So, with this great new structure and state of the art facility.... What are the chances of replay being incorporated with the press box and video board? Will we be able to be that high tec?

Quick, without looking it up, who can come up with the original name for what is now Williams Stadium.
That would be Willard May Stadium. Not sure why they took that name off

From the book Falwell, Inc. :

"Willard May would soon be hit with a six-count grand jury fraud indictment. Falwell concluded that the long overdue $1.5 million the former pastor had promised would never materialize."

This was around the time the first President Bush came and spoke at commencement in the new stadium. The name was soon dropped.

I guess that answers my question on why they dropped the name after 1 1/2 years. I didn't know that. That might have been one of the things that contributed to our financial problems and high debt that resulted from that and other events at that time. We had to "pick up the tab" but were unable to do so at that time.

At that time they were saying that the sand based balsam surface was "state of the art" but in the end it was an "accident waiting to happen". Remember all of the sand that came up on the surface after Hurricane Fran.

Wow, a Liberty historical event (and name) that happened before BJ's time at LU. Either that, or he had forgotten the original name.

They are already building brick columns and black iron fencing around the football PRACTICE FIELD (it looks just like what they just added to the soccer/track complex).

That brought back a memory- My company was contracted to clean that balsam field to remove some of the junk that came to the surface. Coach R thought that it would help- and it did- for a little while. We used two large truck-mounted carpet cleaning machines- and damaged one of them due to the amount of sand that was extracted. That was the only time I've cleaned a football field and I should have gotten some photos!

I don't specifically remember them cleaning the fields but I was there at the game and the field looked like a beach out there with all of the sand on the surface when they were playing Western Carolina (A game we lost 20-10). I never saw so many players falling down, fumbles, and dropped passes in a game at that stadium ever. That was after Hurricane Fran and that storm also flooded the Vines Center, ruined the floor which they replaced before the basketball season started (Tacky looking floor)

If I'm not mistaken, we cleaned it before the season. There was a lot of dirt that had darkened areas where water pooled during storms and Coach R didn't like it. The field was used after that and eventually had to be replaced. I'm sure that by the time Fran hit, the writing was on the wall; I wouldn't have cleaned it again after that first experience because of the difficulties it caused with equipment.

Continuing the conversation from the other Williams Stadium Thread.

I'm also worried that we overflow the student side, but don't quite fill the Baptist side as much. I guess it's logical to expand the Baptist side first so that they can update the pressbox.

I have one suggestion, don't know how much it will help...they should move the band from the student side to one of the end gray sections of the Baptist side. That would free up about 200 more seats for the students, and take up 200 seats of gray on the Baptist side.

That wouldn't be too bad of an idea, but I doubt they would do that. Also, unless things have changed since last season, students are allowed to sit on the 'baptist side'. It's all general admission, so that could really help out the noise factor coming from the side with all our gazers :D

I'd love for the band to be over there next year. Most schools with stadiums that size put their bands up a little higher and in a corner so that everyone can hear them better. SC State does this. App does this. A few others that I can't think of do this too. That'd be awesome.
