My first chance to weigh in and this is ridiculous! The athletic department should go to the admin to fight for Flames Nation and their fans. Never good to make it difficult for anyone or anything that helps your fan base and promote your athletic program. Many of the their loyal Liberty fans are on this site so why would they think it is a good idea to disrupt that? Over a couple negative posts or wanting to know who posted it? Be happy you have fans who care enough to post anything at all.

Sorry. I had to get that out there in case one of their cronies are watching keeping score on negative feedback.

Love some of the names mentioned. You guys have me laughing.

Going back to Firehouse isn't bad. Furnace, Inferno are good. Can "Flame" be used but not "Flames?" Something like FlameSource.com or SourceoftheFire.com.

Maybe "flamefans"

It doesn't have the "s" and I don't think they could have any sort of legal case against you. Threats are one thing but a case is another.

You misunderstand. A little operation like 'Flamesnation' and 'Flamefans' going to court against a behemoth in LU with their seemingly unlimited funds is no small task. I doubt JCM and BYD have the time, much less cash to mount a serious defense. Best thing they can do is comply, change the name, and reserve their own copyright.

But unfortunately that's what happens when the bully has more resources than they know what to do with. They can take on a horrible lawsuit without thinking twice about it. Jon/Duke can't take on that financial challenge.

So when do we get to see the copy of the letter LU sent you guys? I would love to read that work of art.

Just claim we're the most-loosely-affiliated fan site of Calgary.
I doubt LU owns the name "Flames". Put a disclaimer at the top, any lawsuit threat is hollow.

If they really don't like the name of the site being used, sell it to them. Entities buy domain names all the time to protect themselves.

They don't actually care about the URL or the name or any of that. All they really want is to know who is criticizing them. They're using the name issues to wield their power and try to force the hand of Jon/Duke.

Question for Duke/Jon. If they keep giving you guys a hard time even with the name change, you guys going to link up with the likes of 24/7, scout, rivals, etc?

I know it's not the ideal situation but the cronies can't really do anything if you go that route...like suing a recruiting services

This whole thread is exactly why the LU powers want you to change the site's name. Too much complaining about changing a generic name that has little to no brand value to the site's owners and operators (and I'll go as far as saying community at large). Someone mentioned the Calgary Flames. Their leading independent blog is called Matchsticks and Gasoline. This site may benefit from its own identity.

Two weeks after the change, after knowing the new name, seeing the new graphics package and engaging with a revamped website... you all will love it!

You operate under the assumption that LU is king of the Interwebs. In your tirade you give about every reason why they should not waste their time. But they do. This is more a reflection on them and their incessant need to micro manage and control than it is about the people on this board.

Fair enough... I've actually come to appreciate you folks, as you all help bring some joy to being an alum. But seriously, LU isn't doing anything other schools don't do or haven't done. This is textbook brand management.

Personally, I have several qualms about LU, including: 1) no one following up after I expressed interest in joining the Flames Club, 2) Applying for posted jobs that were already filled and were probably never open in the first place, 3) Sitting in the SMGT program office waiting to inquire about hiring interns and no one taking any interest in who this 30something was sitting there (it was Homecoming; there should've been cookies on the table with a signing saying "Welcome Alumni!"; I left without talking to anyone about interns), 4) Being advised to quit my full-time job in sports to take an internship in sports so I can fulfill my requirements for a sport management degree (my head is still spinning from that one), 5) you know what... I'll stop at 4.

Yeah, LU has been fun! The Furnace is fitting...

Yeah I know others have been needlessly litigious or overly zealous in attempting to assure there is no brand confusion. It doesn't make the current situation appropriate.

I think a lot of reaction to something like this is due to the fact that a lot of us have learned to assume the worst of intentions for things like this.

If you'll notice, a lot of the athletics department's tweets are including the term "Flames Nation" now. This seems like a really recent -- and really juvenile -- development.

If you really wanted to troll people, you could get ProtestantNotreDame.com. Of course, then Notre Dame might get all snippy.

If this were truly about brand management, most of us wouldn't have a problem with it. But we know it's not. It's an illegitimate, immature issue wrapped in the blanket of something legit.

Well it's been fun making fun of them and all but it really should be something goofy like The Fire Pit or something. Sparky's Nest. Sparky wasn't on the list. Will the tagline under the title be allowed to say liberty? If not, it's gonna be hard for people to find this place.

The sad thing is that is where everyone's mind goes based on the action of the leaders. Normally I'd say "assume positive intent" but history tells us to expect otherwise.

Ok. Enough whining Already! Let's pick a new name and get back to talking and supporting LU sports! We have a baseball coach to hire. Also, only a few weeks to raise our football expectations only to get them dashed! ;)

You sound like HRC after the Benghazi report. 'Time to turn the page...'
Please. This is a deep rooted problem and it will be bitched about

Kind of amusing that flamesfans.com is a fan site for Calgary. That is where I'm kind of lost why we just can't keep flame fans and drop the flame nation tag. What kind of press would we get if we held signs that said save flame fans.com?

This actually may be the last straw. By itself it isn't a big deal but it has been going on since I started attending Liberty 13 years ago and it continues today. In some ways it seems worse.
