Sometimes I get hopeful because I think I'm not apologizing as much anymore for the arrogance and ignorance of my gender quite as often. But then some dude makes an asinine statement like this to reassure me.
Most of us on this website and reading this thread - even you, BYD, I would surmise - enjoy sports for even more than the entertainment value it provides. We enjoy sports for the life lessons they teach us. If any of us tried, we could probably think of a sports analogy for just about anything in life that occurs. In the great liberal arts tradition of American collegiate education, athletics is one of many avenues for learning and opportunity. What Title IX did was ensure that the broad spectrum of opportunity afforded an individual participating in sport was not limited to a select few. And it allplays a huge part in, as you say BYD, "bettering the university."
Whether you're a fan of men's track & field and women's soccer or not, Title IX has been and continues to be a monumental piece of legislation that has grossly enhanced the educational experience of hundreds of thousands of individuals not unlike yourself.
