Okay, I don't want to sound like Debbie Downer, but let's look at this a little more from the standpoint of it happening.

Say we start at Demoss. By starting there, they pass two areas where the general public can tailgate and a Flames Club lot. Those two areas where the general public can tailgate are normally places that only students tailgate. As we continue to grow and tailgating begins to get bigger and bigger, the general public, aka the majority of this board, will begin tailgating at Lahaye and on East. If we were to do this type of walk, you guys would have to leave your tailgate and walk to the stadium to see it.

It's a good idea and would be cool, but for the majority of the people coming to a Liberty game, it would be a major inconvenience for them.

OK, I can understand the reservations about making a public show of lighting the torch at Doc's grave, but at the same time, I'm picturing someone lighting it with the same bic lighter they use to fire up their charcoal for their tailgate or one of those sparkers welders use to start their torch, and it just doesn't seem right.

The flame at Doc's grave is there and it just seems like the natural source to light this (hypothetical) torch. Maybe it could be done quietly, early on the morning of the game and taken to the starting point, where they could mount it on some sort of foundation and people would be designated to watch it til time to start the walk. It could be made known that the lighting of the torch was a private thing, and bystanders would be discouraged.

I think all of us respected Jerry but I am a little uncomfortable with the hero worship. Lets not make him the center of our world. I think even he would be uncomfortable with that. Just like his faith was bigger than just him I think he would agree that LU and Thomas Road are bigger than him too. Let's not make him a little jesus. He was just a man used by God to do great things.

Just my two cents...

I agree with everything you just typed. IMHO, the symbolism of the flame is totally seperate from Dr. Falwell. If the idea of lighting the torch from the flame at his grave somehow offends people, my first thought is that is their problem, but it isn't necessarily crucial to the concept of a "flame walk" either. It just seems to make sense to me, since the torch has to be lit, and the flame is there.

We complain all the time about not having traditions that we can call our own and aren't copied from other schools. I think this is something that could be just that. The only other program named the Flames is Illinois Chicago, and for totally different reasons. I really hope at some point we can encorporate the idea of a flame into out athletic traditions, whether the exact form is what is suggested here or something different.

Well Seth Curry left and we need a replacement.

ENOUGH WITH ALL THE SETH CURRY STUFF SCH14!!! I am through with all your (expletive) throwing him under the bus...yes he left...that is a bummer...but do you have to bring it up so (expletive) much?!?

(deep breath) Sorry had to get that out of my system...

As for the topic at hand, I like the idea. The problem around here is that when someone wants to actually come up with something that seems like a halfway decent idea, people crop up and go "well...we dont want people to have to walk out of their way..." or "we don't want it to sound like we are worshipping Dr Falwell" or some other such thing...I say float it by the athletic office. they'd be the ones to make it happen.

Beej. Chill out. Everyone is entitled to say whatever they like even if it does offend you. It wasn't even bad.

I would say the OP of this thread has fairly close contact with the powers that be in our football program. Hopefully the idea will make it's way to someone there who can decide whether it is worth pursuing.

I don't think I've read anything about Seth in 8 months BJ. Chill out.

I know there were reasons, but why exactly could we not do the huge bonfire like Texas(?) does before the start of the season a few years back? Assuming it was Lynchburg being Lynchburg again.

Incorporating Flames would be cool, but unless we are going to hire fire-eaters (which requires booze in most cases), ex-stunt men to set themselves on fire in flame retardent suits and run around, or a phoneix...We could always have a pre-game burning of Korans at the 50 yard line...too soon?

HAHA I'm just messing around no reason to get fired up. I think the Seth Curry thing will finally die in maybe...10 more years haha.

Actually no I wouldnt because if it was over on AGS the powers that be would overrule it anyway since nothing in this discussion violates the ToS

i didnt view the whole lighting the torch at jerrys grave to be worshipping him at all. More so the fact that he was at every home game, and this would be a way to carry on that tradition. Along those same lines, we should put a bronze statue of LU's #1 fan in his seat at the vines, williams, and TRBC when he dies, complete with a button that when you press, will him say "WOOOOOOOO"

I like the idea.

JF's grave is the only 24 hour flame on campus......save wherever sodexho cooks their rats. Maybe in the future there can be a lit flame near the RoH and "the walk" starts from there.

More so than worshiping him - it's a reminder of how much our founder valued athletics. His vision for our athletics program - to be the Christian ND/BYU - should always be embraced.

Touchdown Jerry is a little much.

I think the team should run out to that every game. Record it, then blast it right at the end of our intro song(2001?)
