NOTHING about our D was awful in my opinion - that was a heckuva an effort for 4 quarters.

Good defensive effort?

We gave up 373 yards, including 206 on the ground. They averaged almost 5 yards a rush.

I wouldn't call that "good."

College Football has changed significantly in regards to how we should judge defenses. First, from week 2 to week 3 our defense was so much better and was actually good compared to non-existent against ULL. Second, if we averaged 373 yards per game on defense that would put us at 45th in the country in total defense according to 2018 numbers. I would call that not average but somewhere between above-average and good. For Liberty over the last few years that is good. I agree that 373 seems way to much but we must look at the entire landscape of college football to see where we would stack up.

So far from the first 3 games last year to the first 3 games of this year we already have seen a 7 point improvement in points allowed per game and that improvement should grow after this week with Hampton coming to town. Last year we gave up 32(rounded up) points per game and this year we have given up 25 points per game in the first 3 games.

what were you smoking? we gave up over 200 yards rushing! teams will continue to exploit this and luckily Buffalo did not have closers like Louisiana did.

Go watch the game again Big Smooth and come back and tell me how “awful our run defense was”. They ran it 44 times - never took one to the house, we stuffed them on 3rd and short, 4th and short and we put them in passing situations often. Is our run D great? No - but it was light years ahead of 9 games we played last year and held up all game. Buffalo has some really good backs. You can glance at the stat sheet and say “they give up 5 yards a carry and say “awful” maybe...but I don’t think you can watch the game and study our run d and legitiimately say that. IF we didn’t tackle at first level, we did at the second level and rarely had to at the 3rd level. The week before you certainly could say awful - but we were down 3 key guys and got down 5 at one point and Offense was 3 and out nearly every series.

That's how I view it. With their 4.7 yard average, they had three different RBs with longs of only 23, 12, and 16 respectively (compare that to the gashing longs of 75, 68, 36 against UL).  Did we make adjustments to err on the side of stopping the gash (and pass game, as BU only completed 45%) at the risk of giving up more frequent 4-6 yard runs?  The more first downs they have to get to transverse the field the more likely it is that they’ll eventually run into 4th down, which was evidenced by our scoring defense holding them to 10 points until 6 minutes to go in the 4th.

BYU alumnus and fan here. A few thoughts:

1) Each game is a new game, and both teams game plan and try to win. While the "House that Jack built" chain (Team A did X against Team B, and Team C beat Team D badly, so this is what should happen . . .) can sometimes apply to common opponents and outcomes, it often doesn't. Each week is a new week for every team, and that's what gives teams and fans hope.

2) Virginia may be tougher than BYU. I wouldn't want to play them this year; their rebuild is progressing well.

3) Each week is touch and go in BYU's rebuild. Fingers crossed! :)

Epic House That Jack Built reference here. Post of the thread. I can do the whole book in one breath.

Buffalo is showing much better against Temple than they did against us. Temple gave up over 125 yards rushing in the first half.
Our victory over them is looking more impressive as the game goes along.
Barring a couple of quick turnovers, Buffalo is going to win this one.
