They've always done that. I beleive it's primaryly due to them both being aired on ESPN. I don't think espn has much football that weekend to televise so they spread it out!?!?!?

I'd assume they are trying to get as much exposure as possible. Considering there are 8 games this weekend, it makes sense to try and spread them out a little.

There's always been a Friday quarterfinal game. As others have noted, it's for maximum television exposure.
