That one game probably saved Karcher's job at that point in time.

I think that is an understatement. There were several Big South games that saved Coach Karcher's employment the last couple of years. I was listening online and I was going crazy. I can just imagine what it was like in person. We had crazy good offensive talent in the skill positions that season.

I distinctly remember being down on the field as the front ensemble percussion was taking care of the last of the stuff from halftime and I remember telling one of the other members of the band how cool it would be if we came back and won that game...and literally within minutes Eugene Goodman comes ripping into the endzone on the end we were at. After the second touchdown we were racing back to the stands so we could be in on the fight song. After the last touchdown I remember some of the folks talking about rushing the field with the students (a couple folks actually did) at the end of the game. They showed the video of that 4th quarter in convocation the next week.

I voted.

The VMI game obviously didn't hurt Karcher's chances but it was actually the 4-game winning streak to close the year that saved Karcher's job.

You are right, Lib...but that one game was the springboard. Obviously, you have a better read...but I cannot help but wonder what the mood of the team would have been the final three games had we lost to VMI...or what the mood of Dr. Falwell would have been after a homecoming loss.

It was a lot more the a couple of folks....about half the student side rushed the field...I was part of that....the funny thing is the ref had threw a flag that nobody had seen so the game wasn't quite over and this ref pushed me and said, "Get the hell off this field son" at the time I thought it was funny....I still do actually

I know a lot of folks rushed the field bro...I was talking about members of the marching band (Dr Kerr wasn't too happy about them doing it)

Oh man. Band members rushed the field? I can only imagine what was done to them the next week. (and I'm serious. That's a huge no-no).

Ironically enough, the euphoria of that game didn't last long for the team. VMI was followed by a heartbreaker down at Gardner-Webb and an absolute debacle at ETSU. As it turned out, Borek made the decision immediately after ETSU -- which dropped us to 2-6 on the year -- that Karcher would be released at the end of the season. Somebody in the meeting reportedly asked the question, "What happens if they win out?", to which Borek replied, "Well, really, what are the chances of that?"

Ah, momentum; she is a fickle mistress.

My all time favorite game. I literally bawled afterwards....I couldn't believe it! I have it on video and watch at least twice a year with my hubby. I still get excited as I watch it!
