Completely disagree, I think a football-only membership somewhere is a lot more likely then a full conference swap, right now. Ala Umass...

JLFjr was only going to announce a beefed up schedule...now they see how this curious little announcement is getting more attention than he thought it would....so now he's now scrambling for a FBS conference....we'll have one by noon, stay tuned

In all seriousness I think Liberty just figured out how to keep the interest for the presser's for news that's already out there

If this were something small or just a future opponent, wouldn't JB be making the announcement? I think Jerry Jr. making this announcement means that it's more than that.

below are quotes from DR in a article in a Roanoke Times article today.

As for a potential UVa-Liberty matchup, "sheer numbers, all of a sudden, are pushing that to 2016 [or] 2017," Rocco said.

"I think in the not-too-distant future, [the Flames] will make an announcement about making a move to FBS. How long it takes to get that done is out of my hands."

What was Carr here to do?

Former Florida athletics director Bill Carr is now in charge of Carr Sports Associates, a search and management firm that specializes in executive search, management consulting and corporate representation.

So what does Carr have to do with Liberty athletics?

One of his firm’s strengths is headhunting. When schools look to identify candidates for open athleticsdirector positions, they’ll often turn to Carr’s firm. The firm’s other strength: Giving honest evaluations of athletics’ departments strengths and weaknesses, so when conference go mining for new members, they have detailed information at hand.

Recently, Liberty AD Jeff Barber brought in Carr Sports Associates for an initial consult on the state of the Flames’ athletics program. Last week, Carr was in town to interview senior members of Liberty’s athleticsstaff. After he gathers information and gives Barber an initial report on the program, he’ll return for more interviews a few months down the road.

“I want to be the best there is,” Barber said. “I want to go the College World Series and win it. I don’t just want to be a good baseball team. So we asked Bill to come in and just take a really hard look at our program. I asked Jerry (Liberty chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr.) if we could do this, because I want to know where I’m screwing up. I want to know where I’m weak. I want to know what we need to do to make this a better athletic program.

“Bill’s one of the best in the country, if not the best. He’s going to come in and tell us where our warts are. He’s going to help us get better.”

Carr’s Liberty consultation isn’t being done with a specific goal in mind -- i.e., a quick move from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision once the NCAA moratorium on moving between subdivisions ends in August 2011.

With conference affiliations in a state of flux right now, though, Liberty wants to be in the best position possible when the next shift happens.

“For us to get better -- and we’re not good enough at anything yet -- we need an outside set of eyes to say, you know what, we need to do X, Y and Z,” Barber said. “That’s what he’s going to do.”

Some things just need to be gift wrapped and explained in kiddy words around here.

Chris Lang says, "Think App State."

Hmm, I wonder what Think App State could mean? Let's see what's on their website.

Oh, the first headline is "Feasibility Committee Releases Final Report." I wonder what that says.
The 10-member feasibility committee convened on Jan. 18 and after seven months of objective analysis, recommended on Aug. 22 that Appalachian seek membership in an athletics conference that sponsors football in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The ASU Board of Trustees approved the recommendation on Sept. 23.
Well that's cool. Good for them. I think our announcement is that we're playing VT or Michigan. It has to be.

A feasibility study could be done in-house, following up on the Carr information and perhaps with a committee of business-minded people with connections to or interest in LU.

Or go ahead and skip right to it and announce intentions to go FBS, and begin the waiting game in earnest for an opening and invite.

Not a conference move. Not yet.

Not the announcement of a game with VT.

Think App State. Not a game with App State, but ...
Since its about the direction of the program Im guessing its not a game with Michigan either. Id venture its related to the stadium or the eventual move up (though that isnt immediate as we all can ascertain)

Guys, we will be capitalizing on the attention of the hire to lay out our greater FBS intentions. Nothing will be earth-shattering to us but might to much of America who doesn't have the info we possess.

I'm pretty sure everyone is wrong and they are upgrading the laser faucets to be more responsive in Williams. Barber finally read jbock's letters.

Well, since we are thinking of App State...App state played Michigan. Currently Michigan's stadium has the capacity of 109,901. The announcement obviously is we are breaking ground on an even larger stadium therefore forcing Michigan to step down to the MAC conference making room for us in the Big 10 conference.

Come on guys isn't that obvious!!!????

I'm okay with replacing the nickname with Eagles or something else. Flames always brings out snickers from outsiders.
