Unless we really promote it as most important game in school history, half the student body is going to leave on Thursday or Friday. They've shown this year they don't really care. Last night there was no reason not to come to the game and people didn't show up. Next weekend there's no school so unless they really find out the meaning of this game, they're not staying.

The only thing that impressed me about the student body last night was the fact that by the end of the first half the student section actually looked full. I'm glad they show up in the cold. however by the 3rd Q. they were leaving. and by the end of the game it was like an LCA JV game out there. Its sad that our guys at the end of the game come over and sing the fight song with the student section when the student section isn't really there.

It was pretty cold last night. The weird thing is there were more people on the Baptist side at the end of the game. I really can't wait for the Elon game. Go Flames!!! Oh and Sj, you looked pretty slick in a tie :)

I can look good when I dress up. I just don't do it very often. I didn't have time to change before the game so I came still dressed up. Didn't have red on and got some crap for it but considering the circumstances, I think I was ok.

Rumors are rumors but some of the students have an idea about the football team's extra curricular activities
Huh? 100 student-atheletes have some sort of rumored "extracurricular activities" that keep their fellow students from coming out to support them :?:

people hear rumors about them doing stuff against the LU way and it turns them off to the football team

And if they correlated that to everything on campus then they wouldn't support anyone on campus. Every single group has people who do things out of the Liberty Way.

What are these activities I haven't heard about? They don't involve party boats, do they? 8)

My bad. I thought he was talking to me since his previous post was directed towards me.

And it's the same stuff that players have been accused of for the past 20-30 years.

Not worth getting to involved in, Ill just leave it at this.

People going out to witness at LC always learn more about our "Christian Ways" - Not subject to only certain people, but when you're on a pedestal, you're on a pedestal, for better or worse.

You know, stuff like not making their beds, not taking out the trash, not going to prayer groups.

And by that, of course, I mean that they wear sweatpants to class.

the athletic teams in general have the reputation that they can get away with anything...I am not so sure that is the case anymore with the new coaching staff's that have come onto campus...but once a reputation is built its hard to break that...with that said that has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation...the students show up, but if its not a good game, they leave...is it annoying? maybe so...but we are still making progress...and SJ I know you and others within the football program put a ton of work and its hard to see people leave...but things like tradition and kids caring enough to stay til the end is not going to happen overnight...it will though, there is a great foundation being built right now...and if people continue to work hard, it will pay off

just my 2 cents...

It's not hard to see them leave, it's embarrassing. When I have a coach come up to me on the field right after the game and ask what was up with the students and why won't they come to games, that's embarrassing. The students simply don't care. Three years ago everyone said winning will change that. We've had the best season in school history and it hasn't changed it at all.

it has changed though...people didn't use to show up...I wish you could have seen some of the pathetic turnouts...

I am not saying its not embarrassing, and get what you are saying...I think its ridiculous...but 3 years is not a long time in the course of a program...a lot of winning I-AA schools have the same kind of problems, because its hard to get students to care about I-AA football...

I just don't get the mindset of going to the game and thinking, "Ok, I'll go, but first chance I get I'm leaving." If you're gonna go, stay the three hours. It's not that hard.

That may be a bit of an overstatement, but it should be noted that it is one of the best.

Winning did change whether they come. They now come. But here's why they dont stay(including stretches):
1) Playing a team not known among average students
2) Teams we play at home "We should kill"
3) Games are over at halftime
4) We play in a conference in which winning the conference has no meaning in terms of playoffs
5) Students hve never paid to get in. Not saying charging is a good idea, but I think the aspect of getting value may keep some from leaving so early.

The scheduling next year seems to be much better in terms of competition which will change most of the problem
A good showing at WVU can help out as well
The Autobid in 2010 will change the value of winning our conference

That is not an overstretch at all. We have tied for the most wins in school history. If we win next week, we set the school record for wins in a season and Division I wins in a season.

I agree. Students and Townies will come to the games and be more intrested in the games, when the games are interesting. No automatic bid. Teams that arent recognizable to the lay student, and no bigtime DI school on the schedule. I think that winning these last couple of years has put us in good position to start doing these things, and crowds will become more interested in more interesting football.

but it was and is a process. We are definately still going in that direction.

Tying the number of wins by scheduling cupcakes doesnt make it the best season.

We get 12 games to win 9, not 11 in the past
2DII games, 2 bottom feeder teams from good conferences, and our conference(bunch of tough games they are) leave us with 0 good wins. A win vs. Elon and making the playoffs would make this the best but we have to prove something before we start making those claims
Coaching changes

It appears your intel was on the mark.
