2 thoughts.
1. ODU has a great offense. Those who are saying that our defense didn't execute well, know very little about football. Football is not a stat game like baseball. A team can put up 500+ yards and still have a bad offensive performance. Football is a watching game. I watched our defense hold the best offense in the state of Virginia to 21 points, and I wouldn't blame them for 14 of those points. I was very, very impressed with the performance by our defense. There were only two things that were disheartening. One being the 2nd touchdown with the blown coverage. The other being the dropped interception. Despite that, our defense played exceptional tonight.
2. LU athletics is in trouble. I know what our baseball team and our basketball team have done in the past year. That's cool. However, across the board, we can't win big in-state games. We don't win games that matter. Wake, Richmond, NC State, ODU, JMU x4, Stony Brook, Coastal...etc. We were in each of those games, we had chances to win each of those games. Yet, we lost every single one.
Here's my point:
The problem isn't with the head coach, this goes back to Rocco. The problem is with our culture. We celebrate things that aren't really accomplishments. Such as, sharing the Big South title, playing "tough" games, and having winning records. We're missing a certain factor and it goes deeper than the coaches. I'm not blaming the athletic director, I think Jeff Barber is great. But there's something within the culture of our program that greatly limits our ability to win. I don't know what it is; but it's evident that it exists. Part of me is curious if FBS conferences notice that.
