Personally I will take the second FBS game, but we do have one other opening on the schedule from what I can tell so if we can get a quality FCS for that 6th home game, that will help things for our schedule

I know some of us here think at best LU will go 1-1 in the next two weeks, but stats are on our boys side. Turner Gill at LU is an impressive 12-1 in November and more importantly He is undefeated on the road in November while at the helm of LU. Lets go out and make the selections committee's job that much harder. GO Flames!!

If we could win out, there is also the additional MEAC slot available...

There is a good chance that the MEAC's second place team will make the playoffs. We need to trade that 2nd FBS game for a middle tier FCS team- and one that doesn't play in the Missouri Valley. Maybe someone from the Socon like Samford.

+1 It is very unwise the way we schedule two 1A schools each year.

You took the words out of my mouth BYD. Not to mention, one of their wins is a D2 (Lane is a D2 right?)

And an FBS loss is worse than an easy FCS win. In fact, the easy FCS win might be the difference in playoffs or no playoffs.

You mean the easy FCS win over schools like Gardner-Webb or Monmouth?

Gotcha.

No, I meant out of conference.

And I think you knew that already, because I was talking about what teams we schedule...not what teams we are required to play because of our conference affiliation. But if you want to act like a smart aleck, that's your choice.

We always have a bad loss in conference. Having some out of conference FCS wins...even if they are against MEAC/SWAC/NEC schools act as a buffer.

Personally I would disagree. I think having the second FBS game helps us more than having a lower tier FCS. Having a bunch of weak FCS games gives us almost zero margin for error come conference time. At least with the second FBS (which we have won the last two years mind you), that gives us a quality win for the resume (yes I know GSU is bad but at the end of the day they are FBS even if they look like a FCS in FBS clothing at times). Like Jon said in another discussion, if we go out and lose a game like we did to G-W and Monmouth, that is on the coach, not on the schedule.

But BJ, you can't bank on winning the FBS game. We've won I think 4 or 5 FBS games in our entire history. So we're something like 5 and 30 against FBS teams.

I think we have to schedule more realistically. Furthermore, I think we schedule FBS schools to try and impress FBS conferences...I don't think they really care all that much.

And SJ, sorry for calling you a smart aleck. I get all worked up over this scheduling of 2 FBS schools for some reason. It's like a pet peeve to me.

I will also say I would prefer playing 2 FBS schools than to scheduling multiple D2 schools. I like this schedule better than ones where we crush Concord and Glennville State in meaningless games.

This is where you're looking at our entire history and missing the strategy here.

In the last ten years, we've stopped playing money games for the sake of money games. Our FBS strategy has been to play local P5 schools (especially lower tiered ones) or winnable G5 games. We didn't beat Toledo or Kent State or ODU but they were very close games and got us respect. We did beat Ball State, App State, and Georgia State. We're 3-3 against G5 schools since 2008. That's about what you'd expect if we were to schedule the top 40 in FCS in its place.

If it happened before Barber got here, throw it out the window. It's not a valid frame of reference anymore.

This is true. But it still makes us better by playing better opponents.

Well, it should at least.
