The school is doing everything it can to stay true to its roots but yet be able to bring in young people (athletically and otherwise) from every stripe (Baptist, Methodist, Episcopalian, Pentecostal, etc). If people are hung up on the Southern Baptist thing, it may be more based on their own preconceived notions and not any marketing by the school.

Ah but BJ, forget not that perception is reality. Liberty is certainly trying to change the preconceived notion that we're a Southern Baptist school, and I applaud the university for it, however there are still parents of potential students out there that remember Liberty as a Baptist school. It may take several more years to fully shed the Baptist name/notion, and when we do we'll recruit better because of it.

Alright let's go down your rabbit hole.
By the same token as your argument there would be parents out there that want to send their kids here but when they find out that we a re trying to downplay our Baptist background will send their kids to a smaller school that they feel comfy with. They would wonder why LU is changing. Is it becoming more liberal? Are they starting to slacken their standards?
There are potential students out there whose parents remember LU as a baptist school and WANT to send their kids here.
IMO I think LU is trying to change the preconceived notion of what a Southern Baptist is, rather then shed the image.

I was just about to write something similar. SBC is not the kiss of death considering it is the 2nd largest denomination/fellowship in America. Baylor proudly claims they are Baptist to accept SBC funds and reaps the benefit of by having thousands of families send their kids to the Baptist school. Liberty has a big presence at all major SBC events and I hope they continue to do so. But at the same time, we are doing a great job convincing Assembly folks that there are great options beyond ORU, Evangel & Southwestern. And it is fun seeing Episcopal, Methodist & other denominational leaders sending their kids to our school. That's because we have made a point of clearly stating our Biblical position at a time when other Christian schools of all denominations have chosen to distance themselves from their religious heritage.

Not really. I think you articulated your point well (and I still think logic has jumped the shark)

I'm seeing two things here -

1. Some of you are associating losing the Baptist affiliation/label with losing "roots" and/or the moral code of the school. That was simply not what I was implying by my comments - our moral/character code goes far beyond denominations, as it should.

2. I believe that we are thinking differently about the kind of students we are trying to recruit. If someone wants to go to a small Southern Baptist college there are choices for them. I was always under the impression that we were trying to recruit the Christian kids who go to South Carolina, UVA, Tech, UNC, Duke, etc., as there are MANY of them. If those are the kids we want, non-denominational is what we need.

Let us face it.....the small Baptist types probably don't care about, nor want to support, big-time college football and could care less about 4QF and FBS and bowl games and what have you. The Christian kids that go to South Carolina though........that FBS/SEC atmosphere is what gets them there. Those are the kids I thought we were going after...the ones who write big-time checks to the Gamecock Club when they graduate and fill 80K seats while in school, paying 70 dollars a year for student section season tickets.

Don't you think if there were going to be changes made to the coaching staff we would have heard by now? In regards to assistants resigning/leaving.

Maybe they haven't been back to their offices yet to see the memo lying on their chairs?

BUMP

After watching Sam Houston run the option all over Stony Brook, I'm wondering how successful LU could have been with an option offense this year--with Brown, Allen, SirChauncey, Hayes, and Rice.

Really? you just thought of that? I agree 100% on that. Look at GT. they always have a stud receiver to help if they need it. We had Summers. Too bad we missed that boat! IMO that really would have showcased MB more.

Dre Barnes Eugene Goodman and Sam Gado would have been AWESOME in that type of offense. Tell me I'm wrong.

And I actually think that may have worked with the guys we had then. I always liked Goodman better than Barnes or Gado.

I just remember you bragging about how they were running the option in practice. And then we sucked like always haha. That's was still the era of good feelings towards Karcher. He was new and "innovative".
Blame autocorrect!
I have no memory of doing that. If only test scores reflected that memory of yours..........

In all the venom after the loss to Stony Brook, nobody commented on the fact that we led the conference in all-conference selections again

That kinda makes it worse. Thanks for rubbing it in.
