Hey Beej, quick question. Do those in the band consider themselves athletes?
Oh dear. Band does not = athlete. Playing an instrument and walking around is not athletic. Does it take talent? Absolutely. But there two different kinds of talent. Most football players probably can't do what most band members do, and most (probably all) band members can't do what football players do especially at the collegiate level.
BJ what you do in band, is not athletic. What everyone else in band does, IS athletic. No, I do not consider myself an athlete for being in band. But you cannot not deny that the physical work and dedication that is put into practice and doing a show is not athletic by nature.
In high school band camp, we would get up every morning at 5 a.m. and run about a mile to the football stadium from the dorm, once we got to the stadium, we would run a mile around the track, then do physical exercise for the next 2 hours. Without exaggeration, we would do 200 jumping jacks, 100 push ups, 100 sit ups, 100 "lay on your back and reach up and touch your toes things", the whole "six-inches routine", and many many other exercises. And if people showed up late, we would start all over again. Even when we finished and someone tried to skip the whole morning exercise all together, we would start from the beginning. So, double all of those numbers, and that would all be done before eating breakfast.
Granted, this was a "high-stepping, traditionally black, show band" much like NCCU's band last year. That's how we did things. That's the way black bands are. Its very military like and its VERY VERY physical.
Bottom line:
Marching band members are not athletes, but what they do is very athletic. And no one can deny that.
p.s. sorry for my little rant lol. I was just very fired up that BJ suggested that marching band only required skill and not athleticism.
