Well if that would be the case we'd win automatically (since its a bye week)

Im with SJ in saying the St Francis game will probably be homecoming

I think we should have taken that Appy State game. We used to play them every year and we need to start getting back to playing top teams. Next year we are going to have a D1A offensive line. Play them early and catch them by surprise.

Oops, I didn't even look at the new one. I thought the St. Francis game was still the 13th. They flipped the open day.

I wish we would have played Appy State at their place. Boone would have been a nice road trip. :(

No way do we play App on 10/13! The goal right now -- first and foremost -- is to win the conference and going down to the defending national champs the week before conference play starts does not help us do that. Secondly, App was good when we played them "every year" but they are far and away better now than they ever were then. I think we've seen in the last several years where playing the "top teams" prematurely has gotten us. Finally, 10/13 is not early. App will have played 2 conference games by then. If you can catch a team by surprise in mid-October than that team has a lousy coach. App does not have a lousy coach.

Addendum : Further, I don't see how playing App earlier would help us either. As good as we think we are going into '07, we won't know for sure until we line 'em up. If you go up against the best there is w/o knowing how good you are yourself, you're asking for failure.

If you wanna see drunken hillbillies, go to Rustburg.

If you wanna see potheads, go to LC.

Yea but at least with playing teams like App State you get a true measure of where we are at with this program. Putting the Shippensburgs, St Francis's, and Tusculum's of the world don't do us much good. Those games are not a true measure and would really hurt our chances if we could get into the playoffs. If we were to hang tough against App State and still loose that would do us more good than whipping up on the div 2's. At least I would get a much truer measure of where we are at.

First, don't take this personally, but I don't think JB and Rocco much care where you think the program is at this stage in the game.
Secondly, there's a lot of chatter on here about what kind of record we would need to get into the playoffs. I can guarantee you at least this: as things stand, nobody from the Big South is getting into the playoffs w/o winning the Big South. We go out there to win them all but the Big South Jostens is the goal.
Also, you're making a heck of an assumption here about "hanging tough with App State". Yes, App State is that good. They were the best team in the country last year and I've seen nothing to indicate a serious dropoff in '07. If anything, they've gotten better. Yes, we are vastly improved but they are not a team that you "test yourself" against. There's some programs out there that would fit what you're talking about but, unfortunately, for whatever reason we couldn't get them on the schedule. After seeing what happened against JMU in '03 and UConn/W&M/YSU in '05, I would think that a few more people would be a little more cautious about committing "season suicide". Fortunately, JB and Rocco aren't stupid enough to do that.

W & M and Toledo.

Maybe 10-1, if we knock-off one of those two.

With a huge upgrade at QB, maybe 11-0. Hey, a man can dream, can't he?

Do we have a new QB?

No, but if you think Brock Smith vs CSU was the same as Brock Smith early in the year you either didn't pay attention or don't know what you're talking about. He got so much better at the end of the year.

I feel completely safe with Brock Smith at QB in the fall...I don't mind a few plays here and there sitting out to change it up with terrel...but I say 95 percent of the reps should go to Brock, he improved so much last year

Brock Smith should be coming into his own next year. Early last season was a struggle but he improved as the year went on as he was more confortable with the new offensive set and Coach Rocco had more confidence in his ability to make plays. He is big (240), has a great arm, and surprising speed considering his size. He has been throught the tough times and now it is his turn to be the QB he is capable of.

Ill agree with that as well, after listening to both sides of that one....its pretty clear we can't get cocky just yet and think we can hang with App. Lets build some confidence first.
