As fara s stopping JMU's offense, lets get real, there offense is not very good. They are a conservative run based passing challenged offense and we had the typical busted coverage play for their only TD that game.

Couple other observations, Bah goes down the field on special teams like a man shot of out of a cannon. He is the first one down the field and i think he was the guy that got the roughing the kicker penalty last week because he blew up JMU"s blocker so bad that he went into the kicker. That guy might be the answer to our short yardage situations and lack of ability to run ont he goaline. I think we need to work on a power formation with gagliardi blocking for him to pick up those goaline runs and 3rd and 2 plays.

It's funny watching our offense, its like they know they can use Summers whenever necessary but we always wait to when we need a bailout play after the other BS we try to run doesn't work.

Finally, if we dont play more consistent I guarantee that we will drop one of the BS conference games again.

The question is was it really necessary for Jr. to say "The Fire Marshall in his infinite wisdom..." I feel like we need to do what we can to respect these guys and try to get them on our side.

Something to the extent of "the city fire marshal in his infinite wisdom would not let us launch the fireworks after the game as we had planned...sorry for the inconvenience"

Maybe they should send everyone a text update using the emergency texting system telling them to go vote the fire marshal out of office.

... also Seth Curry.

I am very ticked. I had always in the past removed them, but had duty at Fort Pickett on Saturday and drove back like a mad man just to make it to the game at all. As I was already running late, I left them on hoping they would be alright, but when I got back, one was gone.

I parked on the road in front of Docs facing toward the tunnel. I'll replace it, but the $15 or so dollars lost is irritating, as well as the fact that I will never again leave them on once I leave the car. My judgment told me not to leave them on as I had always removed them in the past and it came back to haunt me.

I guess the silver lining is that the jerk didn't take them all. I had one on each of the four doors. I may write "Thou shalt Not Steal" on the backs of the remaining ones.

Thanks for the kind offer HMO, but it was the Flames logo one that they sell at the campus bookstore.

I HATE Ft Pickett with a passion. There is absolutely nothing to do during down time. What do you do up there? I got drill up there the 15-17th. ick.

Yeah, I mean it's not like we have new construction going on every other month that needs to be inspected for fire safety regulations or anything like that...

I'd get a little chuckle if he inspected a building we spent millions on to expand classrooms or dorms or something and said "In my infinite wisdom, I declare this building unfit for housing more than 3 people at a time."
