1) Youngstown WAS ranked in most of the polls, and ranked ahead of us.

2) They are a traditional powerhouse which has dominated the series between the 2 schools, and absolutely demolished us the last time we played them.

3) They were coming off of an EXTREMELY impressive win over the #2 team in the FCS.

You are pretty much alone in saying "I think YSU was the under dog here", with them playing on their home field, where they dominate, in front of a near-record crowd.

This WAS a BIG win for our program. I admit some have stretched the point to suggest it was the BIGGEST win, but it was BIG.
don't forget, No one has beaten them at home since the 2004 season out of conference.

FCSFAN2323 is VERY familiar with the YSU program. I am trying to figure out who has Liberty ties that is logged onto a YSU computer.

That doesn't sound like a LU fan! In fact, the post doesn't even sound like an FCS fan, as few FCS fans considered YSU a dog to Liberty. In fact, some many LU fans thought that we wouldn't come out on top at Stambaugh (yes, I was one  ). Maybe this is a lurker from another school in the 'burg; seems like there was one around here last year.

He could be their mascot for all I care...
...he certainly isn't hurting anything...and like Rooster said in another thread...it's getting boring around here.

Fumble is a HUGE fan of Readers digest, and every once in a while he starts a new RD thread to tout it's greatness! 8)

Reader's Digest has absolutely nothing to do with the way anyone reads this game. It was a HUGE win for the University, and for the program. If we beat them every year, it would be a big win every year for all of the reasons listed in all the great posts going before on this thread. No one can deny that; something doesn't smell right about that post. No-one is that stupid.

I have a feeling it's someone from Winthrop who is both bored and embarrassed that they don't have enough Masculinity on campus to start a Football team. So they come on here to talk football with us because we have a team!

One produced a signature victory the Big South Conference has been seeking. The conference, needing to build its resume for any potential at-large playoff berths during the next few years, gratefully watched Liberty pull out a victory at Youngstown State. The Flames overcame a 14-point deficit, then surrendered a 14-point advantage, before winning as time expired

Liberty 31, Youngstown State 28
For much of their key contest at Youngstown State, the Flames relied on the feet of standout runningback Rashad Jennings. At the end, they counted on the right foot of a freshman kicker.

Matt Bevins, the Big South Freshman of the Week, booted a 24-yard field goal as time expired to provide the winning points in Liberty’s victory. The Flames’ euphoria after the triumph stood in contrast to rough moments for the team at the beginning and end of regulation.

The Penguins began the game appearing ready to send the upstart team from the Big South back to Virginia with a loss. They took the opening kickoff and drove 77 yards in 13 plays in 7:22 for a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Brandon Summers hit Dominique Barnes on a seven-yard touchdown pass for the score. Summers’ 18-yard run early in the second quarter gave the home team a 14-0 lead. At that point, Liberty had thrown an interception and punted on its two possessions.

Finally, the Flames got going behind Jennings (Big South Offensive Player of the Week), who rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns. His 17-yard run on third-and-two set up Zach Terrell’s three-yard run for Liberty’s first touchdown. Later in the second quarter, Jennings ripped off a 55-yard run and eventually scored from the two. The game was tied at 14 at halftime. Flames defensive back Chuck Duffy protected the tie by intercepting Summers at the Liberty five just before the end of the half.

In the third quarter, Terrell completed a 51-yard pass to wide receiver Dominic Bolden, keying a 95-yard scoring drive. Jennings finished the drive with a two-yard touchdown run. Youngstown could not move and punted. Bolden returned that punt 52 yards to the Penguin six. Jennings took it in from there to give the Flames a 28-14 lead.

Youngstown State used two Liberty turnovers to tie the game in the fourth. First, the Penguins recovered a fumble at midfield. Summers threw to Donald Jones for a four-yard touchdown pass. Then, looking to run out the clock and/or score again, the Flames turned the ball over when the Penguins intercepted Brock Smith. They drove 64 yards with Summers tossing his third touchdown pass to tie the score at 28.

The ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, setting Liberty up at its 40-yard line. The Flames worked the ball to the Youngstown State seven before Bevins’ winning kick.

Key Stats
Liberty linebacker Nick Hursky (Big South Defensive Player of the Week) was credited with 13 tackles and a sack. … While Summers threw for 334 yards, the Liberty defense did pick him once and sack him three times. … The teams combined for 881 total yards.

Quotes
Liberty head coach Danny Rocco: “What a great football game. Two good football teams. Biggest difference tonight was Rashad Jennings. Rashad just had his mind made up he was going to take this game under control. He did it, and we’re excited about the outcome.”

Rocco: “It’s a huge win. A statement. It validates our program. We came up here with one goal, and that was to win the football game.”
