This was proceeded by a few posts explaining why we suck, and how we will lose. My point is, we can beat coastal, we can win the Big South, we can make the playoffs for the first time in school history, Your opinions of the program needing fixed are based upon us losing Saturday, so wait till Saturday night, and you can explain to us all the ways we need to fix the program.

I get that you have a lot "invested", but chill for a minute. The goals are still obtainable.

Somewhere I read that Coastal is our biggest rival.

What kind of crack goes into that line of thinking?

The last time JMU played us at home, we had to bring in extra security. We've never done that for Coastal.

Besides some of the fans on each respective board and the athletic administrations who invented this "rivalry," no one truly cares about Coastal. As a student, you don't like them because you're told not to.

This "rivalry" with Coastal doesn't even come close to the rivalries we used to have with Radford and VMI.

I've been down to Coastal for several basketball and football games. A handful of people in the stands will care about the "rivalry" but for the most part, those fans see us as just another Big South team. For the most part, our fans view them the same way.

This is not a rivalry.

Yeah the Coastal 'rivalry' is definitely a athletic department manufactured one, and if only b/c they are in our conference. If/when we switch conferences, I think it'd be hard to still pretend it matters.

Haven't you seen the "Beat Coastal" T-shirts??? We even wear those for Quiz Bowl tournaments in Conway.

I miss the days when ole BJ could do that kind of work for us.

Coastal is a rivalry because we play them every year in every sport and are always competitive with them.
JMU is not a rival because we don't play them every year and rarely anymore in FB.
Maybe a better understanding of Rivalry would help.

Please, dear God, don't do that. Let Gill coach his team. If he closes practices, it's for a reason. There's nothing good that can come of us finding out if Woodrum is starting.

We're playing JMU next season...

I've been to most home JMU games and most home Coastal games. The atmosphere when we play JMU is completely different. We play JMU in basketball some seasons, baseball almost every season, and as I mentioned we're playing them again in football.

Coastal is down in South Carolina, surrounded by trailer parks. JMU is right up the road and our community is extremely familiar with them.

If tomorrow's game wasn't for a playoff bid, few would care. On the other hand, if we were 1-10 and playing at JMU tomorrow, we would still take a good crowd.

What I would love to see (obviously a Flames victory of course) this weekend:

A repeat of 2011, where we score on our first 7 possessions and open up a can of w**** a**, shocking everybody and win by 40.

Will it happen? most likely not...but I'd love to see it work out that way

Did we play JMU this season in FB? Do we play Coastal?
Did we play them last year? Did we play Coastal?
Did we play them 2 years ago? Did we play Coastal?
Do we play them 2 years from now? Do we play Coastal?

I'm not saying they WOULDN'T be a good school to start a rivalry with, I'm just saying as of now they are not

JMU is a bad comparison. Like Purple said, if we played them every year, it would become great rivalry. But we don't.

As far as football goes, I think it is helpful to compare Coastal with Stony Brook. When Stony Brook was in the Big South, the games were just as important as the Coastal games, if not bigger. Unfortunately for us, that "rivalry" stopped.

As long as Liberty and Coastal are together it will be a "rivalry" because they are the only two athletic departments consistently competing in the Big South (across the board, not just football). It is a relationship of convenience. When one or both leave, the "rivalry" will stop. Coastal is a big game because it is the only consistently scheduled, competitive game on our schedule (the same for them). Would we rather be "rivals" with CSU, PC, or GWU?

I also would like to see LU score of first 7 possessions, and run them off the field.

If we never play JMU again, it would not bother me, I don't care for the Dukies.

It doesn't matter if we play Coastal all the time and haven't played JMU in a while. A majority of our fans do not care about Coastal, besides getting a free t-shirt. A majority of Coastal fans don't care about Liberty. A majority of fans, aren't die-hard sports fans. But they're the fans who are responsible for 19k in attendance versus 14k in attendance.

Maryland basketball has nothing scheduled with Duke, and I doubt Duke schedules anything with them for a while, but Maryland fans still hate Duke.

We have absolutely no connection to Coastal, besides that we both reside in the same conference. If that's what constitutes a rivalry, I guess CSU and High Point are rivals too. The only major sport that we haven't played JMU, since 2011, is football. And most of that was due to Mickey Matthews, who no longer coaches there.

JMU is an hour and a half away. Coastal is 5 hours. Most of us went to high school, go to church or work with someone who went or goes to JMU.

JMU fans can't stand Liberty. We can't stand them. The only thing more embarrassing for us if we don't go FBS, is if JMU does. Coastal don't give a flying rat's crack who they're playing, as long as they get their Natty light for the pre-game.

There is a difference between 'hate' and 'rivalry'. Duke/Maryland is NOT a rivalry. Duke/UNC is a rivalry.
And once we or they leave the BSC we will have a new one. If it ever gets to the point we play JMU annually, it will be a HUGE rivalry. But until that time, miss just a game that attracts a lot of people.

Coastal definitely is not a rivalry, at least in the traditional sense, students seem to hate the entire Big South equally. The hate for Coastal appears stronger because they are usually the best team on the conference schedule. And distance does not really define a rivalry, look at 'Cuse and Georgetown that's 6 1/2 hours from Georgetown's campus to the Carrier Dome.

Maryland-Duke was a very one-sided rivalry since 2010 but when Gary and Lefty were roaming the sidelines of Cole Field House (Comcast Center too) that was consistently one of the best games of the season and considered a rivalry by both sides. Turgeon is a Big12 guy and doesn't have the same connection to the ACC that a Duke and Maryland alumni would.
