Do we know why he failed to appear? I know that (again different circumstance), when the issuing officer in my case failed to appear twice, the judge issued a contempt charge from the bench on the officer. We dont know what happened in Asa's case that resulted in him not appearing and we should not speculate as to what that reason might be.

I was referring to on the date in question SCH14 (even if you were attempting to make light of the situation). If you dont appear on your appointed court date (this is true in traffic court, criminal court, civil court etc.) they arent just gonna sit around twiddling their thumbs waiting for you to show up.

That is true BJ. But He failed to appear twice. They contact you after the first time I'm sure.

Maybe I missed it but I have a few questions...

Was Asa ever kicked out of school? My understanding is that he wasn't, which would make sense as he's not convicted.

Is Asa officially back on the team?

Is Asa unofficially back on the team?

Actually gentlemen, the FTA's were not issued for failing to appear, but rather for other legal reasons that probably don't need to be discussed here. It is easy to explain, and a review of the Virginia Courts Case Information site sheds light on what is going on, but quite frankly, the young man does not need more publicity. Defense counsel has his work cut out for him!

They do bob...I have had a few occasions where I didnt appear and my parents got a letter in the mail (because they had my home address in Portsmouth on file) indicating the conviction (and I got a long talking to over the phone that night). As I said, we dont know what the circumstances were that led to his failing to appear on either occasion.

Well, I know it was actually for the reasons already listed jimbo. Beej, its not the courts responsibility to update your home address, it is yours. Like jimbo said, it is not from showing up to court, it had to do with driving with a suspended license, which is the second highest offense you can commit in Va behind a DWI.

I might need to make the trip down for that Dec 7 court date. If the story is anything as good as BJ thinks it might be, it will be worth it.

I think we're getting back into an area of deciding if he's "legally" guilty. Sure it's relevant but since when does LU decide on what happens to you based on what the courts say? Same with the football team. If he's innocent, he's made stupid decision #58 and this time he was a captain. Guilty or not guilty of whatever charge. He keeps finding his way into undesirable scenarios.

The legal system has nothing to do with what you know to be true. Only what you can prove to be true. Thus phrases like 'nobody talks and everybody walks' are words to live by.

So, going on JIMBOs line of reasoning:
If it wasn't his cocaine whose was it?
Same for the weed?
Why was he originally pulled over?
What were the 2 FTAs for? How many people do you know in your life that have not 1 but 2 of them?
Why does he seem to have a history of frequently being in the wrong place at the wrong time?
Is it possible to help him get his life on track without playing football for LU this year? Why or why not?
Perception is reality. If he is allowed to play this year does anyone doubt that it will be seen as being done by 'driving through' a giant loop hole? Thus giving credence to the rumor that Liberty was actually founded in a valley but now with everything swept under the rug it is a mountain.
If he does play and is found guilty will LU vacate the wins in games he played?
These and more questions will be answered 'As The World Turns'

The length of suspension is comparable to the suspension given to Rashad a few years ago. And without knowing if he's truly guilty of a felony, and since the Liberty Way does allow for only the "possibility" of being removed from school, I honestly feel this is a fair decision. I feel the kid made a dumb decision, but I'd really like to see how it pans out in the legal aspect. He's obviously done some work to get back onto the team on the LU side of things, as there's no way Football or the AD's office would allow this if there wasn't proof that either 1) The charges were without warrant AND 2) He will be avoiding such situations in the future.

I understand this will be a tough situation for everyone, and I have nothing to defend my point except that it just feels like the fair thing to do.

Liberty University Head Football Coach Danny Rocco has announced the immediate reinstatement of defensive lineman Asa Chapman to his football program. Rocco suspended Chapman on Aug. 30 for a violation of University policies.

"I suspended Asa Chapman on Aug. 30 for conduct detrimental to the team and unbecoming a Liberty student-athlete," commented Rocco. "The University and the Athletics Department immediately put a support system in place which offered Asa mentorship, education, community service, academic support and personal counseling, as well as, Asa seeking out his own legal counsel."

"Asa has exceeded all that has been asked of him from the University since the time of his suspension," added Rocco. "Asa has learned several valuable life lessons during this time period, ones that are going to make him a better person, student-athlete and teammate."

"The support system that we have had in place for Asa during the last several weeks is in keeping with our University's mission and purpose," continued Rocco. "Liberty has been in the business of ministering to its students for 40 years, and is now in a New Era of Christian Commitment. This support system will continue to envelope Asa in the days ahead, making sure we do all we can to help this young man make the best possible life choices."

"Liberty University has a longstanding policy regarding the treatment of students who ‘self-report,' requesting assistance," said Mark Hine, Liberty University Vice President of Student Affairs. "Student Affairs will extend the same grace to Asa as would be extended to any student in a similar circumstance."

"I am excited for Asa that he is going to be able to return his focus back to the football field, and help our program's ‘Quest' to capture a fifth-straight Big South title, to win in the postseason and become a program of national prominence," concluded Rocco.

Chapman started all 11 games in 2010, helping anchor Liberty's defense that ranked No. 24 in the country in scoring defense (20.18 points allowed per game). The nose guard earned fourth-team All-America honors last season, finishing the year with a career-best 41 tackles.

self-report?? he was arrested. so i guess if AA would have come forward and said he had a problem, he stays in school?? what a joke. so after he was arrested did he go to the school and request assistance?? though im happy his support system is working, he should not be on the team.

I'm not sure what's more ridiculous - Mark Hine claiming Asa reported himself or the FlameFans twitter claiming there's a heated discussion here. Lets have a heated discussion about it.

I heatedly think Mark Hine is an idiot!

Phone conversation between Asa Chapman and Daniel C_______ Rocco

A-"Hi coach, I need to talk to you about something really important."
D-"Sure. Do we need to have this chat at 3AM?"
A-"Well I want to report myself and I also need some assistance."
D-"About what?"
A-"Well I got arrested. For minor stuff, like driving without a license, making too much noise in my car, mmmhmm marijuana and cocaine possession"
D-"Oh good. I'm really glad you told me you got arrested. That goes a long way with Mark Hine."
A-"Phew. I thought maybe I'd be in big trouble as the cocaine possession is a felony and this is supposed to be a Christian school with like rules and stuff."
D-"No. You'll be fine because you reported your arrest to us. Oh and we really need you to play football and of course become a great person. I'm altruistic like that. But just wait till you see our line against JMU. We'll have you back in no time."
A-"Thanks coach!"
D-"So you said you needed assistance?"
A-"Yeah I need someone to bail me out."
D-"We have a support system for that!"

Here are my thoughts.
Can I get a definition of 'self report'?
We knew this kid was a risk when he came here, why wasn't the ileged support system in place BEFORE the coke arrest? Probably would have helped him make better 'life choices'.
What tasks do Asa actually complete and exceed? Not getting caught/ arrested again?
What 'valuable life lessons' were learned? Don't get caught Rollin dirty? Make sure your liscense is up to date? Don't schedule a dentist appointment the same time as you have a court appearance?
What is the difference between this ' New Era of Christian Commitment" and the Old Era of Christian Commitment?

This is not suprising but still disappointing.
