The difference ballah09 is that you are an alum of PSU. In this case I believe we are talking about an LU undergrad alum who is also a current LU law student, but just happens to like NC State. I don't remember anyone here having a problem with supporting another school if you actually went there.

Not this year. The game at Gardner Webb would be during Fall Break. (which sounds like a good excuse to go to that game!)

I'm not suggesting that I'd pull for Duke over LU if they ever met, but I am curious about responses to these questions:

If you and your family had spent thousands of dollars and hours supporting a team (Team A) for the first quarter of your life, whether your parents taught you to be loyal to that team or you decided on your own... but then you went to a different school (Team B), where again you and your family spend thousands of dollars and hours, and give loyalty to that school, would you expect it to be a no-brainer to pull against Team A if the teams meet? Upon attending/graduating from Team B, should all loyalties to Team A be broken, and given to Team B?

Once again, just curious. Go Flames. Go Duke.

^Ha.

Bryson - my view...grew up a UNC fan. Spent a lot of money/time at Kenan & the Smith Center. However, if LU played them in any sport, I'm pulling for LU over the Heels. That's the only time I don't pull for UNC.

Not to mention you have to pack heat or risk getting shot while tailgating there...definitely far and away the worst setting of any of the big 4 (NCSU, UNC, Duke, WF) for football.
you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. As a Duke fan I can clarify that Duke is by far the worst setting for football. NCSU has a great stadium and loud fans. They may overdo it some, but what great fans don't? We've had police involved in our student section from people getting over excited, and that was without alcohol (maybe) so I can see how WVU or NCSU gets overly excited with the booze.

Also, that area is not unsafe. I have been to football at NCSU, the state fair on a regular basis, etc and have never felt unsafe. I went in the stadium wearing a duke shirt and didn't even feel unsafe. A little taunting but no more than anywhere else.

Funny to see a Gwebb fan talking junk about football facilities...

Wasn't it only a few years ago when you didn't have enough $$$ to paint your own football field... Only half of it was painted... but N.C.State is a dump? Let me guess.. you think the Dean Dome is a dump for basketball

I remember that, i was there! wait, but why isn't the grass just green like normal grass? Not enough fan support to afford fertilizer?

(Normally I don't bust on someone like this but when you go off spewing stupidity I can't help but respond. The door is too big to not walk through it)

He didn't leave at the first opportunity, he left for DUKE. A freaking great team who won the NC that year and who has a coach who is a gold medal winner, national champion, olympic and world champion. If you seriously fault him for that then I have nothing left to say because we clearly don't see eye to eye.

look, if you go to LU, support your team. If you don't, support whatever school you want to. I bleed Gold and Blue from the day I was born but when Liberty and West Virginia played each other it wasn't that difficult of a decision (I was the only one in my family in red). It's okay to like Duke, UNC, or whatever you want. But when your school plays them, you root for your school.

I completely agree. I was born and raised in NC and I bleed Duke blue but at the same time I am a die hard fan of LU bc I go here and will be till the day I die. And if you think i should just stop being a duke fan bc i go to lu then your crazy. I mean come on Duke and LU are not even in the same conference so I dont get why its such a big deal
Go Flames Go Duke

There's probably not many schools out there full of people that would hate you bc of your association with Liberty more than Duke. Yes I still fault Seth Curry for going to Duke. It's like saying you'd leave your family if you had a chance to join a more famous and successful one. That's not honorable.

Family?

He wasn't born into LU, he CHOSE it.

College sports is a business, and we became his employer (he gave us athletic ability, we gave him education).

He found a better job, and took it.

If you announced you got an awesome promotion and were making 300k+ a year as compared to the 30k job you had before, would you want Seth to come on and bash you for making a choice that improved your situation and gave you more opportunities? Because he went to a basketball program (Duke) at least 10 times the magnitude of LU, and he's getting national recognition on a weekly basis, rather than a random snippet once in a while.

This isn't a "family" thing. You don't pick your family. You're born into your family and there is a bond there unlike anything else. Over time you can develop bonds that are as close as family, but Seth was not involved with LU long enough to be anywhere close to "family". Tolsma is "family" at LU. Seth Curry was not.

Seth had no allegiances to LU except a contract that, these days, isn't worth the paper it's printed on. If there was a story that came out saying "Despite Dell's Wishes, Son Seth to Transfer to Duke" then you're talking about a "lack of character" type of situation. That would ACTUALLY be going against family.

But Seth chose LU as much as LU chose Seth, and either party could terminate that relationship at any time. Seth chose to do so. He got a better gig. Good for him. It stinks from a basketball standpoint for LU, but it's hardly a sign of some character issue with Seth.

BuryYourDuke wrote:TTL I understand your thoughts on the issue. I know I'm in the minority on this, bc everyone I know in real life is like "oh you can't blame him". I can. And I do. I still believe in loyalty, and I still believe that if you accept a scholarship somewhere that it means you play there barring some extreme circumstances. I'm sure people will call BS but if I was Curry and Coach K came calling I would ask where he was a year ago and tell him that I believed in those that believed in me. I've done similar things in my life. Obviously not on a sportscenter level like Seth, but I'm not just talking without any sort of experience either.
Then are you upset with our coaches who choose to release players from scholarships due to performance (and not violations of team rules/school rules)? Isn't it the same thing? The contract isn't worth the paper it's printed on these days.

It's just the way college sports works these days. Coaches and players bolt from contracts all the time. And it's not like Seth grew up an LU fan. There's no pics of Seth in his LU jersey in the driveway with Steph. I don't see how he was so connected with us. And I stood in the front row and watched him do the things he did for our team. I still don't feel like he's any more connected to LU than the kid who transfers from the Honors Program (no offense, CJ) because he can get into an Ivy League school. I'd love to have Seth Curry now at LU, but I put myself in his shoes, and I'm a Blue Devil right now, too.

The "I believe in those who believe in me" quote holds a bit of truth here, and sure it was a slightly selfish move by Seth, but anyone who leaves one place to go to another leaves behind people who need them or could have used their services. If you're the best cook at an Applebees and a 5* restaurant wants you to be a cook there, the Applebees is going to miss you, and you're going to be taking the new job selfishly. But at the Applebees you got a chance to prove you can perform, and the 5* is taking the chance that you can continue to improve on your abilities.

Yes, stupid analogy. But I think there is some truth to it.
