We move on in our series, and if I had to rank the positions by importance for 2016, Id probably rank this week second behind QB. This week we look at the WRs
As a side note before we get into the players, I just wanted to note Im including each player's class coming into the 2016 season and the number listed next to them is the number of years of eligibility they have remaining including the upcoming season:
Players Returning
Isaac Brown R-Junior (2) No 2015 Statistics
Zac Parker Senior (2) 49 Rec 464 Yards 1 TD 2015 Big South All-Conference Second Team
BJ Farrow R-Sophomore (3) 32 Rec 448 Yards 2 TDs
Dante Shells R-Senior (1) 22 Rec 414 Yards 2 TDs
Damian King Sophomore (4) 18 Rec 161 Yards
Kyle Carrington R-Freshman 3 Receptions 14 Yards
Marquis Fitzgerald Junior (3) No 2015 Statistics
Josh Newman R-Freshman (4) No 2015 Statistics
Cephas Reddick R-Sophomore (3) No 2015 Statistics
Josh Tully R-Freshman (4) No 2015 Statistics
Players Incoming
Jordan Williams 6-1 190 Lbs (Switched from Safety)
Spencer Jones 6-3 180 Lbs Nashville, TN (Franklin Road Academy)
Antonio Gandy-Golden 6-4 190 Lbs Dallas, GA (Paulding County HS)
Lionel McConnell 5-10 180 Lbs Allen, TX (Allen HS)
The Flames lose one of the most prolific receivers in Darrin "Petey" Peterson, but the cupboard is still stocked with talent, led by Farrow, who announced his presence as the future #1 target with his 40 yard game winning TD against Coastal Carolina on ESPN last year. He leads the way along with elder statesman Shells, who was a regular target for deep shots from Josh Woodrum in 2015.
For as much as he is maligned for his kick return issues, Parker is the only returning WR who made all-conference last year and his speed along with King will give the Flames a real explosive punch at the slot position.
Kyle Carrington and Jordan Williams, who switched over from the defensive side of the ball, both established themselves as major players, moving into the post-spring practice depth chart as the #2 receivers at their respective positions. Fitzgerald and Reddick are both players to keep an eye on as well.
Gandy-Golden reminds me a lot of the player that Peterson supplanted on a few of those receiving records he broke, Chris Summers. He's a big guy with vertical speed who can probably beat most DBs for a 50-50 ball. Jones, an invited walk-on for 2016, gives the Flames some versatility, primarily as a WR, but someone they can potentially line up and run some WR option pass plays with as well. McConnell, from the football crazy state of Texas, could be another excellent option at the slot or #2 receiver.
This has the potential to give defensive coordinators and defensive backs coaches fits in game planning, and could be a very fun group to follow in 2016 and beyond.
