Defense played very well. They were gassed on that last drive. If we were FBS, losing this game would have ruined my week. But. We are in the Big South. We need only to win the Big South. We were beat by mistakes that can be learned from and corrected. This game will prepare us for our conference games.

Now, we need to go back to work and win the Big South!

I think Layer's seat is a lot warner than Gill's
I hope Layer's seat is scorching. Gill deserves the rest of this season to determine the warmth of his.

Um, pretty sure I'm not the only one on here that has in fact played football, don't have to tell me how hard it is to win a game. My problem is not the players, my problem was the play calling at the end of the game, it is a pattern with this staff.

I believe our defense is playing about as good as any that I have seen from LU. They generated 4 turnovers and stopped three 4th and short plays.

Even in the Richmond game...the defense kept getting the offense chance after chance until time ran out.

In this game our offense really just needed 1 td in the 4th quarter to put the game away...but it didn't happen.

The one apect of our playcalling that drives me nuts is this: it seems like if we throw an incomplete pass on 1st and 10, then our next play is going to be a running play. EVERY TIME.
I know the staff probably wants a more managable 3rd down, but it's so predictable. Just throw it on second and 10 sometimes.

I'm still a LU fan! I will still be cheering.

I'm still a LU fan no matter what.

Does NCAA football 14 or any of the NFL 2K games count?

I've calmed down a little after my drive home from Norfolk.

Honestly, after having seen ODU completely dismantle good defenses in the past, I was prepared for this one to be pretty lopsided. After a few minutes of the game, however, I really started to believe we had a legitimate shot in this one. The defensive plan was the best I have ever seen against Heineke. Bend, don't break, is the perfect scheme to work against him.
Not that I am a big fan of moral victories (I still feel like I got hit by ODU's complete failure of a mag-lev train after we lost), but guys, the team played their hearts out tonight. I can't tell you how many people stopped me on the way out and told me how impressed they were with our team and our fans. 3 goal line stands? 2 interceptions in the end zone? When was the last time we did that? We can point to about 5 things that could have changed that would have given us the win, but think of how many times ODU had the chance to put US away, but our guys wouldn't let it happen.
I'm still proud of my school and my team and I'm looking forward to heading up to homecoming in a couple of weeks.

Well, before the season, I predicted we would finish the year 9-3 and we have lost the 3 games that I thought we would lose. We should beat Coastal if we play like we did against ODU, Richmond and Kent St. Besides Coastal, there is no excuse to lose to anyone else on our schedule. It looks like our playoff hopes will boil down to beating them on the 19th and not having a WTF game the rest of the year. I would be happy with that, but it does not ease the pain of losing this game that we actually gave away. NO MORE MORAL VICTORIES OR SHARED BSC CHAMPIONSHIPS.

As I said before, I am missing my first home game in 11 years and I would love to be wrong about this game and to look at the gametracker after I finish the wedding Im DJing at and find that we crushed Coastal. Gardner-Webb lost to Charlotte today which tells me that they can be beaten as well. Charleston Southern had to gut out another game against a D2. PC and VMI are both dumpster fires and we get them at home...if we beat Coastal, all I can say is that the time to win the Big South outright is here...and now...and we will do that...the first step comes in two weeks in our house.

SuperJon wrote:If you're trying to pin this one on Wimbo you're a friggin moron. This was the best defensive game we've played in years. This one's totally on Gill. His unit (special teams) left six points on the board and gave up a touchdown. After Gill, it's on Stahm. How do we only score 17 points against ODU's defense? They played well, but 17? C'mon. It's time we get a real offense.
Even ODU fans call themselves OU because they have no D...we hold them to 21 points and we lose...A Stahm-mering offense against a pourous defense. I'd like to see TG take over the play calling the rest of the season. Lay it ALL on the line. Our guys deserve better!

Go Flames!!!

2 thoughts.

1. ODU has a great offense. Those who are saying that our defense didn't execute well, know very little about football. Football is not a stat game like baseball. A team can put up 500+ yards and still have a bad offensive performance. Football is a watching game. I watched our defense hold the best offense in the state of Virginia to 21 points, and I wouldn't blame them for 14 of those points. I was very, very impressed with the performance by our defense. There were only two things that were disheartening. One being the 2nd touchdown with the blown coverage. The other being the dropped interception. Despite that, our defense played exceptional tonight.

2. LU athletics is in trouble. I know what our baseball team and our basketball team have done in the past year. That's cool. However, across the board, we can't win big in-state games. We don't win games that matter. Wake, Richmond, NC State, ODU, JMU x4, Stony Brook, Coastal...etc. We were in each of those games, we had chances to win each of those games. Yet, we lost every single one.

Here's my point:

The problem isn't with the head coach, this goes back to Rocco. The problem is with our culture. We celebrate things that aren't really accomplishments. Such as, sharing the Big South title, playing "tough" games, and having winning records. We're missing a certain factor and it goes deeper than the coaches. I'm not blaming the athletic director, I think Jeff Barber is great. But there's something within the culture of our program that greatly limits our ability to win. I don't know what it is; but it's evident that it exists. Part of me is curious if FBS conferences notice that.

I couldn't agree with you more. Our D was hitting hard and Kenny Scott with the 2 INTs in the end zone were huge. Also stopping ODU on the 1 yard line on 4th down at their place was a big momentum swing after we fumbled. If we could have just 1 of the 3 dropped pick 6s we would all be celebrating now.

I actually thought we should have passed more at the end... we ran on first and 2nd down then passed on 3rd every time at the end.. woodrum had been so good, and the safe passes were getting much better yardage than any of our runs were.. all we needed was a first down, but we waited until 3rd down to really try to get it play calling wise, and used 1st and 2nd to run clock..

At the same time, while all that took place hurts, Gill did a great job, the way we were prepared for them was outstanding.. No way he should be in worse shape in our sight because of that game, he should be in better shape IMO.. Heineke turnovers are tough to force, and there were even more that we should have had.. offense and d were extremely prepared in a game that I was afraid we may not come in ready for all that ODU can throw at you

I'll start by saying I have never gotten involved with message boards and fan forums until now. As a player, I always tried to respect and appreciate the media and fan base, regardless of their opinions. Speaking strictly for myself as a player, I did everything in my power to excite and entertain our fans, and give them something to cheer about. It goes without saying that athletics is emotional, for both the athletes AND the fans. In regards to my tweet, I never sought to degrade or belittle any person or persons. The point I was trying to make (perhaps unsuccessfully), is that it is extremely competitive/tough to win games and it is frustrating (as a player and sports enthusiast) to hear fans degrade and doubt their own team. I apologize to whomever I may have offended with my comment. I wish you all a good rest of the season and hope we rattle off several wins in a row.
