Almost every time he ran, it was at least a 10 yard gain. We could have used him more to open up more room for Abner. Once CSU saw that Masha was not real comfortable in the passing game, (very early) they focused on stopping our running game and forced us to beat them via the air. Masha threw some good balls, but mostly was very inconsistent. Thought he did play pretty well being his first start. Once the running game was taken away, the only thing that kept us in the game was #27's three interceptions. (If they had their names on the back of the jersey's I would know his name).

BTW, the all red look was our best so far this season by a VERY large margin. A chrome red helmet would look even better, but I like the matte red as well. Love the logo on the red helmet too.

27 is Jacob Hagen who will be a first team All-American this year and may win other national defensive player of the year awards.

I hope he does. That last interception in the end zone was sick.

Going back to the lateral screen game was not smart in my opinion be cuz he was or could have been more effective throwing downfield.
Give him plays he is absolutely comfortable with and go from there. He will learn from this for sure, but a lot more of yesterday's loss was defense inability to stop the option.
You are certainly welcome to your opinion, but not sure what football logic that is based on. One could seldom tell when we were going to use Masha as the primary runner, but we almost telegraphed every time we were going to rush DJ based on the formation. Very poor imagination/ play calling this game, maybe it was based on Masha being inexperienced. That combined with a bend don't break defense (that NEVER works on ANY team) did us in.

The formations that put DJ and Masha in the pistol with TE to short side usually tells me, or when running to the field we sort of run twins away speed option left with the TE trying to hook the last man. I have coached a lot of football so I can recognize some formations its not really that hard if you do KNOW what your looking at, and not looking at the game like its a reality show. But its just my opinion, I wish they would win trust me.

For the record, I said that it "seemed" that we were resting for Coastal. I know that the coaches and players all prepared to win. However, I did not agree with the bland play calling, and also question why an onside kick was not attempted near the end of the game when we clearly could not stop their running game. It "seemed" as if we were holding back (play calling/personnel).

This was posted by Cinciflame in the CSU game thread:
VAGolf and you think this game isn't important? What are the odds of beating Coastal at home? Not good. Winning this game would have gotten us to the playoffs no matter what happens next week. Another year of no playoffs for the Flames. I really hope Woodrum got hurt by a freak accident in practice and he wasn't running contact drills.
I haven't had a chance to respond until now.

Your first mistake is thinking that we would have been a lock for playoffs with a win over CSU, regardless of the Coastal result. That's foolish. Even had we beat CSU, if we were to lose to Coastal, we would be 8-4 with two losses to fellow bubble teams. That wouldn't be enough.

I hate that we lost to Charleston Southern but if we beat Coastal, we're in playoffs. No, the odds of beating them aren't great. Moglia is a great coach, they have talent and it's in Conway. But well coached teams always play their best football, the game after a loss. Coastal could be ranked 1 or 2 heading into that game, which will hopefully result in some arrogance. And we have absolutely nothing to lose on Saturday. Being in a position to leave everything on the field, against a team that has a secure playoff spot and hasn't lost yet, isn't a bad thing.

Yeah, losing a game that we should have won always sucks. But had we won that game, we would still need to beat Coastal to make playoffs. Let's go pull of an upset.

Agree to disagree on the what ifs, VAgolf. It is not relevant at this juncture.

The odds are certainly stacked against us beating the Chants this weekend. But it is far from unachievable.

Too bad football games consist of two halves. If not for some timely interceptions on our side of the field, the fact that they didn't need to score on their last drive, and a missed field goal, they could have put up 60, as Lang stated. Woodrum's absence did keep the defense on the field somewhat longer, but we have the depth and talent to play much better on defense. If we held them to more than one three and out, they would not have been on the field as long. No excuses.

Most over rated and in accurate phrase ever. Although an injury is a reason not an excuse

Again, being on the field too long because the Offense is stagnate because the QB is out is a solid reason. Not saying they played great just referencing the No Excuses crap to the team as a whole

I was just referring to the defense. Time of possession was almost equal in the first half. The offense clearly had a reason for their less than optimal performance.
