The hardcore UR alumni who provide the funding for football remember when the Spiders were I-A, believe it or not. As a result, the idea of dropping down to D3 is not likely on the table. Now non-scholarship admission to the Patriot League certainly is a possibility if their CAA Football counterparts from JMU & ODU bail for greener FBS pastures..

I hate seeing Rojas leave but I understand his loyalty to coach Rocco. He was easily my favorite defensive player as a Flame.

TD, I liked Manny, too, and he was a former student of mine, but essentially we "traded" him for Vantz Singletary, a former NFL and FBS linebackers coach. With all due respect, LU definitely got the better end of the deal on this one. :nod :clapping

If manny did not go with ROCCO. Would Gill have hired him, probably not.

You can certainly speculate that Manny would have been a longshot, but Im sure that he wouldnt have been merely dismissed out of hand. I think he has a chance to be a very good coach. He is young, fiery and Im sure knows his stuff because of his experience as a former player.

I was simply saying that if he had decided to stay, he would have had a chance to interview with Coach Gill. As I said at the beginning of my post (which apparently you missed jc), he certainly would have been a longshot to be on the staff (and remember at the press conference he simply said he would have some of his coaches, he didnt say which ones), but Im sure if he had, even if he wasnt hired he would have had a chance to meet with him.

was told it was a very hard choice. didn't won't to turn down a job over a chance to possibly be unemployed. probably not given a chose of hey, if the new coach doesn't want you i will take you. pretty much either you're in or you're out type of deal.

Probably so and that is completely understandable. Can't really have any kind of hard feelings about that

This N&A article is a week old, but I don't recall seeing it posted anywhere:
Rocco's UR staff includes some holdovers, some aides from LU
By: John O'Connor | Lynchburg News and Advance
Published: December 22, 2011
The staff of new University of Richmond football coach Danny Rocco is a mix of holdovers from the Spiders' group of coaches, and those who come from Liberty University with Rocco, who led the Flames the past six seasons.

UR announced Wednesday that staying at Richmond will be Wayne Lineburg (associate head coach/recruiting coordinator/running backs coach), who was the interim head coach this season, Bob Trott (defensive coordinator/safeties), Byron Thweatt (linebackers), Dave Legg (special teams/cornerbacks), and Bill Polin (tight ends).

Coming to Richmond from Liberty are former Clemson quarterback Brandon Streeter (offensive coordinator/QBs), Blaine McCorkle (offensive line), Levern Belin (defensive line), and Manny Rojas (linebackers).

"I have a criteria that I have used in terms of hiring (this) staff, and two of things that are kind of on the front end are, some connection or relationship to me. Guys I have either worked with in the past, guys you have some element of history with," Rocco said. "And then, guys who have a relationship with the university.

John's actually the UR beat writer for the Times-Dispatch. Not sure why it showed up with a N&A byline.

Here's an article that was carried by the Lynchburg paper:
From field office, UR's Rocco sees bright future

The University of Richmond football program these days does business out of a field office. The coaches work out of the Robins Stadium press box, looking down on the new FieldTurf playing surface
