And practiced said speeches in the stalls in the education hall men's room for the world to hear while trying to peacefully take a leak. That's my favorite part of the story.

Getting back to the original topic, this has been a very stable position for us, save the brief experiment with Woodrum and Hudson splitting series the first couple games of 2012. Yeah it would have been nice to have a little competition pushing Josh, but I like not having any question as to who "the man" would be game 1. If we had picked up Vad Lee (who of course ended up at JMU), I don't think it would have been that clear cut.

We have a very good mixture right now at QB of veterans, backups, and freshmen. This makes for healthy competition, but there is one slight concern. We are investing a lot of scholarships in QBs, who will only play after a couple of years and may never see much playing time.

False

To clarify the above post, we only have 3 QBs on scholarship. That's not a lot. Besides the possibility of injury, you never really know when you recruit a QB if he is going to make the adjustment to college football and get the job done, so you really need to put at least an average of one new one into the pipeline every year.

We currently have 3 full, two of which are a freshman and redshirt freshman. Likely, Shashaty will get a half for his senior year simply out of loyalty. One of the freshmen will not be playing much (most likely one full season, but maybe not). That is a lot to invest for little return. If they were staggered more, I could understand, but they are not. The point stands: we are investing a lot of scholarships in QBs.

Coaches who add QBs each season do it with walkons and they have high turnover rates, not necessarily scholarship players.

If it is done properly. In 2011, we had 4 on scholarship: Mike Brown, Tyler Brennan, Gabe Henderson, and Woodrum. One transferred out and one switched position from QB.

In almost every instance, the max to use is 3 and they should be staggered to keep the competition healthy and not destructive. I would guess that the national FCS average for scholarship quarterbacks is between 2.5 and 3 annually.

I think we will see somewhat how things will work out for 2015 and 2016 with the backup QB battle. If Masha beats Shashaty (as some speculate, including myself, could happen), the question will be if he decides to transfer, or stays at Liberty and/or gives up football. If he is not on the roster, that leaves us (after Woodrum completes his eligibility) with Swanson, Masha and Bradwell. Now I don't know much about Swanson since he transferred after finishing his last season of HS football, but my guess is at his size, he isn't exactly Logan Thomas, and we work best with mobile QBs, which Masha and Bradwell both are.

I don't think that this season will settle anything. The moves will begin to happen in spring ball 2015. We will still have Woodrum in 2015, so there is cushion for someone who fall behind during this fall season to make it up in the spring and possibly next fall (depending on the roster at that point). The 2015 season backup battle will play a key role in setting the future course.

With Shashaty being given a schollie, we now have JR, SO, RFR and FR QBs on the roster. With all 4 back, we could POSSIBLY skip a year in our next class, but I'm really not sure it's a great idea, and certainly not if there is a player out there our coaches think could be an upgrade over what we have.

If you want to look at a position where you could argue we have overrecruited, look at the OL. 15 on scholarship. That's 3 deep at every position on the line, when almost all of these guys can play at least 2 positions and sometimes all 5. We have 2 walkons as well.

If Swanson is gone after this year as we expect (or moved to another position like Coach DeArmon was), that is a fair point. O-line is our most populous spot on the roster. I'd have to check the highlight tapes to see who would best fit on the other side

Yes, we have slightly over-recruited OL as well.

However, there is a better chance of getting playing time as a OL than a QB. Injuries can quickly decimate an OL and cripple an entire offense (together, they are the most critical part to building an offense). Depth gives you sustainability and unit cohesion for years to come. OL often can switch to DL at minimum if they cannot cut it on offense/special teams. Every FCS powerhouse is operates behind a powerful OL.

Most QBs at the FCS level cannot play WR/TE/RB/S or another position and earn meaningful playing time. Gabe Henderson is the exception and it took years before he could play WR at a high level.
