We had some fun with Shaver...will always remember the hurdle...but not much before him and not much since. My point is, as a former coach (HS & MS - so not big time), good coaches exploit the advantages the opponent gives them. CC had little to stop our moose TE. And getting the TE into the scheme successfully makes life a lot nicer for the RBs and the Xs and Zs since the LBs and DBs now have to key on all three levels...that's all. That's my wish list.

From the Richmond game don't fumble inside the 10

From the ODU game 1.have the O scored more 2. don't let them return a punt for a TD.

seems as though we have shown improvement.

About the play calling you mention most people watching the game don't criticize the guard not pulling fast enough just the fact that the coach should have called XYZ if the play didn't work.

still work to do.

Well said, sigmo. Best of luck to your son and his team next week at G-W.

If ur not gonna really use the TE to throw to then to me it's a wasted formation, all u have one is brought an extra guy in the box, if ur only using it as a formation they should just stay in spread and run the zone

We played conservative on offense when we got a large lead. I didn't wait for the game to end to say that. It was clear. I was complaining to my wife about it and she just laughed at me haha. We aren't good enough to get conservative down the stretch. Sure our defense played terribly down the stretch but that was not the only thing that went wrong. This hurt more then ODU because of the size of our lead. Inexcusable and I hope it's just a learning experience for all involved.

To the ones getting upset at those of us being critical I will turn your own arguement against you. Should we just sit here and say "gee golly we came so close. Good job boys! Nice try!"

No! That is ridiculous. And I would suspect our own players and coaches aren't thinking that way either.

By parading around how FBS ready we are it opens the program up to a different kind of criticism and we need to stop this culture that we must be positive even after terrible losses.

We scored 45 points! How do you even partially blame the OC? (even though yes the playcalling in the 4'th was suspect)

About people saying "the D sucks", yes I heard it. I'll never say it quite that way but, I think everyone was so frustrated that it seemed no one knew how to tackle.

52 actually (45 in regulation) but the problem is we are not as aggressive with the lead as we were before...I was about to ask earlier whether Wachenheim was available or not

There is a common thread here to the losing big games and putting on the front of a Big time "FBS ready" program while not living up to expectations. even after coaching changes. Right TBGBG? I'm a jaded fan. between LU, Braves, Falcons, Etc. I have found that expecting greatness will only lead to disappointment.

BuryYourDuke wrote:Wach is the Offensive Line Coach at UVA. I'm pretty sure you could call that "available" if it was for a coordinator role. I'm not endorsing that...but I'm not saying it is the worst idea I've ever heard either.

EDIT: I agree that the offense needs to be more aggressive at times, but I don't know how this one doesn't get pegged on the defense. Not ONE single stop in the second half. I can't remember a time I have ever seen that to be honest. There needed to be some sort of adjustment made somewhere.
I agree but that's where the problem lies. If the D is tired and not executing or calling the right formations, the pressure falls on the Offense to pick of the slack. From where I was watching, the Offense was playing like the D wasn't giving up points and that's where the problem was. The offense had a responsibility to play as if their backs were against the wall. coastal did, and they won.

Offense wins gms defense win "chips" if the D can't stop no one score more, not hard to figure out, but realistically everyone was just the last cpl weeks praising how well the D has/was playing. I'm giving a pass vs Richmond as coach second guessed hisself because he thought they kne our calls. Second half changed Richmond had 96 total second half yds. ODU, we played bend don't break In between the 20's. now yesterday the D finally had a lapse, n ppl wanna fire Gill the staff everyone. Very fickle bunch here, IMO. We all want the team to do well but fact is since they have never won, has it been mentioned maybe they are trying to earn how to win. You also have to be in the game to try n win it, ad they are doing hat, everyone talks bible talk, so remember "patience is a virtue"

As for the kids, remember we are not duke and the Cameron crazies, you want more loyal fans I believe that also will only come as the team learns how to win. Getting better competition is only the beginning. Just because a bigger name school shows up here they are still really only a name because none of our student fans for the most part couldn't identify with who they were playing against anyway.

BuryYourDuke wrote:Hate to play Debbie downer here, but App State has one of the top 3 atmospheres in FCS. Very educated fan base and a big time FBS atmosphere. Then there is that winning lots of national championships thing.

Are they a wreck this season? Sure. I don't want to start comparing our programs though. It doesn't come out well for us.
Don't read to much into my commit :D Just saying, they should be peaking this season. Extra scholarships, on their way to FBS next season. They're having a hard time winning against FCS opponents. Attendance is declining. ODU's ready, APP State time will tell.

The fake punt by Coastal was turning point of game in my opinion. Our punt return team should have been more alert. It was perfect situation for a fake punt. I noticed when CC punt team came onto field, there was going to be a fake. They had an extra bounce in their step. #17 was giving instructions to other players as they ran onto field.

Also we did not put enough pressure on Coastal QB.

As for the fans, biggest problem I see is the video board. It seems as if 80% of students come to game to get on the big screen. The video operator needs to show more replays, and less of students in my opinion. Now granted the operator is probably following instructions from adminsistration. There were several important plays in the game which were never shown on replay board.

When you score 52 points you should win.

I saw that as well and was screaming it from the upper deck, but alas, no one heard me. :x

This game has the potential to be a turning point in the program's history. This isn't a situation where the team seems happy that they hung close to a ranked opponent -- they are mad at themselves that they let it slip away. IF they can build on that, if they can make changes that will win us games in the 4th quarter, then this could be a program-changer. I'm hoping that's the case.

That can't be. I've read on this board that only "spectators" sit there.

Most LU fans are only spectators, not fans. Most people on this board are fans and not spectators. Noodle that one.

This is true. I found out when my group tried to stand up and make some noise on a critical 3rd down in the 4th quarter and we were met by multiple "Down in front!" yells.
