I don't think a messageboard's negative opinions have any impact on the football team.

Then you've obviously never been a part of a football team. They very much do have an impact and Anon (I'm guessing is one of our players) has every right to be touchy about what happened last season, particularly about the support or the lack thereof our team got from its fans.

This is something that I didn't have when I hooped at Liberty of course because the internet was not what it is today. I am not sure how I would have reacted to someone trashing my team or trashing me on a message board. I would like to think it wouldn't affect me but I think it would have at that age. I welcome constructive criticism and I am sure many will have some for me once basketball season starts on Flames Television. It used to be only pros and big time college athletes had to deal with this sort of thing and then it was only writers or people who called into sports talk shows. Now message boards are the big thing. I would probably have to stay away from the board or be prepared to take my punishment if thngs weren't going well. That being said, I think it is time to move forward and think positive about this seasons team and players. I for one am looking forward to this Liberty football season like I have never before in the past 20 years!

That can't possibly be obvious because I was on a football team from the time I was in 4th grade up through High School. The students at high school never really cared about us because we were only good 1 of the 4 years I played. I couldn't have cared less what they thought. But that's beside the point. THere's like 15 people here that type out their opinions and like 2 of them are negative. I really can't imagine that they effect player performance come saturdays.

Just think LUconn, using that guy's logic, we are only 3-4 positive posters away from having a successful season.

I'm not a player, but friends with a lot of them, and if there's one thing i noticed last season it was the lack of confidence and negative attitudes of a few players on the team that was contagious and that contributed heavily to the disaster last season. I'm not talking about a messageboard, i talking about the whole attitude around campus and on the team last year. But your right, if you look at these things you should be prepared to get some bad comments after a season like that.

Wasn't it the movie remember the titans that said "attitude reflects leadership" ? haha never more true. I think karcher was a wack job and once that ball got rolling it just got worse and worse. but its a new year, and its gonna be one to remember in my eyes. finally a good chance for ole LU to win the "big" south

Whoaaaa, there, Texas. I don't think anyone has called Karcher a whack job, before. The man had a true passion for Christ and for doing things the "right way." That certainly doesn't qualify for a "whack job." Now his coaching--THAT was whack!

I agree with AG on Karcher. He did have a passion for Christ but he was not a good coach. Hopefully this season will be good.

Congratulations on being immune to apathetic fans. Did you ever wonder if your team might have done better in the bad years if your fans had supported you? When Coastal puts as many butts in our stands as we do, you don't think that has an impact on the morale of our players? Particularly when you see postings on the message board like "our team weakness is football"?

I know this thread has been quiet for a while and most of the controversy has probalby cooled, but I just wanted to clear a couple of things up. First of all, I made the joke about LAST year's team. I wouldn't be on this board all the time if I didn't support LU athletics. I live a pretty good distance away from Lynchburg and I do my best to make it to as many sporting events as possible each year. I am sorry if people took my comment as a sign of negativity or apathy.

On the other hand, I have a hard time buying that I was personally responsible for last year's 1-10 season. It is very possible to win without anyone being there to support you. See, I was on a team at LU in the late 90's. One that received zero support from ANY fans. I can say that with confidence because we had no home "games" and no one came to watch us. Regardless of the lack of support, the team went on to win the Big South Cross Country Championship. (I take zero credit for the team's success!) There was no parade or big deal made by anybody. We received no rings and were presented the trophy in front of less than 1,000 fans at a non-conference basketball game on a Tuesday night later in the fall. I can honestly say, no one on the team cared about what other people thought of us. We were happy to achieve our personal goals and come away with a successful season.

I know football is different in that people are EXPECTED to attend the games and cheer on their team. But is it really different? It's about the members of the team and coaches doing the right things on the field that win the game.

Again, I am pulling for this year's team as much as everybody else out there. I hope we go on and have a great season, win the conference championship, and turn lots of heads in the process. (I will be there to see as many games as I can!) At the end of the season though, I don't want to be granted credit for the team's success. The team will deserve all the credit.

actually I didn't see that last response. But I think that you don't understand what I'm saying, Libertine. Maybe I'm not saying it clear. Fan support does have an impact on the team. Fans in the stands, the passion, whatever. But when you start to blame some of the teams deficiancies on some geek like me typing on the internet, I think you're reaching.

You are absolutely right--especially at a still relatively small (and somewhat close-knit) campus. The players last year had to be in tune with all the comments around campus from their classmates and it HAD to affect them. Having very few show up probably compounded it. Heck, it sounds like they're having more students showing up to watch practice this year than came to games last year.
